[0:00] War at home. Pinned My Sunday. All new
[0:02] episodes start at 8:7 central. Tomorrow
[0:04] on Fox.
[0:08] >> Tonight, using the internet to out
[0:10] businesses suspected of hiring illegal
[0:12] aliens. Why some say posting on this
[0:15] website is just like calling 911. Plus,
[0:18] friends and family gather at a memorial
[0:20] service for a young woman killed in a
[0:22] devastating crash.
[0:24] >> She was just really happy girl and it's
[0:26] just devastating. How people say they'll
[0:28] remember Quinn. But first, getting ready
[0:31] for a big storm on a busy travel
[0:33] weekend.
[0:34] >> You want to avoid the black ice, that's
[0:36] for sure.
[0:36] >> Team coverage of your First Live local
[0:38] weather. First on Fox.
[0:41] >> Good evening. Thanks for joining us. I'm
[0:43] Hillilary Hutcherson
[0:44] >> and I'm Kevin Kawari. First on Fox
[0:46] tonight. If you're planning on hitting
[0:47] the road tomorrow, you may be in for a
[0:49] long trip. Rain, wind, and even snow
[0:51] could be headed our way. Today, traffic
[0:53] moves smoothly in most places as some
[0:55] Thanksgiving travelers headed home early
[0:57] to avoid what could be a dangerous drive
[0:59] tomorrow. We have first live local
[1:01] weather team coverage. Meteorologist
[1:02] Drew Jackson will have the latest
[1:03] details about the incoming storm. But we
[1:05] begin with KPTV's David Freighus live in
[1:08] Troutdale tonight.
[1:09] >> Yeah, here in the gorge they have their
[1:10] ice scrapers all ready to go for
[1:12] tomorrow's storm. And all night long,
[1:13] there's been a steady stream of cars
[1:15] after the street lined up for gasoline.
[1:17] It's been a lot of people coming through
[1:19] trying to get ahead of the storm.
[1:23] Tonight, drivers gas up and head back to
[1:26] the highway for summer trip a little
[1:28] earlier than planned.
[1:30] >> We shortened our stay in Walaw Wala with
[1:32] our friends because we heard the weather
[1:33] and we said we're going through the
[1:35] Columbia River Gorge now.
[1:36] >> Tom and Rhonda Walker have a camper
[1:38] shell they know can cause extra
[1:40] headaches. And even though they're from
[1:41] Colorado, once they heard about the
[1:43] possibility of snow in the gorge, they
[1:45] headed west.
[1:47] >> Ice in the gorge can be really bad and
[1:49] nobody can drive in it. So that's, you
[1:51] know, even with chains, it's it's
[1:53] touching.
[1:55] >> Even the most experienced drivers out
[1:56] there know a forecast of snow and ice in
[1:58] the gorge is a dangerous possibility and
[2:01] often means miles out of the way
[2:03] >> because of the ice and the snow and it
[2:05] gets slick and you know, you just have
[2:07] to hang on and do the best you can. So
[2:09] you when you have to go around, you go
[2:10] around.
[2:13] >> Traffic westbound on 84 was heavy
[2:15] tonight, but speed stayed quick.
[2:18] Tomorrow night that might not be the
[2:20] case. The metro area will get more heavy
[2:22] rain and tomorrow morning the typical
[2:25] east winds will chill the gorge,
[2:27] something drivers would rather not deal
[2:28] with.
[2:29] >> The biggest obstacle we found was the
[2:31] wind coming down. Yeah, the roads were
[2:33] good and clear, but the wind was that
[2:36] was challenging.
[2:36] >> And with Mother Nature once again
[2:38] turning on the faucet, drivers know
[2:40] they'll need patience and possibly a
[2:42] backup plan. Our friends have had to
[2:44] stay at the Walmart parking lot at Hood
[2:47] River before because they got trapped in
[2:48] there.
[2:51] >> Tonight we were talking to the folks at
[2:52] the Flying J store here and they say
[2:54] they have been busier today than they
[2:55] expected. Possibly again those people
[2:57] trying to get ahead of the storm. It's
[2:59] already chilly here in Trrowdale. It's
[3:01] about 39° right now and of course
[3:03] expected to get much colder. Live in
[3:05] Troutdale, David Bradus, the 10:00 news.
[3:08] And again, this storm could really mean
[3:10] headaches for drivers, but great
[3:12] conditions for skiers. You're taking a
[3:14] look right now at live video from
[3:15] government camp. Most of Oregon ski
[3:18] areas are now open and ski conditions
[3:20] should get even better. More snow is
[3:22] expected tomorrow. Today, many skiers
[3:24] kicked off the season at Ski Bowl for
[3:26] opening day.
[3:29] >> Oh, looking forward to having a great
[3:30] time. First time out for the uh the 2006
[3:34] season. So, uh looking forward to it.
[3:36] Good snow. pretty early. Thanksgiving
[3:39] weekend, you can't beat it.
[3:41] >> Mount Hood Meadows and Wamtt Pasky area
[3:43] are the only two yet to open. Wamtt
[3:45] plans to open Thursday. A wash out on
[3:48] Oregon 35, of course, has delayed Mount
[3:50] Hood Meadows from opening. That plans to
[3:52] open next month. So, with the storm on
[3:54] the way, when will be the best time for
[3:56] holiday travelers who are headed home?
[3:58] Fox 12 meteorologist Drew Jackson joins
[4:00] us with this answer. Drew?
[4:02] >> Yeah, it looks like now actually the
[4:03] best time to leave. This is the calm
[4:05] before the storm. Actually, it looks
[4:06] like we've got a new storm coming in and
[4:08] it could be a doozy here for much of the
[4:10] Northwest. I want to show you live radar
[4:12] right now because all is quiet for the
[4:14] moment. I'll expand the view though and
[4:15] you can see that farther up to the
[4:16] north, Seattle already starting to get
[4:18] into it and Seattle will be an
[4:20] interesting place weatherwise here in
[4:21] the coming days. Snow is expected to
[4:23] fall up there. But back here locally, we
[4:25] can check out the satellite picture. The
[4:26] clouds just now beginning to increase
[4:27] from the west. And that system to the
[4:29] left of your screen there, that's the
[4:31] one that's headed in our direction that
[4:32] will cause the weather problems for
[4:33] tomorrow. A lot of cold air behind this
[4:36] next system. The coldest air we've seen
[4:37] so far this year. So, there's a high
[4:39] wind warning up for tomorrow along the
[4:41] coast. And a winter storm warning in
[4:42] effect for the Cascades. Another round
[4:44] of very heavy snow up there. The real
[4:46] interesting question though is how low
[4:48] does the snow level go and could it be
[4:50] low enough to give us snow in the metro
[4:52] area? Well, I'll have more information,
[4:54] much more information about that coming
[4:55] up a bit later on.
[4:56] >> Looking forward to that, Drew. Thanks.
[4:58] Also, stay tuned to Fox 12. Of course,
[4:59] we'll have continuing coverage of our
[5:01] weather in this newscast. Also, we'll
[5:03] have some more on how the weather will
[5:05] affect air travel later in the newscast
[5:07] and tomorrow with all the information
[5:09] you need to know on Good Day Oregon,
[5:11] plus the 5:00 news and the 10:00 news.
[5:13] And of course, you can always get the
[5:14] latest on ktv.com.
