[0:00] Tonight, flood waters show no mercy.

[0:04] The remnants of Irene leave entire towns

[0:06] stranded. Homeowners see everything they

[0:09] had washed away.

[0:11] You can sit down and cry about it, or

[0:12] you can just, you know, hold your chin

[0:14] up and move forward.

[0:16] Top-ranking law enforcement officials

[0:18] resign after a botched sting operation

[0:21] exposed by CBS News correspondent Sharyl

[0:25] Attkisson.

[0:26] Home prices are falling, so why is no

[0:29] one buying? Chip Reid got some answers.

[0:32] And Bob Orr has turned up pictures that

[0:36] few have ever seen. Images of the

[0:39] desperate search for survivors in the

[0:41] days after 9/11.

[0:45] want to take a look.

[0:51] This is the CBS Evening News with Scott

[0:55] Good evening. Imagine waking up to find

[0:58] yourself stranded on an island with no

[1:00] way off. That is, in effect, what's

[1:05] brought by Irene have left 13 towns cut

[1:09] off from the rest of the world, and

[1:11] their water treatment plants have

[1:13] failed. 13 towns where people have no

[1:16] water and no escape. Elsewhere in the

[1:19] storm zone, 2.8 million homes and

[1:22] businesses in 13 states and the District

[1:25] of Columbia still have no electricity.

[1:28] The death toll so far this evening is

[1:30] 44. And have a look at this. This is

[1:34] Paterson, New Jersey.

[1:39] Paterson is a city of 146,000

[1:42] west of New York. Nearly a thousand

[1:45] people were rescued there today by

[1:47] watercraft as the Passaic River keeps on

[1:50] rising. It's not expected to crest until

[1:52] this evening. We have two reports

[1:54] tonight, beginning with Wyatt Andrews in

[1:57] Brattlebor
