[0:45] >> Good evening. It was just before
[0:47] midnight in Arkansas. American Airlines
[0:49] Flight 1420 was under the command of a
[0:51] very experienced pilot. The plane built
[0:53] by Macdonald Douglas has a very good
[0:55] safety record. But the weather was
[0:57] something else described as gusting
[0:59] winds and hail. The plane skidded off
[1:01] the runway, broke into pieces, and burst
[1:03] into flames. There were 145 people on
[1:07] board. At least nine of them are dead,
[1:10] including the pilot. 80 people were
[1:12] injured. Our first report is from ABC's
[1:14] Lisa Stark in Little Rock.
[1:18] >> The force of the crash was clearly
[1:20] evident in the daylight. The American
[1:22] Airlines MD-80 torn apart, shredded
[1:25] parts of the fuselage ripped off.
[1:27] Investigators are just beginning to
[1:29] piece together what happened as the
[1:30] plane was landing in bad weather last
[1:32] night. After touching down, the jet
[1:35] apparently skidded down the runway and
[1:37] off the end, moving about 1,000 ft down
[1:40] to the river's edge, where it struck a
[1:42] number of structures,