[5:16] >> An Oregon City fisherman is presumed
[5:19] dead tonight. His boat capsized on the
[5:21] Wamut this morning. 51-year-old Richard
[5:23] Ellis and three other men were fishing
[5:24] on the stretch of river between Oak
[5:26] Grove and Gladstone when their boat went
[5:28] under. All of the men but Ellis were
[5:30] rescued a short time later. KBTV
[5:32] Stephanie Crowovich has the story from
[5:33] News Control.
[5:35] >> The 911 call came in this morning from a
[5:37] homeowner on the river who spotted the
[5:39] fisherman in trouble. We're told three
[5:42] of them were wearing life jackets. One
[5:44] was not. He was last seen swimming
[5:46] toward Rock Island.
[5:49] This video from Air12 shows the swift
[5:51] current on the stretch of the Wamut
[5:53] north of Gladstone. The water
[5:55] temperature was a chilly 47° when this
[5:58] small aluminum boat overturned around
[6:00] 8:15 a.m.
[6:02] >> Hypothermia is going to set in within a
[6:04] matter of, you know, 5 minutes or less.
[6:07] >> You're you're not going to make it.
[6:09] >> Mike Strait is an avid angler who says
[6:11] the river is an especially dangerous
[6:13] place this time of year.
[6:15] >> I feel bad for him. It's way too small
[6:17] of a boat. Condition the river's in
[6:19] right now. The water's moving real fast.
[6:21] There's lots of debris. Uh, you know,
[6:23] they just shouldn't be out there.
[6:26] >> The Clackamus County Sheriff's Office
[6:28] says the men were preparing to anchor
[6:30] for fishing when their anchor line got
[6:32] caught in the boat's prop, causing it to
[6:34] lose power, take on water, and capsize.
[6:38] River rescuers were able to pull three
[6:40] of the fishermen to safety, but a Coast
[6:42] Guard helicopter and search crews were
[6:44] not able to locate the fourth man,
[6:46] 51-year-old Richard Ellis of Oregon
[6:49] City. There's been a lot of deaths here
[6:51] and the water's just so cold. I mean,
[6:53] you'd have to be I don't know, just you
[6:57] have to be very careful.
[6:58] >> Kim Strait says stories like this one
[7:00] make her concerned about her own
[7:02] husband's safety on the WAMIT.
[7:04] >> And it just frightens me every time they
[7:06] go out. He's pretty safe, but I still
[7:09] worry the current. It just it takes you
[7:12] so fast.
[7:12] >> Divers did not participate in the
[7:14] recovery effort this morning because of
[7:16] the swift river conditions. Reporting
[7:18] from News Control tonight, Stephanie
[7:20] Krellovich, the 10:00 news. Gresham
[7:23] police are investigating an assault that
[7:25] sent one man to the hospital with
[7:27] critical injuries. Tonight,
[7:28] investigators say someone attacked the
[7:30] man after midnight in the area between
[7:32] 190th and 193rd on Yamhill Street. Just
[7:36] after noon today, the 21-year-old came
[7:38] into Gresham Urgent Care with a head
[7:40] injury. Medics later took him to Emanuel
[7:42] Hospital where he's now in critical
[7:44] condition. Authorities have not released
[7:46] his name. If you have any information
[7:48] about this case, call Gresham police.
[7:50] >> Eight people are homeless tonight after
[7:52] fire tore through an apartment complex
[7:54] in Tiger. The fire broke out just before
[7:56] 5:00 this morning at the Red Hawk
[7:58] Apartments on Southwest 108th Avenue.
[8:00] Firefighters say when they got there,
[8:01] they saw thick flames coming from the
[8:04] last two apartments. They quickly called
[8:06] a second alarm. The fire damaged at
[8:07] least four apartments in all. People
[8:09] forced out of their home say it's a
[8:11] tough loss, especially during the
[8:12] holidays, but they're glad everyone got
[8:14] out safely.
[8:16] There was a guy that came over and
[8:17] helped us and he was throwing rocks from
[8:20] the from the road at our window to try
[8:23] to get up. So, I don't know if my
[8:24] girlfriend heard the rocks or if she
[8:25] heard the crackling of the of the wood
[8:27] burning, but that's how we got out.
[8:29] >> Investigators say the fire began on the
[8:31] outside of the building, but they're
[8:33] still not sure what sparked it. The Red
[8:35] Cross is helping the people who lost
[8:37] their homes. Family and friends as well
[8:39] as hundreds of members of the Vietnamese
[8:41] community, sorority sisters, and others
[8:43] all said their final farewell farewells
[8:45] today to Quintong. The 20-year-old
[8:48] Oregon State student was killed this
[8:50] past week in a car crash in southern
[8:52] Oregon. KPTV's Marilyn Deutsch reports
[8:54] tonight from the newsroom.
[8:57] With rogue monks and burning incense,
[8:59] the Americanborn daughter of Southeast
[9:01] Asian refugees was remembered today in a
[9:04] Buddhist ceremony.
[9:10] and remembered in two languages, the
[9:13] language of her parents and her own
[9:14] native tongue.
[9:16] >> Many, many thanks.
[9:17] >> 2 days after Thanksgiving, Quinn's
[9:19] grandfather says, "Thank you for a young
[9:22] woman's 20 years. And thanks to those
[9:24] who cared enough to come today.
[9:26] >> I loved Quinn with all my heart."
[9:28] >> Quinn Trong died last Sunday on her way
[9:30] back to Corvalis from a frat party at
[9:33] Diamond Lake. The Jeep Wrangler she and
[9:35] fellow OSU student Jeremy Schmidt were
[9:38] driving in veered off a 70foot
[9:40] embankment on Highway 138 into the
[9:43] chilly, swollen, fastmoving Umpqua
[9:46] River.
[9:46] >> So suddenly we uh we feel sorry about
[9:51] that a lot because she's so young.
[9:53] >> Young and it would seem full of promise.
[9:55] three times president of her class at
[9:57] Tigert High School. A Delta Gamma
[10:00] sorority sister at OSU and a girl whose
[10:03] smile could brighten up your day even
[10:05] before she had a full set of teeth. A
[10:08] young woman whose compassion showed
[10:10] through the camera lens and then did not
[10:12] end when no one was looking.
[10:14] >> She makes sure everybody okay and she
[10:16] check it out all of us and uh that's the
[10:19] good thing about her. That's I remember.
[10:21] She always was like sweetheart and
[10:23] honey. Like she was just really happy
[10:25] girl and it's just devastating. She was
[10:28] really sweet girl.
[10:29] >> Quinn Trong's parents immigrated
[10:31] separately from Vietnam in the 1980s.
[10:34] They met here in America in an English
[10:36] class at PCC. Quinn was their oldest
[10:40] child. In the Fox 12 newsroom, Marilyn
[10:42] Deutsch, the 10:00 news. And Jeremy
[10:45] Schmidt of Medford was likely driving
[10:47] the car, police say, when it crashed.
[10:48] Rescuers have not found his body yet.
[10:51] They do plan to resume their search for
[10:52] him when the weather clears up next
[10:54] week.
[10:55] >> A little boy who disappeared at Crater
[10:57] Lake last month is remembered tonight
[10:59] for his big smile and love of the
[11:01] outdoors. Sammy Belulkkey was
[11:03] sightseeing with his father on the north
[11:04] side of the lake when he suddenly ran
[11:06] off into the woods. Searchers combed the
[11:08] area for days, but found no sign of
[11:09] Sammy. Today, family and friends
[11:11] gathered at First Presbyterian Church in
[11:13] Portland to honor him.
