[0:05] The battle for Fallujah is in its early

[0:07] stages tonight and a 60-day state of

[0:09] emergency is in effect across almost all

[0:11] of Iraq. US war plananes are pounding

[0:14] the insurgent stronghold west of

[0:16] Baghdad. And although the main ground

[0:18] assault has yet to begin, American

[0:20] forces have already captured rebel held

[0:22] territory, including the city's main

[0:24] hospital. CBS News producer Kirk Spitzer

[0:26] is embedded with US special forces. He's

[0:29] the first American television journalist

[0:31] inside Fallujah and has exclusive

[0:33] pictures of the hospital capture.

[0:36] >> Iraqi army commanders backed by American

[0:38] Green Berets uh seized the main hospital

[0:41] and blocked a key escape route um late

[0:44] Sunday night in the uh opening hours of

[0:46] the long expected coalition assault on

[0:49] Fallujah. Members of the Iraqi 36th

[0:52] Commando Battalion encountered little

[0:55] resistance and uh detained several

[0:57] suspected Iraqi insurgents. Uh coalition

[1:01] commanders had feared the surgeons would

[1:03] use the hospital um to treat uh injured

[1:07] fighters and to stage attacks on

[1:08] coalition forces in the area. this the

[1:12] uh commando attack which was uh

[1:14] coordinated with US special forces uh

[1:17] was part of the overall um American and

[1:19] coalition assault on Fallujah. The

[1:22] sounds of uh gunfire um and explosions

[1:25] can be heard throughout the city um

[1:27] rather steadily all evening long. Kirk
