[0:03] Tonight, the original idols go

[0:04] head-to-head. Why Justin and Kelly are

[0:07] now locked in a fierce [music] battle

[0:08] over the next Twilight movie.

[0:11] >> How many times a day do you update your

[0:13] Facebook status?

[0:14] >> It's pretty scary. I mean, your

[0:16] information is just kind of for anyone's

[0:18] taking.

[0:19] >> Tonight, the Fox 12 investigators show

[0:20] you how easy it is for a complete

[0:22] stranger to track you down.

[0:25] A local couple says they got hosed when

[0:28] trying to buy new furniture.

[0:29] >> I never would have thought we'd have

[0:30] been waiting 7 months.

[0:31] >> Why their living room tonight still sits

[0:34] empty. A local woman struggles to call

[0:37] 911 after she was attacked by a horse.

[0:40] How rescuers managed to find her when

[0:42] her cell phone died. But first, local

[0:45] homeowners living in raw sewage and

[0:48] they're not happy about it. I was

[0:50] devastated in the beginning, but uh I

[0:53] have to go on.

[0:54] >> While they're having a tough time

[0:55] figuring out what caused this [music]

[0:57] disgusting mess, the story is only on 12

[1:00] and first on Fox

[1:03] >> live from Fox 12 Oregon. This is

[1:05] breaking news.

[1:06] >> Good evening. We are going to begin with

[1:08] some breaking news tonight.

[1:09] >> Right now, police are looking for the

[1:10] person who stabbed a man in downtown

[1:12] Portland tonight. The investigation is

[1:13] happening in the Oldtown area near First

[1:15] and Burnside. KPTV's Mark Hanan is live

[1:18] on the scene with the details. Mark.

[1:19] >> Well, Shauna, police say this one all

[1:21] happened out here on the sidewalk in

[1:22] front of the rescue mission, they say it

[1:23] appears to be a fight between two

[1:25] transients. And while they aren't sure

[1:26] exactly yet what type of weapon was

[1:28] used, they say that victim did end up

[1:30] with a cut. Police are releasing few

[1:33] details about what happened tonight, but

[1:34] they say the victim was taken to the

[1:36] hospital with non-life-threatening

[1:38] injuries and the suspect remains on the

[1:40] loose. Investigators are not sure

[1:42] exactly how the victim was cut. They say

[1:44] it's possible the suspect was wearing a

[1:46] ring and that's what cut the victim. As

[1:48] far as his injuries, witnesses we talked

[1:50] to say he appeared to have a gash on the

[1:53] left part of his face under his ear.

[1:55] They say while he was bleeding a lot, he

[1:57] appeared to be coherent. He was sitting

[2:00] he seemed to be pretty calm. I mean, he

[2:02] had his hand over his face, so I

[2:03] couldn't actually see the wound, but it

[2:04] looked like a pretty sizable gash cuz he

[2:06] could could just kind of see the blood

[2:07] coming out the bottom. Now, police have

[2:10] not released a suspect description

[2:11] tonight. In the meantime, if you know

[2:13] anything about this one that could help,

[2:14] please contact Portland police.

[2:16] Reporting live tonight near downtown

[2:17] Portland, I'm Mark Hanrahan, the 10

[2:19] o'clock news.

[2:20] >> Stay with Fox 12 for continuing coverage

[2:22] of this stabbing investigation. We will

[2:24] have more on the story tonight on the

[2:25] 11:00 news.

[2:27] >> Only on 12 tonight, people in one North

[2:29] Portland neighborhood are dealing with a

[2:30] big mess after a sewage problem that

[2:32] they say is the city's fault. It all

[2:34] started back on Saturday at several

[2:36] homes on North Russet Street in North

[2:38] Portland. KPTV's Andrew Pulla is live in

[2:40] North Portland now with more on the

[2:41] story you'll see only on 12. Andrew.

[2:43] Well, Wayne, many homeowners have spent

[2:45] the last couple of days cleaning up

[2:46] after that big mess. Take a look at

[2:48] what's come out of one home. Here you

[2:49] can see an old chair, bags full of old

[2:51] carpet. Everything ruined after sewage

[2:54] filled their basement.

[2:57] Tonight, work crews with Surf Plus

[2:59] continue to pull bag after bag of trash

[3:02] out of one basement.

[3:03] >> Yeah, it is. It came out of a out of the

[3:07] drain and then I saw the shower was

[3:10] filled with black stuff. Helga Gwell

[3:13] says she noticed the sewage in her

[3:14] basement yesterday. Today, she had

[3:16] workers trying to clean up the mess.

[3:18] >> I have to take care of it. Uh, as sooner

[3:20] the better because of the germs are

[3:22] growing.

[3:23] >> All five rooms in Helga's basement were

[3:25] covered in sewage. Some rooms had up to

[3:27] 3 in of it. Two houses down, the same

[3:31] thing.

[3:31] >> It was all thick and black. It was

[3:33] coming out of the basement, the drains,

[3:35] the tub, the shower. Uh, it filled up my

[3:37] washing machine.

[3:38] >> Karen says it happened Saturday

[3:40] afternoon at her home. Her son took

[3:42] pictures of the mess. Almost every room

[3:44] in her basement was covered in sewage.

[3:47] >> About 5 in all over the basement floor.

[3:49] Anything that's on the floor has to be

[3:51] thrown away.

[3:52] >> Karen says she had her plumber check

[3:54] things out but found no problems on her

[3:56] end.

[3:56] >> And uh then I called the city

[3:58] maintenance to come out and uh they did

[4:03] and [clears throat] they checked and

[4:04] they saw there was a problem.

[4:05] >> She says the city workers told her

[4:07] plumber they found a break in the sewer

[4:09] line. It's a nightmare, but I was really

[4:11] surprised when I found out uh on Monday

[4:14] that it's almost all the houses on my

[4:18] street that have basements.

[4:19] >> Now, everyone on this block is hoping

[4:20] the city will pay for the damages.

[4:23] >> If the city doesn't own up to it, then I

[4:25] get really angry. I will fight for it.

[4:28] >> And we did contact the Bureau of

[4:30] Environmental Services, which is what

[4:32] we're told that deals with the sewer

[4:33] lines. Uh we did not get a call back

[4:35] tonight. In the meantime, homeowners

[4:36] here though are spending thousands of

[4:38] dollars to clean up that mess. They're

[4:40] hoping the city will step up and help

[4:41] them out. Reporting live from North

[4:43] Portland tonight, Andrew Padulla, the

[4:44] 10:00 news. Well, authorities say

[4:46] they've caught a man involved in a major

[4:47] fraud scam. Deputies arrested Elijah

[4:50] Morse on charges including forgery and

[4:52] theft. Now, he's accused of using a fake

[4:54] Oregon driver's license and counterfeit

[4:55] checks to rip off building supply

[4:58] companies. His alleged illegal purchases

[5:00] were as high as 5,000 bucks. Overall

[5:03] losses are estimated at $20,000.

[5:05] Authorities have not said exactly how

[5:07] many victims are involved.