[11:16] And the gift that warms my soul is the
[11:19] life that Ken and I brought into this
[11:22] world.
[11:25] His name is Samuel.
[11:27] >> The family says crews will begin
[11:29] searching for Sammy's body once again
[11:31] after the snow melts.
[11:33] >> The 10:00 news is just getting started.
[11:36] >> A bachelor party has a deadly ending.
[11:38] Why police shot 50 rounds at a car and
[11:40] killed a groom on the day of his
[11:42] wedding. Keeping the troops safe in the
[11:45] war on terror. How extra protection on
[11:47] these Humvees could help more military
[11:49] members make it home.
[11:50] >> A family is looking for your help to
[11:52] bring home a missing statue. Why the
[11:54] thieves may have needed to do some heavy
[11:55] lifting to pull off this heist.
[11:58] >> Planning to have that leftover turkey
[12:00] again for dinner tomorrow night. The
[12:02] tips you'll want to hear before you
[12:03] reheat the bird.
[12:05] >> And an uninvited guest comes crashing
[12:08] through one home this Thanksgiving
[12:09] weekend.
[12:10] >> He hit me in the chest. knocked me down
[12:14] and then went on over me.
[12:15] >> Why a family is counting its blessings
[12:17] after a deer tramples through their
[12:19] house.
[12:21] You're watching the 10:00 news first
[12:24] live local.
[12:29] For a complete look at your weekend
[12:30] morning news, plus your first live local
[12:33] weather forecast, turn to Good Day
[12:35] Oregon Sunday, starting at 6.
[12:41] It might mean less stops at the pump
[12:44] or that you've got better things to
[12:45] spend your money on than gas.
[12:48] Maybe it's just doing your part
[12:52] or being a part of something bigger.
[12:58] Everyone has their reason. Maybe that's
[13:01] why Toyota has more hybrids on the road
[13:03] than anyone else. Hybrid Synergy Drive
[13:06] from Toyota.
[13:08] We are the class of 2020. I am the class
[13:12] of 2022.
[13:14] >> I am 2014. College is closer than you
[13:17] think. That's why the Oregon College
[13:19] Savings Plan offers taxfree growth,
[13:21] taxfree withdrawals for qualified
[13:22] expenses, and an Oregon State tax
[13:24] deduction every year.
[13:26] >> If your plans include college, we have a
[13:28] plan for you.
[13:29] >> I'm the class of 2010.
[13:32] >> Invest in their future with a plan that
[13:34] works for you. The Oregon College
[13:36] Savings Plan.
[13:38] >> A robber holds up a local market, but
[13:40] the clerk won't back down. Here, what he
[13:42] told the man who threatened to shoot on
[13:44] the 10:00 news first live local.
[13:48] >> Giving a gift from Jared can cause quite
[13:50] a stir.
[13:51] >> Hey everyone, he went to Jared.
[13:55] >> He went to Jared. He went to Jeremy.
[13:58] >> He went to Jared.
[13:59] >> You went to Jared. Not every jewelry
[14:02] store gets this reaction, but nothing
[14:04] else is Jared. Jared's selection is
[14:06] truly extensive, built piece by piece to
[14:08] offer distinctiveness, attractive
[14:09] pricing and style.
[14:11] >> I went to Jared.
[14:13] >> That's Jared, the one and only Galleria
[14:15] of Jewelry.
[14:16] >> You went to Jared.
[14:19] >> Subway Restaurants has eight delicious
[14:20] sandwiches with six grams of fat or
[14:22] less. All made on freshly baked bread.
[14:26] Now, this BK Stackers has 54 gram of
[14:28] fat. 54 g.
[14:32] That's more fat than in all eight of
[14:34] these Subway sandwiches combined.
[14:36] Burger King's crowning achievement.
[14:39] So, where am I going with all this? I'm
[14:41] going to Subway restaurants.
[14:44] Subway.
[14:46] Eat fresh.
[14:48] >> Can you pick the NFL winners each week?
[14:50] Log on to kptv.com/contests
[14:52] and play Toyota's football frenzy.
[14:54] >> You could win a 50-inch plasma TV.
[14:55] >> Toyota's Football Frenzy on ktv.com.
[14:58] Homer's landed the sweetest job in town.
[15:00] >> You kids like ice cream?
[15:02] >> I'm a uniard.
[15:03] >> The Simpsons. Sunday at 8 on Fox 12
[15:05] Oregon.
[15:12] >> A bold clerk kept him from getting away
[15:14] with the loot, but tonight Fox 12's most
[15:16] wanted is still on the run after he
[15:18] tried to rob a convenience store.
[15:20] Hillsboro police say it happened around
[15:22] 6:30 this morning at the cost less food
[15:24] store on TV Highway. Authorities say the
[15:27] man demanded a carton of cigarettes from
[15:29] the clerk and then showed a gun. The
[15:31] clerk reportedly refused to give him the
[15:33] cigarette several times, so the man
[15:35] left. Witnesses say he's driving a 1985
[15:38] Toyota pickup. Call Hillsboro police if
[15:40] you have any information. Police are
[15:43] trying to track down the shooter who
[15:45] sprayed a house with gunfire in
[15:46] Northeast Portland. It happened at about
[15:48] 3:45 this morning on Northeast Alton
[15:51] Street. No one was hurt, but the front
[15:52] of the house, including at least one
[15:54] window, is pockmarked with bullet holes.
[15:56] A car sitting out front was also hit. A
[15:59] bullet went through one boy's bedroom,
[16:01] and at first, he didn't even think he
[16:02] was hearing gunshots.
[16:05] >> There's some P, you know, some
[16:07] firecracker noise or whatever, whatever.
[16:09] I didn't think it was a gun or
[16:10] something. And I just heard a window
[16:12] shield. So, I walked out the thing and
[16:14] then this bullet just came to my room.
[16:16] >> Police did not find any suspects when
[16:18] they got there. If you have any
[16:19] information, call Portland police.
[16:24] >> A Marine killed in the fight for Iraq
[16:26] was honored in Vancouver today.
[16:28] 21-year-old Marine Corporal Michael
[16:29] Schaw was killed in Iraq November 14th
[16:32] when his armored vehicle was hit by a
[16:33] roadside bomb. Scho had been stationed
[16:36] in Hawaii. His widow and baby daughter,
[16:38] who was born last month, live in
[16:39] Vancouver. A motorcycle honor guard
[16:41] escorted Scho's body from the Portland
[16:43] International Airport to a Vancouver
[16:45] cemetery on Wednesday.
[16:49] In the war on terror tonight, British
[16:51] Royal Marines battled it out with
[16:53] Taliban fighters in southern Afghanistan
[16:55] today. It's the second time in a week
[16:57] these Marines have come under rocket
[16:59] mortar and sniper fire. During the
[17:01] two-hour battle, the Royal Marines fired
[17:03] back after the Taliban's small arms
[17:05] fire. The Marines used helicopters to
[17:07] circle and fire. And even as the Marines
[17:10] started to withdraw, the Taliban
[17:11] continued to fire. Experts say the
[17:13] Taliban has a huge force in the region.
