[0:33] Good morning. I'm Charles Osgood and

[0:35] this is Sunday morning.

[0:38] The House divided against itself cannot

[0:40] stand, said Abraham Lincoln, our first

[0:42] Republican president. The divisions of

[0:45] his day over slavery and states rights

[0:47] produced a terrible fratcidal war that

[0:49] tore this country apart.

[0:52] The political impass in Washington at

[0:53] the moment is minor compared to that.

[0:56] But other issues do divide America now

[0:58] and divide Lincoln's party, too. Our

[1:01] cover story this morning takes us to

[1:02] Pennsylvania, where Russ Mitchell will

[1:05] measure the Republican tent to see how

[1:06] much division and how much room there is

[1:09] within it.

[1:11] >> The Buchanan brigades are enlisted.

[1:13] >> For 30 years, the Republican party has

[1:15] become more conservative. The question

[1:17] raised by Colon Pal is whether there's

[1:20] room for anybody else in the party's

[1:22] tent. Some Republicans say no. Coming up

[1:25] on Sunday morning, we'll tell you about

[1:27] political doings in Pennsylvania, where

[1:29] the three most powerful politicians are

[1:32] a conservative, a moderate, and a

[1:34] liberal, and they're all Republicans.

[1:38] As for the gulf that appeared between

[1:40] this country's political parties last

[1:42] week, we will talk later on this morning

[1:44] with Bob Schiffer in Washington to ask

[1:45] how soon the federal government may be

[1:47] back in business again. And with Richard

[1:49] Thrill, we will travel south to the

[1:50] Florida Keys and then south again from

[1:53] the surface of the sea to its depths in

[1:55] the company of a scientist who hopes

[1:57] somehow to save the Earth's troubled

[2:00] waters.
