[0:03] The widening offensive in the Middle

[0:05] East this morning. New Israeli attacks

[0:07] on Beirut. And in retaliation, more

[0:10] rockets launched against Israel,

[0:12] including some that hit the city of

[0:14] Hifa. CBS News correspondent Richard

[0:16] Roth is right on the Israeli Lebanese

[0:18] border. He's got the latest. Good

[0:19] morning, Richard.

[0:22] >> Good morning, Harry. We're about a mile

[0:23] from the uh northern border of Israel

[0:26] and at an army post where all morning uh

[0:29] Israel's been firing artillery into

[0:31] southern Lebanon. The two sides have

[0:33] been exchanging warnings all day today,

[0:35] too. In Beirut, Hezbollah has warned

[0:38] that it will attack Hifa, Israel's third

[0:40] largest city. And Israel's warned that

[0:43] it will intensify its operation in

[0:45] Lebanon. And it's been doing just that.

[0:49] Air attacks at daybreak targeted the

[0:51] southern suburbs of Beirut. Israeli jets

[0:54] hit a fuel storage depot at an electric

[0:56] power plant. And after dropping leaflets

[0:59] warning civilians to evacuate, Israel

[1:01] rocketed the neighborhood where

[1:03] Hezbollah makes its headquarters.

[1:06] Hit again today, Beirut's airport is out

[1:09] of business with aviation fuel on fire

[1:12] and runways in ruin. Israel has been

[1:15] choking off transport in and out of

[1:17] Lebanon. Bombs hit the highway, linking

[1:19] Beirut with the Syrian capital,

[1:21] Damascus. Travels only possible now

[1:24] along tortuous mountain detours. Israel

[1:27] wants its captured soldiers back, but it

[1:30] also wants to teach a lesson to

[1:32] Hezbollah and the Lebanese. But they

[1:34] have to understand that as long as our

[1:38] citizens are not going to live

[1:41] peacefully near the borders, nobody is

[1:45] going to live peacefully in Lebanon.

[1:48] >> Along Israel's northern border, 200,000

[1:51] people now are living in bomb shelters.

[1:53] Almost 200 Hezbollah rockets have fallen

[1:56] here in the past 2 days. And Israelis

[1:58] stocking up don't expect this will end

[2:01] soon. And it's not just in the north. In

[2:04] Gaza, where the latest round of violence

[2:06] began, Hamas militants this morning were

[2:08] showing off their rockets and still

[2:11] targeting southern Israel.

[2:14] >> In the town of St. There's no peaceful

[2:16] living either.

[2:19] >> Hamas today has called on Hezbollah to

[2:22] work together with Hezbollah to try to

[2:24] arrange an exchange of the captured

[2:26] soldiers for prisoners held by Israel.

[2:29] But there's no sign at all this morning

[2:30] that Israel is even considering any deal

[2:33] making right now. Harry

[2:35] >> Richard Roth live on the border there

[2:37] with Lebanon. Thank you so much.