[17:16] The Marines are working on
[17:17] reconstruction in the area. And as the
[17:20] violence in the Middle East continues,
[17:21] the US military is beefing up efforts to
[17:24] give troops more protection. More armor
[17:26] is on the way for troops on two fronts,
[17:28] Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, many
[17:30] Humvees have already been reinforced
[17:32] this week with extra layers of metal on
[17:34] the doors and turrets. They say it's
[17:36] necessary since roadside bombs have
[17:38] become increasingly more sophisticated
[17:40] and can easily tear through Humvees that
[17:43] are just 2 years old.
[17:47] Looks like weather is not the only
[17:48] obstacle for your holiday drive home.
[17:50] Gas prices are up again. Let's get a
[17:52] price check now from our Fox 12 Pump
[17:54] Patrol. Oregon gas prices are the second
[17:56] highest in the nation. The state's
[17:58] average for a gallon of regular was 258
[18:00] today. The national average was 224. The
[18:03] cheapest gas we could find in the area
[18:04] was 242. That was at Costco in Northeast
[18:07] Portland on Airport Way and Sandy
[18:09] Leathers in Northeast Portland and Fred
[18:10] Meyer in Scapuse. To find cheap gas in
[18:13] your area, you can check our website,

[18:20] >> In news from around the Northwest
[18:21] tonight, a group of Muslims protested at
[18:23] CEK airport today. The demonstration
[18:26] comes after six Muslim clerics were
[18:28] kicked off a US Airways flight in
[18:30] Minneapolis this week. The group prayed
[18:32] across from the US Airways ticket
[18:34] counter. Organizers hope similar
[18:36] protests will continue at airports
[18:38] nationwide.
[18:40] The Kuz Bay community is remembering
[18:42] three firefighters who died on the job
[18:45] four years ago. It happened when an auto
[18:47] parts store caught fire and the roof
[18:49] collapsed. The firefighters had been on
[18:51] top of the roof when it caved in. A
[18:53] memorial has now been placed at the town
[18:55] city hall. It features life-sized
[18:57] statues of the three men as well as 11
[19:00] trees representing the number of
[19:01] children the fathers left behind. Two
[19:05] Washington men died when a snowcovered
[19:07] tree fell on their truck. One of the
[19:09] victims is a longtime deacon at a church
[19:11] in Tacoma. Tonight, his parishioners
[19:13] gathered for a memorial ceremony. The
[19:15] freak accident happened on Interstate
[19:17] 90. The deacon was driving with three
[19:19] passengers, including his own
[19:21] 19-year-old son. They'd been on a
[19:23] hunting trip. The other victim is a
[19:25] 22-year-old man.
[19:27] >> You're stuck with the mystery of what
[19:29] happened and the mystery of their death.
[19:31] Death of a a man in his prime and a
[19:34] younger man on a holiday weekend. The
[19:37] deacon's son and a third passenger
[19:39] escaped the wreckage by crawling out a
[19:41] window.
[19:42] >> A local rehab facility isn't letting
[19:44] thieves get in the way of its holiday
[19:45] fundraiser. Someone stole the Teen
[19:47] Challenge trailer from a Kmart parking
[19:49] lot in Northeast Portland. It contains
[19:51] supplies for the Christmas tree lot,
[19:52] which opened last Friday. Despite the
[19:54] theft, members of the organization say
[19:56] they feel fortunate. They've managed to
[19:58] keep the lot open with generous support
[19:59] from the community.
[20:01] >> You know, I I'm just reminded that uh
[20:03] there are still a lot of good people.
[20:05] There are still a lot of good people
[20:06] that want to help, that want to touch
[20:08] and change lives, want to help other
[20:10] people, and that that's great to see
[20:12] that.
[20:13] >> Good to hear. Students say if the thief
[20:15] returns the trailer, they'll offer
[20:17] forgiveness. A family in northeast
[20:19] Portland is asking for your help tonight
[20:20] finding a treasured statue. Take a look.
[20:22] It was a six-foot original wood carving
[20:24] of a bear on his hind legs. Police say
[20:27] it's likely worth more than $1,000. The
[20:29] Ellenburggs named the big guy Bear and
[20:31] say he brought them a lot of great
[20:33] memories over the 10 years they had him.
[20:35] And they say Bear brought a lot of
[20:36] smiles to people walking by, especially
[20:39] children.
[20:40] >> He was just gorgeous, you know. And to
[20:43] come home and find him gone, it it was
[20:45] very devastating. I'm not kidding. No,
[20:48] no questions asked. Just please bring
[20:50] him back or let us know where we can get
[20:52] him.
[20:53] >> Looks like someone recently went on to
[20:55] the Ellenburgg's property and stole Bear
[20:56] while the family was on vacation. The
[20:58] statue was actually bolted to a tree
[21:00] stump near the front yard. The family
[21:02] says a few months ago, someone also took
[21:04] their flag pole
[21:06] >> and I spoke with them and they just say
[21:07] they're not going to press charges. They
[21:09] just want it back. So, if anyone sees
[21:10] it, please give it back.
[21:11] >> Let's hope for the best.
[21:12] >> In other news now, it may not be strict
[21:14] security measures at the airport that
[21:16] could have you pulling your hair out
[21:17] this weekend.
[21:17] >> We'll tell you how Mother Nature could
[21:19] make it tough for you or your loved ones
[21:20] to get home.
[21:22] >> Also, how delicious is that after
[21:24] Thanksgiving sandwich? Yum. But that
[21:26] bacteria that could be breeding on those
[21:29] leftovers could make you sick. How to
[21:30] polish off the bird safely coming up.
[21:33] >> Real nice to see that sunshine here this
[21:35] afternoon. But now the clouds are
[21:36] thickening up again. It's 40° at the
[21:38] airport. The east wind picking up as
[21:40] well. The east wind off in the extreme
[21:42] wind this time of year. Live a look
[21:44] outside at the Christmas tree Pioneer
[21:45] Courthouse Square. Could that Christmas
[21:47] tree be coated in white sometime soon?
[21:49] The forecast still to come.

[22:26] customers.
[22:29] >> You may get cancer, but I doubt you'll
[22:32] get the truth from cigarette companies.
[22:35] They keep saying you can't get hooked on
[22:38] cigarettes even though many smokers who
[22:41] lose their vocal cords can't quit. I'm
[22:45] Janet S. I was a model in cigarette eds
[22:49] and I convinced many young people to
[22:52] smoke. I hope I can convince you not to.

[23:24] place to be is GI Joe's. Gifts for their
[23:27] favorite season. Still tonight, too. Who
[23:29] makes a Fox 12 final cut? A wouldbe
[23:31] bride won't have a wedding, but a
[23:32] funeral for her groom after a bachelor
[23:34] party turns deadly.
[23:35] >> It's a Craigslist ad that has police
[23:37] interested. Is someone really trying to
[23:39] sell a baby?
[23:40] >> And a website is getting criticism for
[23:41] exposing employers who hire illegal
[23:44] aliens. That's all coming up in Fox 12
[23:46] Final Cut.
[23:48] >> No.
[23:53] >> All I dreamed about was coming to
[23:55] America, but no English, no work.
[24:02] I just needed someone to believe in me.
[24:05] >> Miss Miss, you learn English like me and
[24:10] get a job at Goodwill over there.
[24:14] I just needed a chance.

[24:53] In our health watch tonight, a warning
[24:55] about those Thanksgiving leftovers.