[5:09] >> An incredible story of teamwork and

[5:11] survival tonight. It involves a

[5:13] Clackamus County deputy and 911

[5:15] dispatchers who work together to find a

[5:17] woman who'd been trampled by a horse. It

[5:20] happened near Sherwood this morning, but

[5:22] no one knew where to go after the 911

[5:24] call came in because of poor cell

[5:26] service. However, good teamwork paid off

[5:28] and now the woman is recovering in

[5:30] Emanuel Hospital. KPTV Chad Carter joins

[5:32] us live from there with more on this

[5:33] incredible story. Chad?

[5:35] >> Yeah, and Shauna. Doctors say the woman

[5:37] we only know as Amy is being treated

[5:39] here tonight, but it was her cell phone

[5:40] or more likely her voicemail greeting

[5:43] that ultimately saved her life.

[5:46] >> Your call has been forwarded to an

[5:47] automated voice message system with my

[5:51] phone

[5:52] is not available. That is what we went

[5:56] on to try and find the address.

[5:58] >> And find her they did through an

[6:00] unbelievable string of communication,

[6:02] technology, and luck. It was the

[6:04] voicemail recording that gave the

[6:06] biggest clue dispatchers needed to trace

[6:08] where the call came from.

[6:11] >> The ordeal started this morning about

[6:13] 9:00 a.m. when Amy made the 911 call

[6:16] that was picked up by Woodburn

[6:17] dispatchers. Only a few words made it

[6:20] through, though, as the call was filled

[6:21] with static and hard to understand.

[6:24] Noticing though it was coming from

[6:25] Clakamus County, dispatchers in Woodburn

[6:27] transferred the limited information they

[6:29] had to them.

[6:30] >> She sounded like she'd been injured or

[6:32] something when I got her on the phone,

[6:33] but she couldn't hear me.

[6:34] >> And that's when the puzzle began.

[6:36] >> So, we knew someone needed help. We just

[6:38] didn't know where she was at.

[6:39] >> With three dispatchers working to save

[6:41] her life, they stumbled across what

[6:43] turned out to be a private home with a

[6:45] last name that appeared to match. We

[6:48] went back to the name on the voicemail,

[6:50] the Stramer Farm and Equestrian, and

[6:53] that is what ultimately was the final

[6:58] guiding light.

[6:59] >> It just so happened right then, Deputy

[7:01] John Zabendon was pulling a U-turn in

[7:04] their driveway and was able to track her

[7:06] down. I went and checked uh a large barn

[7:08] that contained a horse stable uh at the

[7:11] back of the house and I found her uh on

[7:14] the ground at the rear of the barn uh

[7:17] with a bloody head.

[7:18] >> She told him she had tried to free the

[7:20] horse's stuck foot when it kicked her,

[7:22] knocking her to the ground where she

[7:24] stayed for almost 2 hours before being

[7:27] discovered.

[7:27] >> Uh she was conscious. Um she was in a

[7:30] lot of pain in a fetal position. She was

[7:32] laying down on the ground. Immediately,

[7:34] Amy was taken to Emanuel Hospital by

[7:36] Lifellight, ending a frantic search and

[7:39] a dramatic discovery.

[7:40] >> We knew actually that this was a good

[7:43] find that we did a good job.

[7:47] >> And at our last update this evening, Amy

[7:50] is listed here in critical condition.

[7:52] Live in North Portland, Chad Carter, the

[7:54] 10:00 news.

[7:56] >> The search is on tonight for two

[7:58] shoplifterss caught on camera. to take a

[8:00] look at some of this video now from the

[8:01] Clackamus Town Center Nordstrom store.

[8:04] Security says the men in these pictures

[8:05] tried to take off with nearly $1,400 in

[8:08] clothing. A security guard followed them

[8:10] out of the store and into a parking

[8:12] garage. He says the men then started

[8:13] running and one fell down, dropping some

[8:15] of the stolen loot. Both men though got

[8:18] into a car and got away. Two men accused

[8:20] of robbing a local pub were behind bars

[8:22] tonight after deputies tracked them down

[8:24] with a high-risk traffic stop. Damascus

[8:27] Seymour and Antoine Johnson are

[8:29] suspected of robbing Dillinger's Pub in

[8:31] Milwaukee this morning. Deputies say the

[8:33] two took off after stealing from the

[8:35] pub's owner, but the owner was able to

[8:37] describe the getaway car and deputies

[8:39] able to track it down.

[8:41] >> Two men accused in a 13-year-old murder

[8:43] appeared in court today. Dana Rankins

[8:45] made his first court appearance this

[8:46] morning in the Multma County Justice

[8:48] Center. He faces several murder charges

[8:50] in the 1995 death of Cayla Peterson.

[8:52] Portland police say Rankins called them

[8:54] from St. Lewis to talk about the case

[8:56] and officers flew out there and ended up

[8:58] arresting him. They'd already arrested

[9:00] his cousin for the same murder that

[9:02] happened in northeast Portland. Shantel

[9:04] Moses is also facing murder charges and

[9:07] this is video of him in court last

[9:08] month. Police arrested him in March

[9:10] after getting a Crimestoppers tip.

[9:12] >> Now, Portland's first weather at 10.

[9:15] [music]

[9:15] >> Hey, good evening. Mark Nelson here in

[9:17] the first live local weather center

[9:18] today. Whoa, blustery afternoon. We

[9:20] started out of course with the really

[9:21] gray skies and then the sunshine did

[9:23] break out and we kind of had a break

[9:24] this evening. It was pretty dry, but now

[9:26] things beginning to change once again.

[9:28] Check out the live radar. You see the

[9:29] fresh sweep going around there and

[9:31] plenty of uh areas of green and also

[9:33] yellow beginning to show up here in the

[9:34] valley. Let's go a little bit closer and

[9:36] you'll see the movement here. The

[9:37] showers have been moving from the west

[9:39] moving off to the northeast. They came

[9:41] on shore about 2 hours ago and now they

[9:43] seem to be working into the valley as

[9:45] well. In fact, it looks like it's

[9:46] getting real wet from Salem up the I-5

[9:48] corridor up here towards Portland just

[9:50] to the north of Cami, Wilsonville. You

[9:52] folks looking real wet. And the same

[9:53] thing out in St. Paul. Temperatures

[9:55] right now, we're in the 50s. Of course,

[9:57] we had a little bit of sunshine late

[9:58] today. Looks like a lot more of that

[10:00] coming up in the 7-day forecast. Stick

[10:01] around for that coming up in a few

[10:03] minutes. Thank you, Mark. Well, pirates

[10:05] aren't just found off the coast of

[10:06] Africa. Tonight, local authorities say

[10:08] you can find pirates right here in local

[10:10] rivers. Coming up in just a few minutes,

[10:12] see what local authorities are dealing

[10:14] with now. A Portland police officer will

[10:17] not face charges in the death of a man

[10:18] who died in police custody. The Multma

[10:20] County DA has declined the case

[10:23] involving the in custody death of James

[10:25] Chassis. Now, the DA had considered

[10:27] taking the case after the man's family

[10:29] said video evidence incriminated the

[10:31] officer. They say you can hear officer

[10:33] Christopher Humphre telling jail staff

[10:35] he tackled Chassis during his arrest.

