[0:02] Good evening. I'm Ed Murrow.
[0:05] The name of the program is Person to
[0:06] Person.
[0:07] It's all live. There's no film.
[0:10] Tonight we'll be visiting first with
[0:12] that fine jazz artist Dizzy Gillespie
[0:14] and his wife.
[0:16] And then we'll be dropping in on that
[0:18] most pleasant writer and lecturer Emily
[0:20] Kimbrough.
[0:21] We'll be ready to go in exactly 30
[0:23] seconds.
[0:26] Good evening. I'm Bob Dixon.
[0:28] The name of our sponsor is the American
[0:31] Oil Company.
[0:32] You know, there's only one motor fuel
[0:34] that actually guarantees its performance
[0:37] in your car. Yes, only Amoco Gas
[0:40] guarantees no lead fouling in the
[0:42] engine, 100% power. And that's because
[0:45] Amoco Gas is refined to give your car
[0:48] the highest natural octane it can use
[0:51] without the use of lead.
[0:53] The result, a cleaner, better running
[0:55] engine, more power,
[0:58] more mileage.
[1:00] And now here's Ed Murrow.
[1:04] John, otherwise known as Dizzy
[1:06] Gillespie, has been blowing a horn as
[1:09] long as he can remember. He's 38 years
[1:11] old.
[1:12] He took up the trumpet as a boy in
[1:14] Cheraw, South Carolina and blew his way
[1:16] north to New York, his headquarters for
[1:18] the past 19 years.
[1:20] Dizzy is an outstanding trumpeter, band
[1:22] leader and jazz musician.
[1:24] He is, in addition, one of the
[1:26] originators of that brand of jazz known
[1:28] as bebop.
[1:30] A month ago, Dizzy Gillespie returned
[1:32] from a new assignment, unofficial
[1:34] American ambassador of jazz.
[1:36] He had toured for 2 months a belt of
[1:39] Middle Eastern countries ranging from
[1:41] Pakistan to Yugoslavia.
[1:43] He makes a similar tour to South Africa
[1:45] to South America this fall.
[1:47] Dizzy Gillespie and his wife Lorraine,
