[1:15] >> George Bush's budget deficit will leave

[1:17] our children with debt for decades to

[1:19] come. The president's tax and economic

[1:21] plans have given us the largest budget

[1:24] deficit in American history. In just 3

[1:26] years, America has gone from a surplus

[1:29] to a $2.7 trillion deficit. And it's our

[1:33] children and grandchildren who will have

[2:38] CBS News coverage of this presidential

[2:40] debate continues. Here again is Dan

[2:44] Rather. Back now with CBS News coverage

[2:46] of the final presidential faceoff.

[2:48] Reminding you again uh that we're

[2:50] tabulating the returns from our quick

[2:52] poll tonight among uncommitted voters.

[2:54] We'll pass that along to you shortly.

[2:56] Joining us now from Portland, Oregon is

[2:58] the other half of the Carrie Edwards

[3:00] ticket, the Democratic vice presidential

[3:02] nominee, Senator John Edwards of North

[3:03] Carolina. Senator, thanks for being with

[3:05] us. Our latest CBS News poll, Senator,

[3:08] indicates that Senator John Kerry,

[3:10] having led among women voters for quite

[3:12] some time during the summer, is now in a

[3:15] tie with President Bush among women

[3:18] voters. Two questions. First, how did

[3:20] this happen? And two, is does John Kerry

[3:22] have any chance of winning if that

[3:24] situation holds?

[3:26] Well, I don't think it will hold, Dan,

[3:28] because what John did tonight very

[3:31] clearly is he showed a clear command of

[3:33] of what's happening in the real world.

[3:36] Uh the healthc care crisis, for example,

[3:38] that America faces, talked about issues

[3:40] that affect women every single day in

[3:42] their lives, keeping them safe, making

[3:44] sure we help them with child care,

[3:47] making sure we do something about the

[3:48] health care crisis. For example, John

[3:50] talked about allowing prescription drugs

[3:52] safely into this country from Canada,

[3:54] bringing down the cost of prescription

[3:56] drugs by allowing bulk purchases. I

[3:58] mean, these are the kind of things that

[4:00] President Bush has had four years to do

[4:02] something about, and he's only made it

[4:03] worse. And you also heard John, by the

[4:05] way, talk about pay equity. Both of us

[4:07] believe strongly that women should be

[4:09] the p paid the same way men are paid for

[4:11] doing the same kind of work. And I

[4:13] didn't hear any response from President

[4:14] Bush on any of those. When they talked

[4:16] about social security, Senator, uh it

[4:18] seemed to some, including myself,

[4:20] watching it there was some confusion

[4:22] about where each man stands. Now,

[4:24] Senator Kerry said that he doesn't want

[4:26] to change uh Social Security. President

[4:29] Bush came back with the argument, which

[4:30] basically, well, if you don't change it,

[4:32] you're going to break it. Can you give

[4:34] us any additional clarity on the

[4:36] differences between the two men and why

[4:38] those differences exist?

[4:40] Yeah, the fundamental difference is

[4:42] George Bush wants to privatize Social

[4:44] Security. John Kerry does not. And and

[4:48] and that it's an important issue because

[4:50] George Bush when he came into office

[4:52] promised to put $2 trillion of the

[4:54] surplus aside to help strengthen Social

[4:56] Security. He didn't do that. The

[4:59] privatized, which is what he's proposing

[5:01] to do, as John Kerry pointed out

[5:03] tonight, will also cost a couple of

[5:05] trillion dollars. Now, how in the world

[5:07] is he going to pay for that? Because

[5:08] what's happening now is the present

[5:11] people who are pay working paying into

[5:13] the system are paying today's benefits.

[5:15] So if it cost $2 trillion to make this

[5:17] transition, where in the world is that

[5:19] money supposed to come from? And so what

[5:21] John was saying, and he's dead right

[5:23] about this, is we need to go back to

[5:24] what we were doing in the '9s and have

[5:26] fiscal responsibility, build up a

[5:29] surplus, strengthen uh our our uh our

[5:32] federal budget. And by doing that, we

[5:34] strengthen social security. For example,

[5:36] one the tax cut for the top 1% that

[5:39] George Bush gave the American people

[5:41] would take care of social security

[5:43] through the year 2075. I mean, that's

[5:46] just a difference in priorities. Dan, we

[5:48] believe we got to have fiscal

[5:49] responsibility to strengthen social

[5:51] security. George Bush, the best I can

[5:53] tell, has no plan other than privatizing

[5:55] and has no way to pay for that.

[5:57] >> Senator John Edwards, the bottom half of

[6:00] the car, Edward Sickett, thanks for

[6:01] being with us. Now, coming up next, you

[6:03] will hear from a supporter of President

[6:04] Bush, former New York City Mayor Rudy

[6:07] Giuliani. So, stick in here with us.