[10:37] Chassis died after receiving 26 broken

[10:40] rib cage bones and a punctured lung.

[10:43] >> Well, it looks like it's going to be

[10:44] months before the father and son accused

[10:46] of nearly killing a man on a local

[10:47] hiking trail will go to trial. Michael

[10:49] and Kevin Collins both appeared in court

[10:50] today and waved their right to a speedy

[10:52] trial. They'll face charges on attempted

[10:54] murder and robbery following the beating

[10:56] of Robert Kevin Tracy back in February.

[10:59] The Collins's trial right now is set to

[11:01] begin on August 24th. Only on 12,

[11:04] parents at a local high school are

[11:06] concerned about after learning about a

[11:08] possible drug investigation. Clark

[11:10] County deputies are looking into

[11:11] allegations that several teenagers at

[11:13] Hawinson High School may have sold drugs

[11:16] at the school. KPTV's Brent Weisber

[11:18] talked to parents and school

[11:19] administrators and joins us live with

[11:20] more in the story you'll see only on 12.

[11:22] Brent,

[11:22] >> Shauna, parents say these allegations

[11:24] are serious and could ruin the rest of

[11:25] the school year and possibly destroy the

[11:28] reputation of a local high school.

[11:31] >> I'm pretty surprised actually. Things

[11:33] like that don't usually happen out here.

[11:35] >> Parents of Hoskin High School students

[11:37] are concerned tonight after learning

[11:38] about a possible drug investigation at

[11:41] their children's school.

[11:42] >> We just don't have things like that out

[11:44] here. You know, it's a pretty it's a a

[11:45] close campus, tight-knit community, and

[11:48] I just don't see that happening.

[11:49] >> The school administrator says there is

[11:51] an investigation into drug abuse at the

[11:53] school and says it may involve students

[11:56] selling drugs.

[11:57] >> I don't know really anything about it

[11:58] other than that was quite a lot of kids

[12:00] involved. The district isn't saying much

[12:02] about the case and Clark County deputies

[12:04] don't comment on open cases involving

[12:06] students. And tonight, several parents

[12:08] we talked to say they heard the

[12:10] investigation centers around a handful

[12:12] of students.

[12:13] >> She just said that there were a lot of

[12:15] people that were involved in the

[12:16] incident and that people that she was

[12:18] really surprised would be there or be

[12:22] involved in something like that. One

[12:23] parent who asked not to be identified

[12:25] says a district administrator told him

[12:27] the students were illegally selling

[12:30] prescription drugs used for studying.

[12:32] >> It could have been um there's a lot of,

[12:34] you know, finals and things coming up.

[12:35] It could be the economy. It could just

[12:37] be, you know, senioritis. I I really

[12:39] don't know.

[12:39] >> Parents just hope whatever's going on

[12:41] gets resolved soon so their kids can

[12:44] focus on the future.

[12:45] >> We're pretty close around here and we

[12:47] want to keep it that way and make sure

[12:49] the kids all get to college and have a

[12:51] good life. So that's not one way to do

[12:52] it though for sure.

[12:55] >> We tried talking with the school

[12:56] principal. She refused to answer our

[12:58] questions tonight and a district

[12:59] spokesperson says it's against policy to

[13:01] comment on these types of situation.

[13:03] Reporting live tonight, Brent Weisberg,

[13:05] the 10:00 news.

[13:08] Well, kids tell on their drugdeing

[13:10] friends for cash. It's a controversial

[13:12] new program that police hope will

[13:14] eliminate drug problems in schools.

[13:16] Ahead in the final cut, see if 500 bucks

[13:19] is enough to inspire kids to rat out

[13:21] their friends.

[13:21] >> A Salem man accused of putting a dog

[13:23] shock collar on his young children is

[13:25] behind bars tonight on $80,000 bail.

[13:27] Police arrested Todd Markham yesterday

[13:30] and they say he admitted to using the

[13:32] shock collar on his kids for

[13:35] entertainment. He appeared in Marian

[13:37] County Court today where the judge set

[13:38] that bail. His four children are now

[13:40] living with their mother. Markham is set

[13:42] to be back in court later this month. He

[13:44] is known around the world for his

[13:46] designs, and tonight, a local puppeteer

[13:47] says one of his longtime employees stole

[13:50] more than $200,000 from him. Michael

[13:52] Curry's company makes costumes for

[13:54] Broadway shows like The Lion King and

[13:56] events like the opening ceremonies at

[13:58] the Olympics. He tells Fox 12 he

[14:00] discovered the losses last week and

[14:02] called police. KPTV's Jim Hyde reports.

[14:06] >> Police served a search warrant at the

[14:07] home of a woman who worked for Michael

[14:09] Curry Design. Police report finding

[14:11] documents and property ranging from

[14:13] clothing to gift cards that allegedly

[14:16] tie the employee to the embezzlement of

[14:18] more than $200,000. Curry says he

[14:20] confronted a woman about the red flags

[14:22] he saw when looking over company

[14:23] records. Police used one warrant to

[14:26] search the employees work area. Curry

[14:28] says most of the thefts were done

[14:30] digitally. He then fired the employee.

[14:32] McCur says he's run a business based on

[14:34] trust for years and says the thefts

[14:37] might have been discovered sooner if

[14:39] old-fashioned receipts and bookkeeping

[14:41] practices were still in use. Jim Hyde,

[14:44] the 10:00 news. [snorts]

[14:46] More testing is [music] leading to an

[14:48] uptick in the number of confirmed H1N1

[14:50] cases in Oregon. There are now 45 people

[14:53] who've tested for the flu virus in the

[14:55] state. There are 16 cases in PK County,

[14:57] the most in the state. Next is Multma

[14:59] with 11 confirmed cases. The state's

[15:01] health department says one teenage

[15:03] girl's hospitalized with the virus, but

[15:04] most everybody else is recovering at

[15:06] home. Washington state's total confirmed

[15:08] cases of H1N1 is now up to 23. That flu

[15:12] outbreak is keeping one local school

[15:14] district closed for the rest of the

[15:15] week. The Pulk County Health Department

[15:17] decided to keep the central school

[15:18] district closed. There are three

[15:20] confirmed H1N1 cases among the students

[15:23] in that district. More cases are also

[15:25] being evaluated. Now, the Forest Grove

[15:27] School District reopened today after two

[15:29] days off due to the H1N1 virus.

[15:32] >> Some good news tonight about graduation

[15:33] rates at Portland's public schools.

[15:35] They're going up. Results of the study

[15:37] on the class of 2007 are in. And

[15:39] graduation rates jumped across the

[15:41] board. Back in 2004, 57% of students

[15:44] graduated high school in Portland. In

[15:46] 2007, the school district says it was

[15:48] more than 63%. In fact, it's pretty much

[15:51] a 6% increase across the board in gender

[15:53] and minority groups. The district says

[15:55] intervention programs for struggling

[15:57] students has played a key role.

