[0:20] This is a CBS News special report.

[0:22] Showdown in the Gulf. Reporting from New

[0:25] York, Dan Rather.

[0:31] No decision that any president has to

[0:34] make is of greater consequence than the

[0:36] decision to go to war. President Bush

[0:39] has made it in regards to Iraq's

[0:42] invasion, occupation, and rape of

[0:45] Kuwait. And at this hour, the full force

[0:49] of United States air power, in so far as

[0:53] we can determine, is being directed at

[0:55] Iraq and at Iraqi forces in Kuwait with

[0:58] the goal to drive Iraqi forces out of

[1:00] Kuwait. They entered on August 2nd and

[1:39] began an attack on military targets in

[1:42] Iraq and Kuwait. These attacks continue

[1:45] as I speak. Ground forces are not

[1:48] engaged. This conflict started August

[1:52] 2nd when the dictator of Iraq invaded a

[1:55] small and helpless neighbor. Kuwait, a

[1:59] member of the Arab League and a member

[2:01] of the United Nations was crushed, its

[2:04] people brutalized.

[2:06] Five months ago, Saddam Hussein started

[2:08] this cruel war against Kuwait. Tonight,

[2:12] the battle has been joined. This

[2:15] military action taken in accord with
