[0:03] Attack on America.
[0:06] Dan Rather reporting from CBS News world
[0:08] headquarters in New York with Ed
[0:10] Bradley.
[0:11] It is 1:30 p.m. in the Eastern time
[0:13] zone. Headline of this hour, a surge of
[0:16] hope in New York's disaster zone after a
[0:18] miracle of survival. Firefighters at the
[0:20] World Trade Center site pulled at least
[0:22] two and possibly more of their own from
[0:25] the rubble today alive.
[0:28] At least one of the firefighters walked
[0:30] away.
[0:31] Bent but straight up and proud.
[0:34] But New York City Mayor Giuliani says
[0:36] 4,763
[0:38] people are unaccounted for with 94 now
[0:42] confirmed dead. At the Pentagon, the
[0:43] Defense Department now estimates 126
[0:47] people were killed, nearly all of them
[0:49] Army or Navy personnel or civilian
[0:51] employees. Those death figures do not
[0:53] include the 266 people or more on the
[0:57] four hijacked jet liners used in the
[0:59] attacks.
[1:00] The final death toll may be above 5,000.
[1:04] Attorney General Ashcroft revised the
[1:06] estimated number of the hijackers
[1:08] to 18. He says 18 foul people got aboard
[1:12] those planes to make them suicide bombs.
[1:15] There were five hijackers each on two of
[1:17] the planes, two hijackers on the other
[1:19] two aircraft. Also today it's reported
[1:22] that the plane that hit the Pentagon may
[1:24] have first circled the US Capitol before
[1:27] bearing south toward the Pentagon. One
[1:29] Congressman says they were briefed and
[1:30] told that's what had happened. Now those
[1:33] are among the developments of the hour.
[1:36] Ed Bradley
[1:37] uh it's going to be at least a month,
[1:39] probably two months before we have a
[1:41] final death toll because it's going so
[1:44] slowly in lower Manhattan
