[0:00] See why more people are watching The

[0:01] Early Show.

[0:11] These conventions have come a long way

[0:13] from the days of the smoke-filled room

[0:15] and the brokered nominations. For that

[0:18] matter, nominations are not actually

[0:20] made here anymore.

[0:21] So, as Jim Axelrod reports tonight,

[0:24] they've become much more about Hollywood

[0:26] and Hollywood-style productions, bright

[0:28] lights, and the celebrities they attract

[0:30] like moths.

[0:32] See that guy walking the halls alone?

[0:34] That's Bob Graham, powerful senator from

[0:37] the key state of Florida, former

[0:39] presidential candidate. Thank you. And

[0:42] there's West Virginia's Robert Byrd,

[0:44] dean of the Senate, all alone. The

[0:47] average American If you want to find a

[0:48] crowd here, go find Michael Moore. A

[0:51] filmmaker, not a politician, is the big

[0:54] guest for O'Reilly. I will be more than

[0:57] happy to say I, Bill O'Reilly, would

[0:58] sacrifice my child to secure Lucia. I'm

[1:00] not going to say what you say, Eric.

[1:02] That's You don't believe that.

[1:03] It's not news that the Democratic

[1:05] convention has drawn Glenn Close, Rob

[1:07] Reiner, or Bono. Thank you for listening

[1:11] to an Irish fellow lecture you on your

[1:12] own country.

[1:14] Chuck D, John Cusack, or that woman from

[1:17] The Apprentice. Ladies and gentlemen,

[1:19] Senator Edward Kennedy.

[1:21] It's just that this week the Ben looming

[1:24] large is Affleck, not Franklin. Well,

[1:27] Bob Graham's not Ben Affleck, no offense

[1:29] to the senator. And none of us are.

[1:30] Maybe the biggest difference from the

[1:32] good old days is that there's a lot more

[1:34] time to fill. And in our culture,

[1:36] celebrity always fills the vacuum.

[1:40] You know, there is a certain ADD to the

[1:42] 24-hour news cycle, which is

[1:44] All right.

[1:45] Focus on the convention. This will be

[1:47] fine. This will be John Cusack.

[1:50] That may have been the thinking up to

[1:51] tonight, but now it's time for the

[1:52] Democratic headliners. And if Affleck

[1:55] and Cusack are still the big names after

[1:57] tomorrow night, the Democrats are in big

[2:00] trouble. Jim Axelrod, CBS News, Boston.

[2:04] And that's part of our world tonight.