[16:00] >> Only on 12 tonight, a local family's

[16:02] outraged after they say they paid more

[16:03] than a thousand bucks for some furniture

[16:05] back in October and it still has not

[16:07] been delivered. It's now been 7 months

[16:10] since the Coler family bought a recliner

[16:12] and love seat from Furnishings for Less

[16:13] in North Portland, but they're still

[16:15] waiting for all of it to show up. They

[16:17] paid for the furniture in full, they

[16:18] say, with the expectation that it would

[16:20] be delivered in just a couple of months.

[16:23] We were told it would be two to three

[16:26] months because it was coming from

[16:27] overseas and uh we keep calling and

[16:30] calling and uh the typical answer for

[16:33] the last three or four months has been

[16:34] it's on the dock waiting to clear

[16:36] customs in Los Angeles. Furnishings for

[16:39] Less declined to comment on camera

[16:41] tonight, but they're calling the delay

[16:43] typical. The callers say they asked for

[16:45] a refund, but so far the company has

[16:47] refused.

[16:48] >> A local man is talking about losing

[16:49] $50,000 to a scam artist. He's hoping

[16:52] the same thing won't happen to you.

[16:54] 66-year-old Ruben Quam is postponing his

[16:57] retirement now because of the loss. A

[16:59] man named David Buchanan is spending 5

[17:01] years in prison after scamming Quam and

[17:03] others out of millions of dollars.

[17:05] Buchanan pretended to work for the

[17:07] Federal Reserve Bank and promised very

[17:09] high returns if victims invested with

[17:12] him. He also told his victim victims

[17:14] that he'd played for the Dallas Cowboys.

[17:17] >> Great big guy. He's from Hawaii and fast

[17:20] talker that this was a government uh

[17:23] deal out of the White House that we put

[17:26] X amount of dollars in and and and 6

[17:29] months every 100,000 you can get 3

[17:32] million back and I I don't I I it was

[17:36] Rick's son-in-law's brother. So I I I

[17:39] trusted those people.

[17:41] >> Fox 12 talked to another couple who said

[17:43] they lost $233,000

[17:45] to Buchanan scam. Others are trying to

[17:47] make up for losing millions. Tonight,

[17:49] Quan wants to remind you to read the

[17:51] fine print before you make any

[17:52] investment.

[17:53] >> When you think pirates, you may be

[17:55] picturing the waters off the coast of

[17:56] Somalia. But Multma County Sheriff

[17:58] deputies say pirates are active on

[18:00] Portland's waterways, too. Our news

[18:02] partners at the Portland Trabune say the

[18:04] pirates here aren't hijacking ships or

[18:06] taking hostages, but they are committing

[18:08] other crimes along local rivers. KPTV

[18:10] Sophie Song now joins us live to

[18:12] explain. So,

[18:13] >> sheriff's deputies with the river patrol

[18:14] division say the pirates commit a

[18:16] variety of thefts and sometimes even do

[18:18] drug deals. They say they steal

[18:20] everything from motors, barbecues to

[18:22] storage lockers. Basically, anything

[18:24] that can be carried away in a boat. The

[18:27] Portland Trabune reports that these

[18:28] crimes tend to increase during the

[18:30] spring and summer months when warm

[18:31] weather brings more people and their

[18:34] possessions into the marinas that line

[18:36] the Colombia and Wamtt Rivers. I mean,

[18:38] criminals taking advantage of anybody is

[18:40] not a good thing, but it it happens

[18:43] everywhere.

[18:44] >> Now, we've heard also of some incidents

[18:45] actually on the mortgage itself where uh

[18:48] folks are just basically coming off the

[18:50] water and because they can't go through

[18:52] the gate. See, and they basically

[18:54] vandalizing some of the boats.

[18:57] >> And the Portland Trabune says part of

[18:58] the problem is the vast area local law

[19:00] enforcement has to patrol. There are

[19:02] more than a hundred miles of banks along

[19:04] the Columbia, WamiT, and Sandy Rivers in

[19:07] Multma County alone. They say many of

[19:10] those areas are not regularly patrolled,

[19:12] giving easy access to pirates,

[19:14] especially at night. Port of Portland

[19:16] officials say they've recently installed

[19:18] new fencing around its terminals to try

[19:20] to keep the pirates out. And you can

[19:22] read more about the story in tomorrow's

[19:24] print edition of the Portland Tribune or

[19:26] online at portlandtribune.com.

[19:28] Reporting live, Sophie Stone, the 10:00

[19:30] news. The 10:00 news is just getting

[19:33] started.

[19:34] >> A little town is battling a big problem

[19:36] involving bullying, stealing, and

[19:38] harassment. Why victims say they can't

[19:40] turn to police for help. Is your

[19:43] Facebook account your own?

[19:45] >> Remember that registered sex offenders

[19:47] could have uh have access to the

[19:49] internet.

[19:49] >> The Fox 12 investigators show you how to

[19:51] safely use Facebook and what information

[19:54] you should probably take off the site.

[19:57] >> I'm overwhelmed. I'm relieved. It's a

[19:59] parent's worst nightmare, but it's now a

[20:01] dream come true. Why they're tucking

[20:03] their three-year-old boy in extra tight

[20:06] tonight. And a local man collapses from

[20:09] a seizure. With nobody around and no way

[20:11] to call for help, hear about the heroic

[20:13] rescue his family will be talking about

[20:15] for generations.

[20:17] And after a real wet start to this week,

[23:26] Old Chicago. Eat, drink, be yourself.

[23:34] The economic crisis is hitting another

[23:36] company with local ties. Sage Software

[23:38] is eliminating 500 positions throughout

[23:41] the US. The company provides business

[23:43] software and services. This is video of

[23:45] Sage's Beaverton location. The company's

[23:47] not releasing specific numbers of job

[23:49] reductions or for each of its sites.

[23:51] Now, some of the cuts will come from

[23:53] open positions that are not being

[23:55] filled.

[23:57] In news across the Northwest tonight, we

[23:59] don't think there were any real estate

[24:00] agents in medieval times. So, an Idaho

[24:02] couple isn't using one now to sell their

[24:04] castle. But the majestic medieval style

[24:07] castle in Troy, Idaho is up for sale.

[24:10] The couple isn't going the traditional

[24:12] route to sell it. Instead, they're

[24:13] offering $25,000 to anyone who finds

[24:16] them a buyer and closes the deal. The

[24:18] price is $800,000.

[24:21] The average Joe Schmo down the road

[24:22] could call up his dentist and he could

[24:24] buy the home and he gets 25 grand.

[24:28] >> Okay. The castle sits on six acres. It

[24:30] comes with a medieval style dining room

[24:32] table and chairs, chandeliers, even a

[24:35] dungeon. Can you imagine eating a turkey

[24:37] leg sitting at that table?

[24:38] >> There's also

[24:39] >> Yes, I can. As a matter of fact,

[24:40] >> there's also a pond which the new owner

[24:43] could probably call a boat if you wanted

[24:44] to.

