[0:05] >> This is CNN.
[0:10] >> In Florida, a storm named Andrew has
[0:13] rearranged or wiped away lifetimes of
[0:16] work and savings. And as thousands of
[0:19] people began the overwhelming task of
[0:21] cleaning up, thousands more along the
[0:23] Gulf Coast prepare for the worst and
[0:25] wonder, are we next?
[0:32] This is CNN's Prime News with Bernard
[0:35] Shaw in Washington and Cheryl Atkinson
[0:37] sitting in for Susan Rook at the CNN
[0:40] Center in Atlanta.
[0:47] Thanks for joining us. Along a wide
[0:49] swath of southern Florida, this is the
[0:51] beginning of a night without light and
[0:52] power, a night without clean water. For
[0:55] many, a night without a home. As this
[0:57] day began, Hurricane Andrew crashed into
[0:59] the South Florida coast.
[1:06] Sustained winds were 140 mph. One wind
[1:10] gust was measured at 164 mph. In the
[1:14] storm's wake, at least eight people are
[1:15] dead. The damage is estimated to be in
[1:18] the billions of dollars. Three counties
[1:20] have been declared disaster areas. The
[1:23] pictures of buildings splintered and
[1:25] cracked open by the storm convey more
[1:27] than words can ever tell.
[1:32] But the story of Hurricane Andrew is far
[1:34] from over. In cities and towns along the
[1:37] coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi,
[1:39] people are buying supplies or trying to
[1:42] get away. The hurricane is gaining
[1:44] strength and spinning westward in the
[1:45] Gulf of Mexico.
[1:48] Now, let's get an update on Hurricane
[1:50] Andrew's path and strength from CNN's
[1:52] Karen McInness.
[1:53] >> Thank you, Bernie. And yes, this storm
[1:55] is definitely not over. We have a
[1:57] graphic to show you where we anticipate
[1:58] the probable
