[0:30] >> Good evening. Three happy Apollo 7
[0:32] astronauts are resting aboard the
[0:34] carrier Essex tonight after splashing
[0:37] down in the Atlantic this morning to end
[0:39] their 11-day space flight. Space
[0:41] officials call it the perfect mission,
[0:43] 101% successful. ABC science editor
[0:47] Jules Bergman has the Apollo report.
[0:55] It was just after 7:00 a.m. this morning
[0:57] when Apollo 7 splashed down in the
[0:59] Atlantic, only 6 milesi from the
[1:01] aircraft carrier Essex. But fog and rain
[1:03] prevented anyone from seeing the
[1:05] landing. And since the spacecraft tipped
[1:07] over initially, blocking out its radio
[1:09] antenna, no one was sure where it was.
[1:11] Not until a helicopter's door opened at
[1:13] the nation se Wally Sherrod, Don Eley,
[1:15] and Walt Cunningham.
[1:16] >> All in good shape. 4 and a half million
[1:18] miles in space, 163 orbits. the world's
[1:21] longest space trip and total manhour had
[1:24] left them unharmed. And despite fears of
[1:26] ruptured eardrums because of their
[1:28] colds, they suffered no ear damage or
[1:30] pain during the re-entry. A quick
[1:32] medical exam aboard the Essex confirmed
[1:34] that. After shaves and showers, they
[1:37] breakfasted on staken eggs.