[24:48] We had all of five lightning strikes

[24:50] here today in northwest Oregon, mostly

[24:51] around Esticada [music]

[24:52] and also Sandy, but farther to the east,

[24:54] severe thunderstorms over in Umatillaa

[24:56] County. You can see all the lightning

[24:57] strikes there around 5:00. And those

[24:59] storms have now moved out into Idaho and

[25:01] are pretty much all finished for the

[25:02] night. We've got a much calmer forecast

[25:04] and a real nice weekend getaway forecast

[25:06] coming up.

[25:07] >> There is a new way for teens to make

[25:08] some extra cash. The catch, they have to

[25:10] snitch on their friends. Coming up, how

[25:12] a quest to make schools drug-f [music]

[25:14] free is turning into some big bucks for

[25:16] local or not for local schools.

[25:18] >> Also, two suspected thieves are behind

[25:20] bars. All thanks to a 10-year-old boy

[25:21] here for the young nabber [music] who

[25:23] says he caught them all in the act.

[25:25] >> He finished big in the Kentucky Derby.

[25:27] Now, the local owner of Musk Man is

[25:29] getting ready for the next big race.

[25:30] [music] Do what it takes to be a winner.

[25:32] >> And what would you do with a hundred

[25:33] bucks? Pay the bills, maybe dinner,

[25:34] maybe a movie.

[25:35] >> Yeah. Stick around. Fox 12 is giving you

[25:36] a chance to win a $100 prepaid

[25:39] Mastercard.

[25:40] You're watching the 10:00 [music] news

[29:05] >> You are looking at live pictures of a

[29:07] wildfire that's burning in Santa

[29:09] Barbara, California. Is so far burning

[29:11] hundreds of acres and has already

[29:13] destroyed several homes.

[29:14] >> We've got a couple of different cameras

[29:16] on this fire right now. aerial shots

[29:18] that we want to kind of go back and

[29:19] forth to show you the scope of the fire

[29:21] that's burning right now. It's said to

[29:24] be about 500 acres, I think, at last

[29:26] check. And we know at least 8,000 people

[29:28] have now been evacuated from the area.

[29:30] As you look there at a shot of a fire

[29:32] truck that's pulling up to a road as

[29:34] they try to use those roads as fire

[29:36] brakes to keep them from burning into

[29:37] homes. But Shauna, we already know that

[29:38] a lot of homes have burned.

[29:39] >> Yeah, several very uh luxury homes have

[29:41] burned. No word really on exactly how

[29:43] many homes have burned. We know that

[29:44] more than 800 firefighters are battling

[29:47] this blaze. Three firefighters have been

[29:49] hurt so far uh with burns. Don't know a

[29:52] whole lot about their injuries, but it's

[29:54] been less than 6 months since since

[29:55] another fire really just ravaged this

[29:57] area and destroyed hundreds of homes. Is

[29:59] that right?

[29:59] >> 200. Yeah. 200 homes about 6 months ago

[30:02] in the same general area of Santa

[30:04] Barbara, Monaceto. Uh this though fire

[30:07] uh according to one witness is closer to

[30:09] the center of town in Santa Barbara than

[30:11] any past wildfires that they can

[30:13] remember. Look at that firet truck

[30:14] almost surrounded there with the bend of

[30:17] of the flames there. And uh earlier

[30:19] tonight, there were lots of shots of

[30:21] houses going up in flames. So far,

[30:23] there's not an exact count or even a

[30:26] rough count on how many homes have gone

[30:28] up in this wildfire.

[30:29] >> We're going to continue to watch this,

[30:30] keep our eyes on it. We'll bring you new

[30:32] information as it comes in, but again,

[30:34] massive wildfire burning through

[30:36] Southern California near Santa Barbara.

[30:41] I'm Kevin Kawari and here now is a look

[30:42] at what's coming up new tonight on the

[30:44] 11 o'clock news. Local cops may be

[30:45] searching for a serial thief. Why your

[30:47] neighborhood grocery store could be his

[30:49] next target if police don't find him

[30:51] soon? Also new at 11, haunting

[30:53] surveillance video just before a college

[30:55] student is shot to death in a bookstore.

[30:58] But are these pictures giving cops what

[31:00] they need to track the shooter down?

[31:02] Gone for nearly a week, lost in the

[31:05] great outdoors.

[31:08] How you feeling? Not

[31:10] >> too good. New at 11, this hiker's

[31:12] incredible survival story and what it

[31:13] took to finally find him. And take a

[31:15] look at this. Getting rid of glasses for

[31:18] good. All you need to do is go under the

[31:20] gun. The piercing gun that is much more

[31:24] coming up at the top of the hour on the

[31:26] 11:00 news.

[31:29] And tonight's consumer watch is going to

[31:30] cost a little bit more to drink the hard

[31:32] stuff up in Washington. and the state

[31:33] liquor control board voted today to

[31:35] raise the markup on alcohol in state

[31:37] liquor stores by 32%. That price

[31:40] increase goes into effect August 1st.

[31:43] The board says it will raise $80 million

[31:45] over two years. The legislature

[31:47] previously removed $79 million from a

[31:50] liquor fund. Just this week, we made it

[31:52] easier than ever for Fox 12 viewers to

[31:54] stay connected with breaking news and

[31:56] weather by adding a free iPhone

[31:58] application. It's available in the

[32:01] iPhone app store on iTunes. And today we

[32:03] learned that it made the list of the

[32:05] most downloaded free news applications.

[32:08] It joins a list that features Yahoo, USA

[32:11] Today, Consumer Reports, and some big

[32:13] papers as well. Right now, we're ranked

[32:15] at number 18. To add it to your iPhone,

[32:27] >> Chief Meteorologist Mark Nelson is here

[32:28] with a check of the forecast. And before

[32:30] you're allowed to talk about weather, we

[32:31] are allowed, we get to wish you a happy

[32:33] birthday because you're celebrating sort

[32:34] of a milestone birthday.

[32:36] >> What do you mean by a milestone?

[32:37] >> Well, you know those big the the decade

[32:38] numbers every time you hit a new decade.

[32:40] Yeah, you're finally hit 30.

[32:42] >> 40. I'm 40 years old today. Just before

[32:44] the moon landing. That's how old I am.

[32:45] >> Happy birthday.

[32:46] >> Well, happy birthday, Mark.

[32:47] >> Well, I think the key to life is don't

[32:49] take things too seriously. Always have

[32:50] fun.

[32:51] >> Okay.

[32:51] >> Enjoy your job. Family is important.

[32:53] >> Yes. You don't uh no gray hairs?

[32:55] >> Not yet. Not yet. I don't color my hair.

[32:58] I don't color my hair. Just sometimes

[32:59] people ask.

[33:00] >> Yeah, there was some rumor circulating.

