[0:05] Kofji Saudi Arabia after the war's first

[0:08] sharp clash of armor. Iraqi units on the

[0:11] move pounded from the air. And at home,

[0:20] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather

[0:22] reporting tonight with a special war

[0:24] update edition. Good evening. US and

[0:27] allied commanders said today that three

[0:29] days of hot combat with Iraqi troops

[0:31] near the Kuwaiti border produced, and I

[0:34] quote, "a military disaster for Iraq."

[0:37] They say an Iraqi force that seized the

[0:39] Saudi town of Kafi was all but wiped

[1:15] bordered town, littered with destroyed

[1:17] vehicles from both sides, provided

[1:20] evidence it had been a bigger battle

[1:21] than US commanders had first

[1:23] acknowledged.

[1:26] >> Jubilant Saudi soldiers, surprised and

[1:28] confused in the early fighting, won

[1:30] praise from US officers for their final

[1:33] assault. US and Saudi commanders

[1:36] ridiculed Iraqi tactics.

[1:38] >> I think they were pushed for this. It's

[1:40] like it's it's it's a suicide mission

[1:42] for them. The Iraqis, who were still

[1:44] sniping at the Allied troops at midda
