[0:05] Washington sees few hopeful signs as
[0:07] clocks tick toward war.
[0:10] In the rainy desert, troops prepare for
[0:12] action. And Gorbachev says he did not
[0:15] order the violence in Lithuania.
[0:20] This is the CBS Evening News, Dan Rather
[0:23] reporting. Good evening. With little
[0:25] more than 24 hours left now before the
[0:27] deadline for Iraq to get out of Kuwait,
[0:29] neither the United States nor Iraq
[0:31] showed any sign today of veering off
[0:33] their collision course to war. One more
[0:35] last hours peace initiative is in the
[0:38] works tonight. This one from France, but
[0:40] both President Bush and Saddam Hussein
[0:42] were insisting that the other must yield
[0:45] to open the way for any possible
[0:47] diplomatic solution. White House
[0:48] correspondent Wyatt Andrews begins our
[0:50] coverage.
[0:56] >> Dan, the White House said flatly today
[0:58] that the United States could expect to
[1:00] go to war at any time and that the
[1:02] president had decided to commit US
[1:05] forces to military action at any time
[1:07] after the January 15th deadline. In
[1:10] fact, spokesman Marlin Fitzwater today
[1:12] said that any moment after January 15th
[1:14] is {quote} {unquote} borrowed time. Here
[1:17] from here is not that the president has
[1:19] lost all sense of hope for a peaceful
[1:21] solution. It's just that there are no
[1:23] hopeful signs.
[1:24] >> The grim White House mood notably
[1:26] worsened today, especially in light of
[1:29] the failure of the UN Secretary
[1:31] General's peace mission to Baghdad.
[1:33] >> You have an expression in English in
[1:34] English you you need two for tango
[1:37] and then I want very much to dance, but
[1:39] I didn't find any
[1:42] nice lady for dancing with.