[24:57] Experts say it's best to keep leftovers
[24:59] in shallow containers in the fridge and
[25:01] they recommend eating it all within
[25:03] three or four days. So, hurry up, I
[25:05] guess. Also, when reheating in the oven,
[25:07] make sure the temperature is at 165
[25:09] degrees. And if you're going to use the
[25:10] microwave, be careful with your
[25:12] plastics. The FDA warns some plastics
[25:14] have a chemical that when heated at high
[25:16] levels can cause cancer.
[25:18] >> The popular supplement folic acid may
[25:20] not help with the risk of breast cancer,
[25:22] but a new study shows it could help the
[25:25] risk of having a heart attack.
[25:26] Researchers say folic acid lowers levels
[25:29] of homocyine in the blood. They say it's
[25:31] an amino acid that can damage the lining
[25:33] of arteries and cause potentially deadly
[25:35] heart problems. Doctors say the report
[25:37] is also a good reminder that people
[25:39] should get blood tests to check their
[25:41] homoyine levels and possible risk for
[25:44] heart problems.
[25:47] Well, yet again this month, the weather
[25:49] starting to get interesting and we've
[25:50] got low snow levels coming up in the
[25:52] forecast. But what is a 500t snow level
[25:54] mean? I'll have some elevation maps for
[25:56] you, plus the 7-day forecast coming up.
[25:59] >> Also, there's an important role at a
[26:00] local hospital that has nothing to do
[26:02] with medicine. A different kind of care
[26:04] that's making a difference for kids with
[26:06] cancer.
[26:07] >> Rocking out on the front, but troops

[29:39] When children go to Dorbecker Hospital
[29:41] for cancer treatment, they need more
[29:42] than a cure.
[29:43] >> Yeah. Kids can also uh use emotional
[29:46] support and practical advice from people
[29:48] who have faced a similar challenge.
[29:50] KBTV's Jim Hyde reports they can find
[29:52] some of that from the Nick Wilson
[29:54] Charitable Group.
[29:56] >> We put in our care kits things that we
[29:58] think will um help the families get and
[30:01] the child get through transplant a
[30:02] little more comfortably. blankets to
[30:05] toiletries to hats for their cold heads.
[30:08] >> Many of the children here at the
[30:09] pediatric oncology unit at Dornbecker
[30:12] are getting bone marrow transplants and
[30:14] other heroic treatments for their
[30:15] cancers. The bag full of non-medinal
[30:18] stuff they're offered is an introduction
[30:20] to what the Nick Wilson charitable group
[30:22] can do for them.
[30:23] >> It's a very stressful, lonely, scary
[30:27] time for families. and um we just want
[30:31] to try to make that less scary and
[30:35] stressful for them in any way we can.
[30:37] >> Nick Wilson is Joe Met's son who died of
[30:39] leukemia here in 2001. Her family's
[30:42] awful experience can be awfully helpful
[30:45] to others.
[30:46] >> The kids are amazing. They deal with
[30:49] this in ways that are just unbelievable.
[30:52] And so it's really the families I think
[30:53] that suffer.
[30:54] >> Dr. Ferrell says she and her colleagues
[30:56] are warmly realistic with their young
[30:58] patients, helping them to tolerate the
[31:00] best treatments, medications, and
[31:02] chemotherapy available. In the oncology
[31:04] unit, medical staff, social workers, and
[31:07] volunteers recognize that whole families
[31:09] are affected by their child's
[31:11] hospitalization.
[31:12] >> A parent needs to be with their child
[31:14] when they're ill and what happens to the
[31:16] job, you know, what happens to their
[31:17] income. Working through the social
[31:19] workers here, the Nick Wilson Foundation
[31:21] offers some payments for housing and
[31:23] support to families in need in the form
[31:25] of gas and telephone cards.
[31:27] >> Grief support if that's needed. Um any
[31:31] number of things as you can imagine.
[31:32] There's a big unmet financial need for a
[31:36] lot of these families.
[31:36] >> He never went to school or anything like
[31:38] that because he was always here. So I
[31:40] was kind of like his companion. But in
[31:42] the five years since her little
[31:43] brother's death, the needs for patients
[31:46] siblings have not lessened.
[31:48] >> You you need tons of support from
[31:49] somebody who can take you to soccer
[31:50] practice to where do I spend the night
[31:52] cuz my parents are in the hospital.
[31:54] >> So Haley, her mom, and supporters of
[31:56] their charitable group also offer
[31:58] practical advice about how families can
[32:00] organize their own support networks.
[32:02] >> People are good-hearted and they want to
[32:05] help.
[32:06] >> Jill Mets does that in the name of Nick
[32:07] Wilson in Southwest Portland. Jim Hyde,
[32:10] the 10:00 news.

[32:13] Wilson Charitable Group, just go to our

[32:21] >> Meteorologist Drew Jackson joins us now.
[32:23] Looking forward to uh tomorrow and one
[32:25] of the busiest travel days of the year.
[32:27] Well, not not in a positive way. I mean,
[32:29] fast forwarding to tomorrow. Uh busiest
[32:31] travel day of the year. One of and uh
[32:33] yeah,
[32:34] >> it's going to be interesting. I I was
[32:36] going to say I'm looking forward to
[32:37] Thursday because I think it's going to
[32:38] be the first day this next few coming up
[32:40] where weather will not be a newsmaker
[32:42] finally. So, lots.
[32:44] >> Looking forward to Thursday between now
[32:45] and then. Lots to talk about. We'll
[32:47] start uh quickly here with the nuts and
[32:48] bolts tonight. Talk about what's going
[32:49] on right now. Live picture outside. All
[32:51] calm, all quiet for the moment. Although
[32:53] that east wind starting to pick up. Live
[32:54] radar not showing much of anything here
[32:56] in the Pacific Northwest in specific
[32:59] northwest Oregon. Not having any radar
[33:01] returns at the moment, but sliding a
[33:02] little farther north here. Seattle
[33:04] starting getting into it and a few light
[33:06] showers offshore. Quick look at the
[33:07] temperatures right now. Portland at 40,
[33:09] Salem's at 40, a story of 42. So
[33:12] obviously too warm to snow at this
[33:13] moment and I think it'll be that way
[33:15] throughout the night tonight. Reban's
[33:16] down to 30, Burns at 20, Baker City,
[33:18] you're at 23 and Hermiston at 31°. All
[33:20] right, the next weather maker offshore
[33:22] right in here. Center of low pressure
[33:24] right about there. And it looks like
[33:26] it's going to track just like that. So
[33:29] north of most of Oregon, northwest
[33:32] Oregon especially. And that means we're
[33:33] going to get a south wind up into that
[33:35] low pressure. That's important because
[33:36] two things. It's going to cause some
[33:38] high winds to really pick up along the
[33:39] coast. Could see some gusts to 65 miles
[33:41] an hour. That's why a high wind warning
[33:42] is in effect. And I bet we could get
[33:44] some southerntherly wind gusts up into
[33:45] the 35 maybe even 40 mph range tomorrow.
[33:48] There'll be an east wind through the
[33:49] gorge as well. Should this low move
[33:51] farther south and a couple days ago
[33:53] looked like that was possibility. We get
[33:54] more of an easterly low towards that low
[33:56] and that would pull cold air farther out
[33:58] of the gorge. That would be a better
[33:59] snow setup for us. As it turns out, that
[34:02] doesn't look to be the case for tomorrow
[34:04] and tomorrow night. But a lot of heavy
[34:06] snow for the Cascades here coming up.
