[0:01] Evening.
[0:04] >> This is the CBS Evening News with Walter
[0:07] Kankite.
[0:08] >> Good evening. The focus of campaign 80
[0:11] shifted today to the next testing
[0:12] ground, New England, after the Iowa
[0:15] caucuses got the battle for the
[0:16] presidency off to a stunning start. The
[0:19] caucuses attended by a record 200,000
[0:21] voters, more than voted in the 76 New
[0:24] Hampshire primary, knocked out no
[0:26] candidate, but left several reeling.
[0:28] President Carter jolted Senator Kennedy
[0:30] with a 2 to1 drubbing. The almost
[0:32] complete count of the caucus division
[0:34] showed 59% for Carter, 31% for Kennedy,

[1:00] 10% and then Philip Crane, John
[1:02] Anderson, and Bob Dole. We should point
[1:05] out that both the Democratic and
[1:06] Republican tallies indicate, but do not
[1:08] precisely measure how Iowa's national
[1:11] convention delegates will be aortioned
[1:13] later. Roger Mud has more on the
[1:15] caucuses.
[1:18] What the Kennedys hoped for was a nice
[1:20] turnout of 40 to 60,000 to keep down the
[1:23] my president right or wrong vote.
[1:26] >> 73 Congress. We need another 100.
[1:29] >> But what they got was a smothering
[1:31] avalanche of votes. A turnout of about
[1:34] 100,000 that demonstrated again the
[1:36] difficulties of defeating a president
[1:38] who is under attack from foreigners. But
[1:41] this was also the first time Kennedy had
