[0:06] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather
[0:09] reporting tonight from Mogadishu,
[0:11] Somalia. Good evening.
[0:13] This is your quintessential hellhole.
[0:15] There's no government, no police, only
[0:18] anarchy and chaos, danger and death.
[0:21] We're at the airport, just arrived here
[0:23] a few minutes ago. There was a firefight
[0:25] at the end of the runway as our plane
[0:27] came in. Earlier reports, Pakistani
[0:29] troops engaged in a firefight with one
[0:31] of the kind of Mad Max vehicles with a
[0:34] machine gun strapped to its side that
[0:36] the bandits and thugs and gang leaders
[0:38] in this part of the world are
[0:39] specializing sending to test perimeter
[0:42] defenses. The Pakistanis main role has
[0:44] been to keep this airport open and under
[0:47] United Nations control.
[0:49] About 1,000 people die every 24 hours
[0:53] here from gunfire, disease, starvation.
[0:57] One person will die roughly every two
[1:00] two and a half minutes while this
[1:01] broadcast is on the air.
[1:03] This is the kind of situation the
[1:04] Marines followed by the US Army will be
[1:06] coming into.
[1:07] For the official version of what
[1:08] President Bush is planning, we go to our
[1:10] defense department correspondent David
[1:11] Martin.
[1:12] >> Dan, the official name for this rescue
[1:14] mission is Operation Restore Hope, but
[1:17] whatever the name, it amounts to US
[1:19] military intervention in Somalia.
[1:22] >> Our mission is very clear.
[1:24] Our mission is to create a set of
[1:27] circumstances
[1:29] that will allow the delivery of relief
[1:31] supplies, food and medicine to the
[1:33] starving people of Somalia.
[1:35] >> Cheney and Joint Chiefs Chairman Powell
[1:37] outlined an operation that will begin
[1:38] early next