[34:07] You start getting into these pink and
[34:08] purple colors here. We're talking 20 25
[34:11] ines by 7:00 Monday evening. So
[34:13] certainly a huge snow maker for those of
[34:15] you traveling tomorrow. It's going to be
[34:17] rough over the passes. Now, let's time
[34:18] it out here in the rain and snow
[34:19] forecast. Overnight, there could be some
[34:21] wet snow down to about 1,000 ft, but
[34:23] valley locations stay rain. Snow, of
[34:25] course, in the Cascades. During the day
[34:27] tomorrow, some slightly warmer air moves
[34:28] in with that south wind. the snow level
[34:30] goes up to about 3,000 ft. But look at
[34:32] the white returning on the map for
[34:33] tomorrow night. If we have some snow
[34:35] down to low elevations, best chance of
[34:37] it happening is tomorrow night into
[34:40] Monday morning and then perhaps snow
[34:42] showers scattered about during the day
[34:43] Monday, but they would be wet snow
[34:45] showers, probably not sticking. Now,
[34:46] elevation wise, we're going to be
[34:48] talking a lot about that over the coming
[34:49] days. You can see the areas on white
[34:51] here, mainly the highest hills in the
[34:54] immediate metro area above 1,000 ft. But
[34:56] when I shade the areas in white above
[34:57] 500 ft, you can see the West Hills there
[34:59] starting to get uh along Highway 26 here
[35:02] towards Gresham. And then closer into
[35:03] the metro area here, you can see the
[35:05] West Hills to Halen Mountain, Mount
[35:07] Scott, all these areas above 500 ft.
[35:09] Otherwise, uh you're going to be mainly
[35:11] in the clear because these are the
[35:12] probabilities of sticking snow. Not much
[35:14] tonight, just about a 60% chance above
[35:17] 1,000 ft. But then tomorrow, it all
[35:19] melts as warmer air moves in. Again,
[35:20] tomorrow night gets more interesting.
[35:22] Perhaps a 90% chance of snow, sticking
[35:24] snow above a thousand feet tomorrow
[35:26] night and about 50/50 above 500 feet.
[35:28] And I'll put those chances the same for
[35:30] the day Monday. Even sea level about a
[35:31] 10% chance I think of sticking snow.
[35:33] That's not a great chance, but the
[35:35] chances there. Forecast details now.
[35:37] Busy night tonight with the high wind
[35:38] warning and same story tomorrow. The
[35:40] snow level bouncing up and down a bit in
[35:42] the coast range as some cold air moves
[35:43] in then some warmer air as well. Wamut
[35:45] Valley temperatures in the 30s in the
[35:47] morning. Rainy and windy tomorrow. No
[35:48] threat of snow in the valley. South
[35:50] winds gusting to 35. Central and eastern
[35:52] Oregon, a winter storm warning for the
[35:53] gorge about 500 feet. And there'll be
[35:55] some rain and snow showers tomorrow. All
[35:57] snow showers tomorrow night. Huge storm
[35:59] in the Cascades. Winter storm warning, 1
[36:01] to two feet of snow. Not good travel
[36:04] conditions up in the mountains tomorrow.
[36:05] Portland, rainy and windy. 38 in the
[36:07] morning. Still 40 at noon. 45. That's it
[36:09] for our high temperature. Cold air
[36:11] really moves in tomorrow night. We could
[36:12] have snow showers again tomorrow night.
[36:14] 30s in the morning west of town. 40s in
[36:16] the afternoon. East side temperatures
[36:18] also middle 40s for high temperatures
[36:19] with that gorge wind really blowing out
[36:21] of the uh out of the east in the morning
[36:23] but then ending during the afternoon
[36:25] switching to a west wind. All right,
[36:27] Monday cold showers 39 that's it and
[36:29] then windy and very cold for much of the
[36:31] week coming up. You can see lots of
[36:33] sunshine though so that'll be good news
[36:34] even though it'll be cold. Stephanie is
[36:36] tomorrow Stephanie is in tomorrow
[36:37] morning with the latest beginning at 6.

[40:32] >> The final cut starts with news from
[40:34] across America tonight where in New York
[40:36] a bachelor party came to a deadly end
[40:38] after police shot and killed the wouldbe
[40:40] groom as he was leaving a strip club.
[40:43] The shooting, which also left two other
[40:45] men hospitalized, drew angry protests
[40:47] from family members and community
[40:48] leaders today. Witnesses say as the
[40:51] alleged victims were driving away, they
[40:53] hit an unmarked police van filled with
[40:55] plaincloed officers. Authorities say
[40:57] police fired 50 rounds at their car.
[41:00] Police say they thought one of the men
[41:02] might have a gun. Well, the incident
[41:03] apparently stemmed from an undercover
[41:05] investigation inside the club.
[41:08] Investigators in Ohio are trying to
[41:10] figure out whether a shooting that
[41:12] killed an 11-year-old boy was an
[41:14] accident. Police say a 12-year-old boy
[41:16] shot the 11-year-old in the head with a
[41:18] small caliber handgun on Thanksgiving.
[41:20] The younger boy died a few hours later.
[41:23] Police originally arrested his uncle for
[41:24] failing to keep a gun away from
[41:26] children, but the charge has since been
[41:28] dropped. Now, prosecutors say they may
[41:30] still take the case to a grand jury.
[41:33] >> A truck flipped and caused quite a mess
[41:35] in Minnesota today. The semi flipped on
[41:37] a St. Paul Bridge this morning, spilling
[41:38] chemicals all over the road. Take a look
[41:40] at that. Authorities had said it shut
[41:41] the bridge down so crews could clean up
[41:43] the spill. The white mess you see is
[41:45] lime. It's a chemical produced when
[41:47] limestone is heated up. It's not clear
[41:49] when the bridge will reopen or if anyone
[41:51] was hurt. Police are investigating the
[41:53] cause of the crash. A shootout lands a
[41:55] police officer and a teenage suspect in
[41:57] the hospital in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
[41:59] Police were serving a search warrant to
[42:01] the boy who is suspected of raping a
[42:03] woman at gunpoint. They say the boy
[42:05] fired at the officer, hitting him in a
[42:07] bulletproof vest. The officer shot back,
[42:09] hitting the boy in the torso several
[42:10] times. The boy is in critical condition
[42:12] tonight. The officer is expected to
[42:15] recover. Cars, furniture, jobs. You can
[42:17] find just about anything on Craigslist,
[42:19] but babies in San Diego. A posting
[42:22] appeared Thursday offering a free baby
[42:24] to a good home. Now, San Diego police
[42:26] are trying to figure out if someone is
[42:28] really trying to give a baby away.
[42:29] Whoever posted the ad claims his
[42:31] ex-girlfriend had the baby a few weeks
[42:33] ago, but now the baby sits in his closet
[42:36] and cries. Craigslist has since pulled
[42:39] the ad.
[42:40] >> A surprised visitor crashed into a
[42:42] Virginia family's home yesterday. The
[42:44] family says a deer broke through a
[42:46] window in the living room. A
[42:47] seven-month-old baby was just below that
[42:50] window. The deer just missed hitting the
[42:52] baby, but kept running and knocked over
[42:54] her grandfather. It then went into the
[42:56] kitchen and kicked an 8-year-old in the
[42:58] head. But get this, the little boy was
[43:00] actually wearing a football helmet at
[43:02] the time. No one was hurt, but the
[43:04] family says the unwelcome visitor left a
[43:06] lot of damage.