[33:02] >> Yeah, Drew Jackson thought so. Okay,

[33:03] let's take a look outside right now. Uh

[33:05] river cam right now shows a few

[33:07] sprinkles beginning to show up there and

[33:09] we'll see a lot more sprinkles coming up

[33:10] tonight. Looks real wet out there

[33:12] overnight tonight. Now, let's look at

[33:14] the live radar and the showers

[33:15] definitely coming back in. kind of a

[33:17] nice window this evening uh during the

[33:19] about the time the kids are out doing

[33:21] their baseball practice or games or

[33:22] lacrosse or whatever they do outside in

[33:24] the spring evenings. Uh here's the radar

[33:26] 10:30 p.m. here the current picture, but

[33:28] we can back it up 3 hours and all these

[33:30] showers came from offshore moved over

[33:32] the coast range. Now it's looking pretty

[33:34] wet. In fact, I think another soaker

[33:36] coming up in spots tonight. Tiger, some

[33:37] pretty heavy rain right over you that's

[33:39] headed up towards downtown Portland at

[33:41] this hour. And uh Westland getting some

[33:43] pretty good rain as well. and more rain

[33:45] around Sherwood and then out towards

[33:46] Carlton as well. So, another wet night

[33:48] coming up. Let's take a look at the time

[33:49] lapse from earlier this evening. We had

[33:51] that big break, the sun breaks. Along

[33:53] with that, we had a strong wind. Man, we

[33:55] had a west wind gust uh I think 31 miles

[33:57] per hour out of PDX. Uh it was shaking

[33:59] the camera around quite a bit earlier

[34:01] this evening. That wind has pretty much

[34:02] died down now. So, good news there, but

[34:05] I think we will see a brighter day

[34:07] coming up for tomorrow. And tomorrow,

[34:10] just a chance for a shower. We just have

[34:11] a light south wind, 9 miles per hour

[34:13] right now here in Portland. It's 54°. Uh

[34:15] we'll drop to about 47 tonight. Showers

[34:17] will continue off and on overnight

[34:19] tonight. Uh we've had about 2 inches of

[34:21] rainfall so far this month. We only

[34:23] average 2.38. So we could have all of

[34:26] our May rainfall by the time we get to

[34:27] uh weather chat time tomorrow evening at

[34:30] this time. So we'll see about that.

[34:31] Western Jetream, it's been very wet. We

[34:33] think it's going to buckle though and

[34:34] start to move to the north. So a drying

[34:36] trend coming up. Just a chance for a

[34:37] shower tomorrow. Tomorrow much brighter

[34:39] day. Here we are at 2 p.m. our cloud

[34:41] rain forecast um showing the chance for

[34:44] showers on the coast range by tomorrow

[34:46] afternoon all the way up towards uh

[34:47] let's say up into southwest Washington.

[34:49] But notice Friday maybe some brief

[34:51] morning clouds. Most of Friday though

[34:53] looking pretty nice. And Saturday looks

[34:55] beautiful as well. Saturday may be a

[34:56] cloudless day coming up. Uh weekend

[34:58] getaway. We better get that out of the

[34:59] way here because looks like a great

[35:01] weekend. The coastline near 65 on

[35:03] Saturday. Sunday near 60. Mount Hood Ski

[35:06] Bowl we got free skiing coming up on

[35:07] Sunday. Uh their customer appreciation

[35:10] day looks mostly sunny up there and

[35:12] sunny east of the Cascades. Temperatures

[35:14] in the mid60s on Saturday. Uh maybe

[35:16] Sunday getting up into the lower 70s.

[35:18] Forecast in for east of the Cascades for

[35:20] tomorrow for your Thursday. It looks

[35:21] like 64 at the Dallas, 52 at John Day.

[35:23] Partly cloudy skies. Mount Hood

[35:25] tomorrow. Another cool day. Just a

[35:27] chance for a shower up there. 32 at

[35:28] Timberline and 56 for a high temperature

[35:31] at Welches. And then west of the

[35:32] Cascades for tomorrow, brighter day,

[35:34] just a few light showers. Nothing like

[35:36] the gloom we had half of today. And then

[35:38] the showers this afternoon. Showers and

[35:39] sun breaks we'll call it. West side of

[35:41] town about 61 at Hillsborough, 62 at

[35:43] Lake Oiggo. East side of town, same

[35:45] thing. The showers may linger until late

[35:47] afternoon though up against the

[35:48] Cascades. Places like Sandy and Cascade

[35:50] locks. Here in the city, 47 early

[35:52] showers, sun break, some drying coming

[35:54] up late in the day. I think the high

[35:55] temperature tomorrow about 62 degrees.

[35:57] Little below average for this time of

[35:59] the year. 7-day forecast though, real

[36:00] nice Friday, Saturday, and Sunday right

[36:02] around 70. Showers will return though

[36:05] coming up on Monday.

[36:09] Tonight's final cut is all about

[36:11] information, including some hackers

[40:04] >> Stand by [music] the final cut in 3 2 1.

[40:07] Cue them.

[40:07] >> And final cut begins with a football

[40:09] player accused of having consensual sex

[40:10] with a 15-year-old girl. Anthony Mix of

[40:12] the Tampa Bay Buccaneers turned himself

[40:14] into police. But despite turning himself

[40:16] in, Mix's attorney says the claims are

[40:18] bogus. Investigators say the two had sex

[40:21] earlier this year. Right now, the team

[40:22] is waiting for that investigation to be

[40:24] completed before considering action

[40:26] against Mix.

[40:27] >> The final cut heads to Texas now where a

[40:29] police department's being sued, accused

[40:31] of shaking down minority drivers and

[40:33] stealing millions of dollars worth of

[40:35] their stuff. A Texas law allows police

[40:38] to confiscate money and other property

[40:39] if they believe it's part of a crime.

[40:41] But the officers are accused of pulling

[40:43] over innocent drivers, mostly

[40:45] African-American and Hispanic, taking

[40:47] their stuff, and then not giving it back

[40:49] after the investigation was over. One

[40:52] family says they were even threatened

[40:53] with losing their kids if they didn't

[40:55] sign paperwork, agreeing to give up

[40:57] $6,000 they were going to use to buy a

[41:00] car.

[41:01] >> I said, "If it's the money you want, you

[41:03] can have it. You can have it. If if

[41:04] that's what it takes to keep my children

[41:06] with me and not separate them from us,

[41:08] take the money." Well, the family was

[41:10] never accused of a crime. Now, an

[41:12] attorney has filed a lawsuit on behalf

[41:14] of 150 drivers, trying to get an

[41:16] estimated $3 million worth of cash and

[41:20] property returned. To Virginia now,

[41:22] where hackers claim they've stolen

[41:23] millions of patients and prescription

[41:25] records, and they want $10 million to

[41:27] keep quiet. Now, there's no proof that

[41:29] the hackers have the information they

[41:31] say they have. But Virginia's Department

[41:33] of Health Professions has shut down its

[41:35] website after the possible security

[41:37] breach in its computer system. The FBI

[41:39] and state police are investigating.

[41:41] >> Paying teens to rent out their friends

[41:43] doing drugs. Will it work? Deputies in a

[41:45] New York suburb are hoping so. They've

[41:47] begun spreading flyers at high school

[41:48] campuses, offering students 500 bucks

[41:51] when they text cops about other students

[41:53] doing drugs. Deputies say it'll hope uh

[41:55] they hope it'll make campuses drug-free,

[41:57] but students aren't so sure.

