[0:00] And now for a CBS News special report,
[0:02] let's go to Dan Rather in New York.
[0:05] And from CBS News world headquarters in
[0:07] New York, we take you directly live to
[0:10] Baghdad.
[0:17] The fiercest anti-aircraft fire of the
[0:19] day. Obviously, the Iraqis believe that
[0:21] an attack is underway.
[0:25] Attacks have been in the far distance
[0:28] for about the last 30 to 45 minutes.
[0:34] An official in Washington has said
[0:36] there's
[0:38] obviously
[0:41] a big hit.
[0:45] And another.
[0:54] We're seeing this today from multiple
[0:55] cameras
[0:59] in various places around Baghdad.
[1:02] And we also have some satellite
[1:04] photographs of the city in general,
[1:06] which we may show you later.
[1:17] By far the heaviest attacks on Baghdad
[1:19] yet.
[1:20] This is the third series of
[1:22] attacks. No question, this is the
[1:24] heaviest yet.
[1:42] There's a fireball right right there.
[2:09] The story of this hour, the biggest raid
[2:11] yet
[2:14] being rained on Baghdad.
[2:18] Escalation of the aerial campaign
[2:23] is obvious
[2:24] but it may not be as intense as
[2:26] originally planned.
[2:30] Because US officials are known to be in
[2:32] surrender talks with senior Iraqi
[2:34] authorities.
[2:38] And these
[2:39] deeds of carnage
[2:42] could be read as
[2:44] one way of trying to move those
[2:45] negotiations along.
[3:00] We're letting this play the sounds and
[3:02] sights because
[3:05] in many important ways the picture
[3:07] and the sound
[3:09] speak for themselves.
[3:33] US officials have been saying that
[3:37] America's commanding general, Tommy
[3:39] Franks
[3:40] would quote scale the intensity of the
[3:43] bombardment in accordance with progress
[3:45] in the surrender talks.
[3:48] Taking that literally, I would say that
[3:49] the surrender talks
[3:51] have not been going particularly
