[0:42] >> This is the CBS Evening News with Katie
[0:45] Kurrick reporting tonight from
[0:47] Washington.
[0:49] >> Good evening everyone. We're beginning
[0:50] tonight with a major change in our
[0:52] national security policy. The Bush
[0:54] administration was planning a missile
[0:56] defense system to be based in Poland and
[0:59] the Czech Republic to protect Europe
[1:01] from an Iranian attack. But today,
[1:03] President Obama canled that in favor of
[1:06] a different system that he says will be
[1:08] cheaper and more effective. Reaction
[1:11] came quickly from Congress and around
[1:13] the world. Chip Reed is our chief White
[1:15] House correspondent. And Chip, this is
[1:16] controversial to say the least.
[1:19] >> It certainly is, Katie, but the
[1:20] president says it's necessary. He says
[1:22] the threat from Iran has changed
[1:25] dramatically and that requires an
[1:26] entirely new plan for defending against
[1:29] possible attack.
[1:31] This new approach will provide
[1:34] capabilities sooner, build on proven
[1:36] systems, and offer greater defenses