[42:00] >> I think the money definitely appeals to

[42:01] teenagers, but um other than that, I

[42:05] don't really think so. I think that

[42:06] there's the fear that you'll be get

[42:08] you'll get caught and people will find

[42:09] out that you told and no one really

[42:11] wants to be like the snitch.

[42:12] >> Critics of the new program peer students

[42:14] won't want to tell on their peers and

[42:16] fear that they'll be picked on. Deputies

[42:17] say only time will tell if it all works.

[42:20] >> A fourth grader wants to become a police

[42:21] officer when he grows up. He already has

[42:23] something to put on his resume. Police

[42:25] in Massachusetts say the 10-year-old boy

[42:26] caught two guys who were trying to steal

[42:28] a GPS device. He was just skateboarding

[42:30] when he saw a car pull up and one of the

[42:32] men inside got out and went up to a

[42:34] parked car.

[42:36] and he would smash it in the window so

[42:38] he can drop um he can steal a GPS.

[42:42] >> Well, the boy called his dad who

[42:44] followed the men and then the fourth

[42:45] grader called 911. Police were able to

[42:48] catch both of the suspects. The boy

[42:50] school honored him with a presentation

[42:51] and certificate. Just when they were

[42:54] beginning to lose hope, hundreds of

[42:55] volunteers got the news that everyone

[42:57] had been waiting for. A three-year-old

[42:59] boy missing for 2 days had been found

[43:01] alive in Missouri. Rescuers think the

[43:04] boy fell asleep in the woods and they

[43:05] found him in some rugged terrain today.

[43:08] Doctors checked out the boy at a

[43:09] hospital before sending him home to his

[43:12] parents. A Portland man is back at home

[43:14] tonight after enjoying the experience of

[43:16] a lifetime. He's a retired school

[43:18] teacher, but this past weekend he

[43:20] watched as a horse he owns finished

[43:23] third in the Kentucky Derby. Here's

[43:25] KPTV's Matt Smith.

[43:27] Vic Carlson is 61 years old. And if you

[43:29] ask him, he'll tell you he's benefited

[43:31] from a little bit of skill and a little

[43:33] bit of luck. A year and a half ago,

[43:34] Carlson bought a horse named Musket Man

[43:37] for $15,000.

[43:39] That's chump change by Kentucky Derby

[43:41] standards. But Carlson stayed with the

[43:43] horse, paid for the training, and lo and

[43:45] behold, this past Saturday, Musket Man

[43:47] blew right past several multi-million

[43:49] dollar competitors and placed third at

[43:52] the Kentucky Derby. based on an offer he

[43:54] received three weeks before the race.

[43:56] The horse was valued at $16 million now.

[43:59] But for Carlson, the experience hasn't

[44:01] been about the money. It's been about

[44:03] having a shot at owning a horse that

[44:05] raced in the Kentucky Derby.

[44:07] >> The fact that other people rever the

[44:10] Kentucky Derby as much as they do makes

[44:12] it a big deal. That dawned on me about

[44:14] halfway through the week. You know, it

[44:15] it may just be another horse race or it

[44:17] may be a horse race. It may be similar

[44:19] to a horse race, but it is the horse

[44:21] race. I'll always be able to say that

[44:23] that I owned a horse that ran third in

[44:25] the Kentucky Derby. And I I think that's

[44:27] an accomplishment that even some of the

[44:29] most uh accomplished horsemen don't get

[44:32] to do. Next up for Musket Man, the

[44:34] PNness Stakes, which is the second leg

[44:36] of the Triple Crown. That's nine days

[44:38] away. Meanwhile, there's a great story

[44:40] about how Carlson and his girlfriend

[44:41] came up with the name Musket Man, but it

[44:44] may not be suitable for our general

[44:45] audience. So, if you'd like to hear that

[44:47] story, it's available right now on our

[44:49] website, kptv.com. Matt Smith, the 10

[44:51] o'clock news.

[44:53] >> All right, only on 12. A Portland family

[44:55] says their pet dog is more than man's

[44:57] best friend. She's also their hero. A

[45:00] couple of weeks ago, their grandpa had a

[45:01] seizure and it was the family dog Coco

[45:04] who came to the rescue. KPTV Sophie Song

[45:07] joins us live with how that pooch saved

[45:08] his life. Sophie.

[45:09] >> Well, Grandpa Rick Buck says when he had

[45:11] his seizure, he fell to the floor

[45:13] unconscious. The rest of the family was

[45:15] in the living room and had no idea what

[45:18] had happened. That's when Coco, the

[45:20] German Shepherd mix, started making a

[45:22] ruckus. The family says she started

[45:24] barking furiously trying to get their

[45:26] attention. They followed the dog into

[45:28] Buck's room. They say Koko ran in three

[45:30] circles and then played dead. That was

[45:33] enough for the family to realize

[45:34] something was wrong and they spotted

[45:36] Buck on the floor.

[45:39] Seizures are so and the grand malls that

[45:41] I have are so serious that I could have

[45:44] died having a seizure and no one would

[45:48] have known about it.

[45:49] >> Every night before bed, she walks around

[45:50] the house and she makes sure everybody's

[45:52] okay and then she'll wait for us and

[45:53] she'll laid out by the door.

[45:56] >> Family says they called 911 right away

[45:58] and an ambulance took Grandpa Buck to

[45:59] the hospital. They say with seizures,

[46:01] time is of essence. And if Koko had not

[46:04] alerted them to what had happened, their

[46:06] grandpa could have died. Tonight, the

[46:08] family says they're especially grateful

[46:10] to have Coco in their home. They

[46:11] rewarded her with lots of doggy treats,

[46:13] and they say they treat her like

[46:15] royalty. Reporting live, Sophie, the

[46:18] 10:00 news.

[46:23] Well, if you have a Facebook profile,

[46:25] Portland police have a warning for you

[46:26] tonight. Investigators say some Facebook

[46:29] users put way too much personal

[46:31] information on their pages and that can

[46:33] put their safety in danger. KPTV

[46:35] Stephanie Kovich explains.

[46:39] >> It's stuff really simple that people

[46:41] don't think about that could put you in

[46:42] position where you could be in some

[46:44] severe danger.

[46:45] >> A simple search of the Portland Network

[46:47] on Facebook reveals thousands of

[46:49] profiles not set to private. With the

[46:52] click of a mouse, we found birth dates,

[46:55] phone numbers, relationship details, and

[46:58] even provocative pictures of people who

[47:00] live, work, and go to school in the Rose

[47:02] City.

[47:03] >> When you put that information on there,

[47:05] other people are going to see it. And

[47:06] there they can take that information and

[47:08] do all kinds of things with that. They

[47:09] can track down where you live. They can

[47:12] track down possibly, you know, where you

[47:13] work. Detective Mary Wheat of the

[47:15] Portland Police Bureau says while

[47:17] identity theft has not been a problem on

[47:20] Facebook, keeping a profile wide open

[47:22] for the public to see is almost always a

[47:25] bad idea, especially for young women.

