[0:06] worth talking about. Give from the

[0:15] In Somalia, people who need food, will
[0:17] American troops get it to them?
[0:20] In Germany, an outcry against violence
[0:22] and Nazis.
[0:27] This is NBC Nightly News, reported by
[0:30] Garrick Utley.
[0:32] Good evening. We begin with food. People
[0:35] who don't have it and can't get it and
[0:37] therefore face famine because of war and
[0:40] tribal feuds. First, let's look at
[0:42] Somalia. President Bush, as we know, is
[0:43] ready to send American forces there and
[0:46] now both leaders of the warring factions
[0:48] in that country say that's just fine
[0:50] with them. The American troops, with
[0:52] United Nations backing, would guarantee
[0:54] the safe delivery of food to those who
[0:56] are dying of hunger. Jim Miklaszewski is
[0:58] with the president tonight in Kennebunk
[1:00] Port. Jim.

[1:03] to use force in Somalia is now up to the
[1:06] UN and there's still a lot of work to do
[1:08] before that happens.
[1:11] From his home at Walker's Point,
[1:12] President Bush has been on the phone to
[1:14] other world leaders. He's trying to
[1:16] build the same kind of international
[1:18] coalition for the use of force in
[1:20] Somalia as he did for Desert Storm.
[1:23] After briefing Bush this morning,
[1:25] National Security Advisor Brent
[1:26] Scowcroft said consultations also
[1:29] continue at the UN. We're talking. It's
[1:31] a difficult situation. We're trying to
[1:33] see what we can do to help. Meanwhile,
[1:35] acting Secretary of State Lawrence
[1:36] Eagleburger pledged that any military
[1:39] mission would not be open-ended and
[1:41] would have a deadline for withdrawal of
[1:43] US
