[0:02] taking off from Washington in a
[0:03] snowstorm hits a bridge and plunges into
[0:06] the Ptoic River. Tonight, a full report
[0:13] from ABC. This is World News Tonight
[0:16] with Peter Jennings at the foreign desk
[0:18] in London, Max Robinson at the National
[0:21] Desk in Chicago, and from our desk in
[0:23] Washington, Frank Reynolds.
[0:25] >> Good evening. It was an Air Florida
[0:27] jetliner flight 90 bound for Tampa. 68
[0:30] passengers and five crew members on
[0:32] board. Moments after takeoff from
[0:34] Washington's National Airport. It struck
[0:36] a bridge crowded with commuter cars and
[0:38] plunged into the Ptoic River. At this
[0:40] point, we know there are at least 16
[0:42] survivors, maybe more. We have a late
[0:44] report from Mike von friend. The height
[0:47] of rush hour in a severe snowstorm. An
[0:50] Air Florida Boeing 737 flight 90 taking
[0:53] off from Washington National Airport for
[0:55] Tampa. In the severe weather, something
[0:57] goes wrong and the jet shears off the
[0:59] tops of cars and trucks on Washington's
[1:01] 14th Street Bridge. The jet carrying a
[1:04] near full load crashes into the Ptoac
[1:06] River and through a gaping hole in the
[1:08] ice. Only debris can be seen.
[1:10] Helicopters circle desperately searching
[1:13] for survivors, lowering ropes and
[1:15] dragging survivors in the freezing snow
[1:17] where rescue crews wait on the banks of
[1:19] the PTOAC, standing by to take survivors
[1:22] to the nearest hospital.
[1:24] Some of the rescue attempts were heroic.
[1:27] This woman dragging along the ice almost
[1:29] to safety, but her arms give out. She
[1:31] can do nothing but wave for help in the
[1:33] freezing water.
