[0:00] Everybody. Thanks for being here today.

[0:01] See you tomorrow at 5:00. Here's CBS.

[0:06] >> This is the CBS Evening News, Dan Rather

[0:09] reporting. Good evening. A caller

[0:11] claiming to represent something called

[0:13] the Islamic Revolutionary Brigades today

[0:15] claimed responsibility for kidnapping a

[0:17] US Marine officer in southern Lebanon. A

[0:20] Lebanese militia leader said it appears

[0:22] to be the same pro-Iranian group that's

[0:24] holding eight other American hostages in

[0:26] Beirut. In Washington, President Reagan

[0:29] spoke publicly about wanting to quote

[0:31] rescue Lieutenant Colonel William

[0:32] Higgins, but aides quickly backed off of

[0:34] that issuing what they called a

[0:36] qualification saying that the president

[0:38] was not talking about any military

[0:39] rescue.

[0:41] From the White House, Terrance Smith

[0:42] begins our report.

[0:47] congressmen at a morning meeting on the

[0:48] new budget when he seemed to suggest

[0:50] that the United States was considering

[0:52] direct action to get Colonel Higgins

[0:55] back.

[0:55] >> We're doing everything we can. We're

[0:57] trying to find out as much as we can and

[1:00] and we'll try to get him located and

[1:02] certainly we want to

[1:03] we want to rescue him.

[1:05] >> But administration spokesman hastened to

[1:06] explain that despite the president's

[1:08] remark, no special forces operation is

[1:11] being considered.

[1:12] >> I think the president was making a

[1:13] reference there to

[1:15] all of our efforts to stay in touch with

[1:17] all the parties in the region

[1:19] with the United Nations to explore every

[1:21] possibility

[1:23] to see if Colonel Higgins can't be

[1:25] safely returned.