[43:08] He was kicking
[43:10] and he was kicking my son's legs even
[43:14] even to the point that he actually uh
[43:17] tore his blue jeans that he had on and
[43:20] his arms were black from here to here.
[43:23] >> Now, neighbors eventually tied the deer
[43:25] up and got it out of the house. Nearly a
[43:28] dozen people are hurt after a stairwell
[43:30] collapsed in eastern Tennessee. It
[43:32] happened at a rental cabin in the
[43:33] popular tourist town of Gatlinburgg.
[43:36] Some 30 members of a family were all
[43:38] posing for a Thanksgiving Day picture on
[43:40] the stairs when the stairs gave way.
[43:42] Five people, including a baby, had to be
[43:44] airlifted to the hospital, but everyone
[43:46] is expected to survive.
[43:48] >> Folks in Minnesota may end up with a
[43:50] Charlie Brown Christmas tree next year
[43:52] if they're lucky. State officials say a
[43:54] drought is taking a toll on young trees
[43:56] that are still growing. Tree farm owners
[43:58] say this year's mature trees are
[44:00] healthy, but they were planted three
[44:01] years ago. Almost all the trees planted
[44:03] since then have died due to dry
[44:05] conditions to keep, excuse me, to keep
[44:08] next year's crop alive. Many farmers are
[44:10] installing expensive irrigation systems,
[44:12] which has caused them to raise prices on
[44:14] this year's Christmas trees. A
[44:16] California parish is supporting American
[44:18] troops by sending prayer cards and
[44:20] iPods. About two weeks ago, the
[44:22] Cornerstone Fellowship in Liverour
[44:24] started raising almost $16,000 to arm
[44:27] our troops with MP3 players. iPod
[44:29] technology allows soldiers to use
[44:31] podcasts to receive messages and even
[44:33] church services from home. Troops say
[44:35] they appreciate the effort.
[44:38] >> It makes me really happy to know that
[44:40] there's people out there that try and
[44:42] make part of their effort to help
[44:44] benefit someone else's lives as people
[44:46] are out there trying to fight for
[44:47] theirs.
[44:48] >> iPod manufacturer Apple is also helping
[44:50] the effort by providing free shipping
[44:52] and inscribing troops names on each
[44:54] unit. Retailers are dreaming of a green
[44:57] Christmas and after this weekend, it
[44:59] looks like they'll be right on track.
[45:01] Shoppers were out in full force on Black
[45:03] Friday, according to a national research
[45:05] group that tracks sales at mall-based
[45:07] stores. Total sales for the day after
[45:09] Thanksgiving bonanza rose 6% from last
[45:12] year. That's almost $9 million.
[45:15] Economists say this could be a sign of a
[45:16] buoyant consumer spending, which will
[45:18] prop up the US economy.
[45:21] >> Some Americans are using the internet to
[45:23] tackle illegal immigration. The
[45:25] California based website we hire
[45:26] aliens.com puts pressure on businesses
[45:29] that hire undocumented workers. The
[45:31] website lists 2400 companies in 47
[45:34] states that allegedly employ illegal
[45:36] workers. People can report suspected
[45:38] violators anonymously. Critics say it
[45:40] encourages people to take the law into
[45:42] their own hands, but the site's creators
[45:44] say what they're doing is no different
[45:46] than a neighbor calling 911 after
[45:48] witnessing a crime. Right now, more than
[45:50] 30 Oregon businesses are listed on the
[45:52] website.
[45:56] In the Middle East crisis tonight, the
[45:57] Palestinian government reached a
[45:59] ceasefire agreement with Israel today,
[46:01] just hours after air strikes rain down
[46:03] on a mini bus east of Gaza City. One
[46:06] Palestinian fighter died in that attack
[46:08] and three others were hurt. Palestinian
[46:10] President Makmoud Abbas told the Israeli
[46:12] prime minister today that Palestinian
[46:14] rebels will stop firing rockets at
[46:16] Israel from Gaza. Israel responded by
[46:19] pledging to halt attacks in the
[46:21] territory. The ceasefire went into
[46:23] effect just a few hours ago.
[46:29] >> Well, as a holiday weekend wraps up
[46:30] tomorrow, many Americans will be hopping
[46:32] on planes headed for home. But the
[46:34] weather forecasted for tomorrow in
[46:35] Oregon, could offer some challenges for
[46:37] air travelers. KPTV's Drew Jackson has
[46:39] the details you'll want to hear if
[46:41] you're traveling.
[46:41] >> Yeah, Kevin. Actually, the worst of the
[46:43] travel weather, a lot like Wednesday
[46:45] here when this holiday started, is going
[46:46] to be right here in the Pacific
[46:47] Northwest. And if you have travel plans
[46:49] by air, beyond the Northwest, it
[46:51] actually looks pretty good. Come on over
[46:52] here. You can see the map. And you can
[46:55] see that aside from the Northwest, so
[46:57] much of the United States is really
[46:59] going to be in the clear. So that's
[47:00] great news if you're traveling all the
[47:01] way to the east coast of the United
[47:02] States looking good. There just could be
[47:04] a few rain showers in the midsection of
[47:06] the country, but nothing that would trip
[47:07] up the flights or the airports or
[47:09] anything like that. But again, here in
[47:10] the Pacific Northwest and Northern
[47:12] California, that's where the issues will
[47:13] be with some rain, some gusty winds, and
[47:15] a lot of snow, especially over the
[47:16] Cascade Passes. And if you're going to
[47:18] be in the car, watch out for the
[47:19] Columbia Gorge tomorrow morning with
[47:20] some accumulating snow there. Should be
[47:22] rain in the afternoon. Cascade passes
[47:24] kind of a mess all day long with a lot
[47:26] of heavy snow. So that's the situation.
[47:28] If you're traveling both around the
[47:29] country and also here locally, Kevin and
[47:31] Hillary, back to you.
[47:32] >> Yeah, we are really getting the brunt of
[47:33] it. Drew, thank you. If you're dreading
[47:35] long lines and chaos at the airports
[47:36] this holiday season, there might be a
[47:38] way around it. The registered travel
[47:40] program started after the 911 attacks,
[47:42] but it may be expanding. Right now,
[47:44] passengers pay about $100 a year to have
[47:46] the TSA do a background check on them
[47:48] ahead of time. Those passengers carry a
[47:51] smart card, which lets them get whisked
[47:52] through security, but the cost could be
[47:55] dropping. The TSA now says it can do
[47:57] those background checks for only $28.
[47:59] The company operating the system now
[48:01] plans to expand to Cincinnati,
[48:03] Indianapolis, San Jose, and the British
[48:05] Airways Terminal at New York's JFK.
[48:08] Well, it's not the Da Vinci Code or
[48:09] Antiques Road Show, but one biology
[48:12] professor has found a way to put a date
[48:14] on when some masterpieces were made. And
[48:16] these dates can solve some mysteries of
[48:18] priceless works of art.
[48:23] There are the work of masters,
[48:27] but when were they created?
[48:30] Biologist Blair Hedges is trying to
[48:32] answer this question. He found out by
[48:34] studying different editions of the same
[48:36] print. He could pinpoint the date of
[48:38] previously updated works. He calls this
[48:40] the print clock method.
