[0:00] mosquitoes. Not just the normal nuisance
[0:01] mosquitoes. These pests are a deadly
[0:04] health threat. Some of them are carrying
[0:06] encphilitis. There's a war on tonight.
[0:09] We get the latest from NBC's Bob Fall.
[0:12] With three deaths from encphilitis
[0:14] confirmed tonight in New York City,
[0:16] there's a new refrain all along the
[0:18] eastern seabboard. Let us spray.
[0:22] Maryland afflicted with 58 varieties of
[0:24] mosquito. spraying up to 50,000 acres of
[0:27] marshling at a cost of almost $2
[0:28] million. In New York City, low-flying
[0:31] helicopters carpet bomb with a pesticide
[0:33] malathione. City health workers go
[0:36] doortodoor distributing information
[0:38] after stockpiling insecticide and
[0:40] applying it liberally themselves.
[0:43] The target, a creature that lives for
[0:45] barely 10 days and is generally
[0:46] considered a nuisance when it lands on
[0:48] humans 10 times a minute. Now,
[0:51] >> now we have populations that are, as far
[0:53] as a landing rate count, anywhere from
[0:56] 50 to 100 per minute.
[0:58] >> A swarm on Maryland's Eastern Shore
[1:00] reporting its worst mosquito problem in
[1:02] 10 years, largely because the drought
[1:05] killed off some mosquito predators like
[1:07] dragon flies. And because all the
[1:09] parched ground gave mosquitoes more room
[1:11] to deposit their eggs, ideal breeding
[1:13] conditions after recent heavy rainfalls.
[1:16] The water level rises, inundates the
[1:18] eggs, the eggs hatch, and they're in an
[1:20] environment which is uh virtually
[1:22] predator-free.
[1:23] >> It's happened not just in Maryland, but
[1:25] in the Midwest. Mosquito eradication
[1:27] efforts stepped up in Peoria and in the
[1:29] Minneapolis area.
