[0:04] This is the CBS [music] Evening News
[0:08] with Dan Rather and [music] Connie Chum.
[0:12] >> Good evening. A rebellious war that
[0:15] Boris Yelson hoped would be over by the
[0:17] new year is turning into a death trap
[0:19] for Russian soldiers and a nightmare for
[0:21] the Kremlin. Muslim rebels are pouring
[0:24] into the battered capital of the
[0:26] Chetchin Republic to fight and die for
[0:28] what they consider to be their homeland,
[0:30] what Yelson insists is part of Russia.

[1:08] claims it had the situation under
[1:10] control. A visiting member of the
[1:12] Russian parliament had this to say about
[1:15] that. The lie is uh obviously
[1:21] >> suddenly tonight the Russian tune has
[1:23] changed. Now the official line talks of
[1:26] a need to regroup which sounds a lot
[1:28] like retreat.
[1:32] With their backs literally to the wall,
[1:34] the Chetchins are fighting fiercely and
[1:37] taking few prisoners. Some of the
[1:39] luckier Russian PS were put on display.
[1:42] Others, according to reports, have been
[1:44] grabbed and executed on the spot.
[1:49] >> Amid the chaos, casualty f
