[0:09] US gunships struck the positions of a
[0:12] Somali warlord for the third straight
[0:14] night, part of a United Nations reprisal
[0:16] for the killing of 23 Pakistani
[0:18] peacekeepers. Protests against the
[0:20] attacks have also turned deadly. At
[0:22] least 14 demonstrators killed by UN
[0:25] troops today.
[0:26] Bob Simon filed this report tonight from
[0:28] Mogadishu.
[0:31] >> Just after 2:00 in the morning Mogadishu
[0:33] time, the fireworks started again.
[0:35] AC-130 gunships pounding the same area
[0:37] that they pounded last night, which is
[0:39] the area in Mogadishu controlled by
[0:41] General Aideed.
[0:43] Sunday the 13th began with bloodshed.
[0:46] Hundreds of Somalis took to the streets
[0:48] this morning to protest the latest
[0:50] American bombing of their city. When
[0:52] they approached a sandbagged and
[0:54] barricaded United Nations position,
[0:56] Pakistani troops opened fire.
[0:59] Just a few blocks away, the target of
[1:01] the pre-dawn US airstrike was still on
[1:03] fire. Local residents claimed they
[1:06] didn't understand what the Americans
[1:08] were up to.
[1:09] >> These buildings here
[1:10] >> The Americans explained.
[1:11] >> This however is not your ordinary
[1:13] garage. This is an unauthorized weapon
[1:16] storage site.
[1:19] >> The Americans claimed the number of
[1:20] secondary explosions during the attack
[1:23] proved their point. They had bombed a
[1:24] center for the assembly and servicing of
[1:27] armed vehicles. But people in Mogadishu
[1:29] were not persuaded. The Somalis who
[1:32] greeted US Marines as saviors 6 months
[1:34] ago were now shouting, "Down, down with
[1:38] Clinton."
