[0:15] war are released. Chaos spreads in
[0:17] southern Iraq as Saddam Hussein fights
[0:19] to regain control. And charges of police
[0:22] brutality in Los Angeles.
[0:26] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather
[0:29] reporting. Good evening. Complying with
[0:32] the UN resolution, Iraq today officially
[0:34] canled its annexation of Kuwait. The
[0:36] Iraqis also freed more prisoners of war.
[0:39] All of them, they say, but the Americans
[0:41] and others are stuck in Baghdad tonight.
[0:43] Betsy Erin is there.
[0:46] >> Baghdad was battered by gale force winds
[0:49] all day. The weather causing a delay in
[0:52] the prisoner exchange. This morning, the
[0:54] Iraqis turned over 35 prisoners of war
[0:57] to the Red Cross. 15 Americans, an
[1:00] Italian, nine Britons, nine Saudis, and
[1:03] one Kuwaiti.
[1:04] >> They look all very happy uh to me. Uh
[1:08] but as I said yesterday, I don't want to
[1:10] go into any medical aspects.
[1:13] >> The 10 PS who were freed yesterday were
[1:16] all able to walk into the hotel. Today,
[1:20] there were no photographs allowed of
[1:21] this second group to be freed.
[1:24] According to the Iraqis, the 35 freed
[1:27] today plus the 10 yesterday are all the
[1:30] allied PS who were captured.
[1:32] >> I don't want to uh make any statements.
[1:35] Is it really all or maybe is there maybe
[1:38] one or or two left? I don't know. Uh
[1:41] what we know is that yes there is this
[1:46] gesture and that there is this will to
[1:48] implement rapidly this repatriation
[1:52] process.
