[2:24] >> A US security contractor was the target

[2:26] of a powerful and deadly car bombing in

[2:28] Afghanistan today. The blast in Kbble

[2:31] killed at least seven people, including

[2:33] Americans. CBS's Larara Logan has the

[2:36] latest.

[2:37] >> The bomber struck in the heart of

[2:39] downtown Carbal just before dark. The

[2:42] target, a building housing employees of

[2:44] an American security firm, Dinore, that

[2:47] went up in flames. At least two

[2:49] Americans were among the dead. A Taliban

[2:52] spokesman quickly claimed responsibility

[2:54] for the remote control blast that tore

[2:56] through walls and shattered windows. The

[3:00] injured poured into a nearby hospital

[3:02] where this man was among the victims

[3:04] being treated.

[3:06] He called those responsible enemies of

[3:08] the Afghan people. see what they have

[3:10] done, he said. Among the dead were an

[3:13] Afghan child and Nepalese guards in

[3:16] addition to the American government

[3:18] contract workers. This attack comes the

[3:20] day after an explosion at a school in

[3:23] eastern Afghanistan that killed nine

[3:25] children and one adult. Afghan and

[3:28] American officials say the violence is

[3:31] aimed at stopping Afghanistan's first

[3:33] democratic election, which is just weeks

[3:36] away. But over 90% of Afghans have

[3:39] registered to vote, undeterred by

[3:42] violence that has killed close to a

[3:44] thousand people here in the past year.

[3:46] Lara Logan, CBS News, Afghanistan.

[4:00] people and flooded the region with more

[4:02] than 8 in of rain. And Frances is now a

[4:05] category four on a five-scale hurricane.

[4:08] It could pose a dangerous threat to the

[4:10] US mainland over the Labor Day weekend.

[4:52] her benadryil allergy. His Algro 180

[4:55] still working. It lasts four times

[4:57] longer. One dose of most seasonal

[7:02] What takes place here in New York City

[7:04] has a profound effect on the entire

[7:05] nation. For better or some would say for

[7:07] worse. Few cities in the world invoke

[7:10] the same degree of both love and

[7:12] loathing. That's tonight's weekend

[7:14] journal. New Yorkers unconventional

[7:17] relationship with each other and the

[7:19] nation.

[7:25] >> Everything happens here before it

[7:28] happens any place else.

[7:31] >> Life in New York has always moved to a

[7:33] different rhythm.

[7:34] >> When you walk down the street, you feel

[7:38] like anything can happen.

[7:40] >> We bring out strong emotions. There's no

[7:42] question about it. and no apology.

[7:46] Unlike Boston, sight of that other

[7:48] convention, New York never intended to

[7:51] be a shining city on the hill. New

[7:53] York's reason for being is capitalism.

[7:57] It is about making money.

[7:59] >> So, it doesn't have the high and mighty

[8:01] and noble aura of much of our founding

[8:04] fathers mythologies.

[8:06] >> The reality is a freewheeling

[8:08] marketplace where life and business is a

[8:10] ruthless competition. Only the strong

[8:13] and best survive. Hip hop pioneer

[8:16] Russell Simmons.

[8:17] >> You know, there's a factor of honesty

[8:18] and integrity, I think, that comes out

[8:20] of New York and truthfulness that really

[8:22] affects the world in a very profound

[8:24] way.

[8:25] >> Immigrants provide the energy for New

[8:27] York's power. Irving Berlin and John

[8:29] Linen were among the millions who've

[8:31] come and conquered. The city's promise

[8:34] also draws Americans yearning for

[8:36] something more. Be they Louis Armstrong

[8:38] or Madonna. New York has been a magnet

[8:42] for mavericks, leaders, misfits,

[8:45] geniuses, and other people who really

[8:49] stick out in other parts of the country.

[8:52] >> In a town with four daily newspapers and

[8:54] a halfozen TV stations, personal dramas

[8:57] like the divorce of a mayor or mogul are

[9:00] all played out in public. But sheer

[9:03] numbers allow the famous, from Jackie

[9:05] Onassis to Greta Garbo, to hide in plain

[9:08] sight. New York City is a place that

[9:10] really values excellence.

[9:13] >> The relentless drive for success comes

[9:15] with more than a fair share of moral

[9:17] ambiguity. Excess abounds and that

[9:20] drives many people around the country

[9:22] crazy. Former mayor Ed Cotch,

[9:25] >> I remember when Goldwater ran for

[9:27] president in 1964. He said, "Why don't

[9:30] you saw off the eastern seabboard, he

[9:33] really meant New York City, and ship it

[9:35] back to Europe?"

[9:37] Despite such disdain, cultural movements

[9:40] routinely sprout from the city's

[9:41] sidewalks. From the Harlem Renaissance

[9:46] >> to rap, the city's music, art, and

[9:49] fashion stitch themselves into the

[9:51] fabric of our society. Why do rich kids

[9:53] in Beverly Hills love to hear the songs

[9:57] of kids in Harlem who
