[0:22] On this edition of Beyond 2000, we'll
[0:24] find out why the lungs of the world, the
[0:27] Amazon rainforest, may soon stop
[0:29] breathing. It's the most important
[0:31] single environmental issue facing the
[0:33] world today. and its outcome could
[0:36] decide whether human life will exist on
[0:38] this planet in the years beyond 2000.
[0:41] We'll also see why castration is no
[0:44] longer an essential weapon in the war
[0:45] against cancer. And we'll meet the
[0:48] Hawaiian love child who could force a
[0:50] complete rethink of Darwin's theory of
[0:53] evolution.
[0:55] Hello and welcome to Beyond 2000. Just
[0:58] as we refer to the middle of the last
[1:00] century as the steam age, in a 100 years
[1:03] from now, people will describe our time
[1:05] as the computer age or maybe even the
[1:07] nuclear age. And just as we now have
[1:09] people who tinker with steam engines as
[1:11] a hobby, the eccentrics of the future
[1:14] may tinker with their own nuclear
[1:15] reactor or personal computer. But it's
[1:18] unlikely those eccentrics will be able
[1:20] to match the lunacy of our common or
[1:22] garden variety steam enthusiast. As Jeff
[1:25] Watson explains,
[1:41] it's many years since steam trains ran
[1:43] along the suburban railway line at the
[1:45] end of John Osborne's garden. But while
[1:48] British Rail long ago abandoned steam
[1:50] for diesel electric, Mr. Osborne keeps
[1:53] alive the sacred flames.
[1:57] >> How long does it usually take to get up
[1:59] ahead of steam after you've
[2:02] loaded up the furnace, John?
[2:04] >> Um 10 to 15 minutes. So, where are we at
[2:07] at the moment? We're about 12 and a
[2:09] half.
[2:13] We're just um getting enough fire in
[2:17] getting the fire burned through well
[2:19] enough