[48:41] >> It measures the change in the wood and
[48:44] the metal used to make the prints.
[48:46] >> Early craftsmen used handc cranked
[48:47] printing presses with the letters carved
[48:49] into wooden blocks or copper plates.
[48:52] >> What we have here are two wood block
[48:54] prints and two copper plate prints. To
[48:57] determine the date of old prints made
[48:58] from wood blocks, Hedges scans digital
[49:00] photos into his computer and uses a
[49:03] digital analysis software program to
[49:05] count the number of breaks in the lines.
[49:07] For prints made with copper plates, he
[49:09] looks at the level of fading in the
[49:10] lines. With each edition of the same
[49:12] book or print, the ink appears lighter.
[49:15] Here, the computer program counts the
[49:16] number of pixels from the scanned
[49:18] digital photo.
[49:19] >> This later print, every different
[49:21] edition after the original one will have
[49:24] more and more white pixels. Hedges found
[49:26] the changes in the prints were
[49:28] clock-like because the breaks in the
[49:29] wood and thinning of the copper occurred
[49:31] evenly over time.
[49:33] >> People want to know when things
[49:34] happened. For example, when a piece of
[49:37] art was created, when an idea was
[49:38] thought of, when a discovery was made.
[49:41] >> The print clock method may help
[49:42] historians fill in those blanks. Hillary
[49:45] Hudes, the 10:00 news.
[49:48] >> And print experts often use a printer's
[49:50] watermark on the paper to place a date
[49:52] on previously undated works. Dr. Hedges
[49:54] says the watermark method is not as
[49:56] accurate as the print clock clock method
[49:59] because it dates the paper, not the
[50:01] print.
[50:04] In the Hollywood buzz tonight, Michael
[50:05] Richards may have to give an expensive
[50:07] apology for his racist rant. The two men
[50:10] Richards insulted during his comedy act
[50:12] want a personal apology and maybe even
[50:14] money. Their attorney, Gloria Alred,
[50:16] says Richard should apologize and let a
[50:18] judge decide if Richard should pay. She
[50:20] says the men were ordering drinks when
[50:22] Richard started yelling at them for
[50:23] interrupting his act. When someone in
[50:25] the group said he wasn't funny, Richards
[50:26] repeatedly yelled racist remarks at
[50:28] them. Richard's publicist says the
[50:30] comedian wants to apologize and see what
[50:32] happens from there. Also, according to
[50:33] the Associated Press tonight, Richard
[50:35] plans on appearing on Jesse Jackson's
[50:37] radio show to answer questions as well.
[50:40] And that is Fox 12's final cut for
[50:42] tonight.
[50:45] I'm Matt Smith. Ahead in sports, it's
[50:46] high school football Saturday. A couple
[50:48] local teams putting it all on the line
[50:50] in the state playoffs. Plus, thousands
[50:52] of teddy bears streaming down from the
[50:54] stands. It's the most visual game of the

[53:56] Welcome back. Right on the heels of the
[53:57] Duck Civil War loss tonight, more bad
[53:59] news for the University of Oregon. This
[54:01] time it's athletic director Bill Moose
[54:03] set to resign. This according to the
[54:04] Eugene registered guard with 12 years
[54:06] under his belt. Moose has the second
[54:08] longest tenure of any University of
[54:10] Oregon ad. He's led the university
[54:11] through its most prosperous years
[54:13] athletically. Sources say Moose is
[54:15] resigning for personal reasons depending
[54:17] on who you talk to. A big blow tonight
[54:19] for the Ducks. But for Blazers fans, it
[54:21] was the kind of night you're happy your
[54:23] team was playing in another city because
[54:24] you hate to pay good money and see what
[54:26] we saw tonight in Sacramento. Blazers
[54:28] taking on the Kings. Eay Udoka came out
[54:30] firing for Portland in the first half.
[54:32] Scored 11 points, hitting five of seven
[54:34] shots. Zack Randolph also putting up his
[54:37] numbers, 24 points, eight rebounds for
[54:39] Zebo. But the Kings blew it open in the
[54:42] second quarter. Mike Bby for three.
[54:44] Check out this series right here.
[54:45] Followed by Kevin Martin, three of his
[54:47] 27 points. Then Sharief Abdul Rahheem,
[54:49] the former Blazer, going right down the
[54:51] lane. Blazers down by 22 at halftime and
[54:53] they fall tonight 10585.
[54:56] Well, we're heading down the final
[54:57] stretch in high school football. Today,
[54:59] both Wilsonville and Sherwood hit the
[55:00] field in the 5A quarterfinals. Sunny day
[55:03] in McMinnville where Wilsonville was
[55:05] taking on Dallas at Lynfield College. In
[55:07] the third quarter, Wilsonville led 15-7.
[55:09] This drive set up by a Wildcats
[55:11] interception and Jake Carlson puts it in
[55:13] the end zone. Wilsonville up 22-7. More
[55:16] Wildcats offense. Later in the third,
[55:18] Tyler Reeves to Jesse St. Check out the
[55:19] nice move by Stab. He takes it all the
[55:21] way down to the two yd line. 35 yd
[55:24] pickup that led to the short touchdown
[55:26] plunge here by Jake Carlson. Wildcats
[55:29] extend their lead and that would do it.
[55:30] The final today Wilsonville beating
[55:33] Dallas 2913 at Sherwood High. The Bowman
[55:36] hosting Corvalis in the first half.
[55:39] Sherwood getting the four-yd touchdown
[55:40] run from Travis Loots. That made the
[55:42] score 7-6. Bowman down by one, but
[55:45] Corvalis wastes no time answering back
[55:47] Drew Hubble to Jordan Fred. And Fred is
[55:50] gone. 77 yd touchdown to put Corvales up
[55:53] 14-6 and Corvalis wins big over Sherwood
[55:56] 34-13 in the 2A quarterfinals. Portland
[55:59] Christian hit the road to play Cascade
[56:01] Christian. Portland Christian perfect
[56:03] 11-0 entering this game here in the
[56:05] third quarter. Shawn Evans with the 20
[56:06] yardd touchdown to put the Royals up
[56:08] nine nothing but it was all Cascade
[56:10] after that. Check out Alex Crawford down
[56:12] the far sideline. Shakes two defenders
[56:14] gone. Cascade Christian closing the game
[56:17] with 28 unanswered points to hand
[56:19] Portland Christian its first loss of the
[56:22] year. Doesn't matter if you like sports
[56:24] or not. This is the best hockey night of
[56:26] the year in Portland. The Winterhawks
[56:28] holding their annual teddy bear toss.
[56:29] Fans bringing teddy bears to the game
[56:31] and when the first goal is scored, they
[56:33] throw those Bears on the ice. Well,
[56:34] there were no goals until overtime, but
[56:36] Kyle Bailey comes through, puts it in,
[56:39] and let the Bears fly. Last year they
[56:41] had 10,000 in excess of 10,000 Bears hit
[56:45] the ice. Tonight, another respectable
[56:47] night. The game was so late, no numbers
[56:49] in for Bear totals, but certainly a
[56:51] great night as the Winhawks win an OT
[56:53] and the Bears were flying. Also tonight,
[56:54] USC rolled past Notre Dame 44-24 and
[56:57] Arizona State beat Arizona 2814.

[57:14] tomorrow morning with some snow as well
[57:15] and then slow snow levels after that.