[47:28] >> Uh remember that registered sex

[47:29] offenders could have uh have access to

[47:32] the internet.

[47:33] >> And all you have to do is log on to

[47:34] Facebook to find thousands of people in

[47:36] Portland who have pages that are not set

[47:39] to private.

[47:40] >> It's pretty scary. I mean, your

[47:41] information is just kind of for anyone's

[47:44] taking. 19-year-old Sheena Wheeler says

[47:46] until we asked her about why her page

[47:48] was public, she hadn't given it much

[47:50] thought.

[47:51] >> I just think that people don't really

[47:53] think about it. They're just like, "Oh,

[47:55] whatever. I'm probably safe. Like, who's

[47:57] going to know, you know, who's going to

[47:59] want to do that to me?" People just are

[48:02] kind of in their safe little bubble and

[48:04] they don't really think about that. I've

[48:06] noticed people put their address on

[48:07] there, their actual like PO box or their

[48:10] apartment number, like I moved into a

[48:12] new place. I find that just astonishing

[48:15] that you would be able to put that kind

[48:16] of information out there.

[48:19] When we confronted some young women at

[48:21] their homes about why their very

[48:23] detailed profiles were open, they seemed

[48:25] surprised we were able to find them.

[48:28] >> So, we were able to just pull you up

[48:30] out. I don't know if if young girls

[48:33] especially are thinking about the

[48:35] consequences of some of this.

[48:37] >> Detective Mary Wheat says when it comes

[48:39] to any kind of online networking, the

[48:41] more secure your profile is, the better.

[48:44] If you'd like to make your page private,

[48:46] all you have to do is log on, click on

[48:48] settings, then privacy, then profile.

[48:51] Make sure all of the features are set to

[48:53] only friends. It is that easy. But

[48:56] Detective Wheat says there are still way

[48:58] too many people networking online who

[49:00] have not taken those simple steps.

[49:03] >> Now we've got Twitter, um, all of that

[49:05] stuff where people are are putting such

[49:20] >> So you might be wondering, how do you

[49:22] make sure your kids are protected when

[49:23] surfing the web? Well, make sure that

[49:25] you share with your kids what

[49:26] information they should be posting

[49:28] online. Remind them that once they post

[49:30] something like their birthday, they

[49:32] can't take it back. You can use privacy

[49:34] settings to restrict who can access your

[49:37] post on Facebook or MySpace pages. And

[49:39] finally, if your kids feel uncomfortable

[49:42] or threatened by something they see

[49:43] online, encourage them to tell you right

[49:46] away. Trust your gut. If it doesn't feel

[49:48] right, it probably isn't worth the

[49:50] trouble. Okay, so what happens if you do

[49:52] become an ID theft victim? Well, experts

[49:54] say you should immediately place a fraud

[49:56] alert on your credit reports and review

[49:58] them carefully. Also, close any accounts

[50:00] if they've been tampered with or if

[50:02] someone's opened them in your name. And

[50:04] finally, file a police report with your

[50:06] local agency. Experts say that is an

[50:09] essential step in claiming your consumer

[50:11] rights. All of these tips and many more

[59:45] >> Vancouver police say Foxwell's most

[59:47] wanted is accused of using a gun to get

[59:49] away with stolen drugs from a local

[59:51] pharmacy. Police think the person who

[59:52] robbed this Safeway pharmacy is likely.

[59:55] same person who robbed the Safeway on

[59:57] Northeast 162nd Street last month. The

[60:00] latest robbery happened last night

[60:01] around 7:00 in both cases. Vancouver

[60:04] police say that the man walked in and

[60:06] started demanding prescription

[60:08] painkillers. And in last night's

[60:09] robbery, the thief got away with a large

[60:11] stash of Oxycottton. Police say the drug

[60:14] theft is increasing. They blame it on

[60:16] the weak economy. Shoppers say they're

[60:18] shocked to hear about that trend.

[60:21] >> No, no, this is this is not good. Not

[60:23] not at all.

[60:25] uh it's going to get worse before it

[60:26] gets better I think. But uh you know

[60:29] these things happen I guess every day

[60:31] >> there's really no point of stealing and

[60:34] cuz anyways people should not steal just

[60:37] because of the economy or because they

[60:39] don't have something. They should like

[60:40] at least just like try and get a job.

[60:43] >> Now these are surveillance pictures

[60:44] provided by police on the April 21st

[60:47] heist. Police described the robber as a

[60:49] white male clean shaven. They say he's

[60:51] about 50 years old, 5'9", weighing about

[60:54] 190 lbs. They also point out in the

[60:56] first robbery, the suspect had facial

[60:58] hair, but in yesterday's robbery, he did

[61:00] not. Police won't release how much

[61:02] medicine the man got away with. If you

[61:03] know anything about this case, call

[61:05] Vancouver Police. Reporting live tonight

[61:06] in News Control, Brent Weisberg, the

[61:08] 11:00 news. Tonight, Portland police are

[61:11] investigating what appears to be a

[61:12] stabbing that happened right out in

[61:13] front of the Portland Rescue Mission.

[61:15] Police are releasing few details about

[61:17] what happened tonight, but they say it

[61:18] appears to be a fight between two

[61:20] transients that sent one man to the

[61:22] hospital with non-life-threatening

[61:23] injuries. The suspect tonight remains on

[61:25] the run. Investigators are not sure

[61:27] exactly how the victim was cut. They say

[61:29] it is possible the suspect was wearing a

[61:31] ring and that's what cut the victim.

[61:33] Now, witnesses we talked to say the

[61:34] victim appeared to have a gash to the

[61:36] left part of his face under his ear.

[61:38] They say while he was bleeding a lot, he

[61:40] appeared to be okay. Police have not

[61:42] released a suspect description in this

[61:43] one, but if you know anything that could

[61:45] help, please contact Portland police

[61:47] near downtown. Mark Henrahan, the 11:00

[61:49] news.

[61:50] >> An [snorts] amazing story of survival of

[61:52] what could be called a miraculous

[61:53] discovery after a woman is trampled by a

[61:56] horse and her call to 911 is cut off. It

[62:00] happened to this morning when Clacamus

[62:02] County dispatchers were forced to search

[62:03] for where the call came from after

[62:06] static and bad cell coverage prevented

[62:08] them from talking to the injured woman.

[62:10] Thanks to a voicemail greeting naming

[62:12] the stable, dispatchers were able to

[62:14] locate a home where they thought she

[62:16] might be. And to their amazement, a

[62:17] Clackamus County deputy was able to

[62:19] locate her and call for help. She was

[62:22] taken by Lifellight here to Emanuel

[62:24] Hospital where tonight the woman only

[62:26] identified as Amy is in critical

[62:28] condition. In North Portland tonight,

[62:31] Chad Carter, the 11:00 news. People

[62:33] living in one area of North Portland are

[62:35] dealing with a big mess after they say

[62:37] sewage filled their basements and now

[62:39] they're having to deal with the cleanup.

[62:41] Cleaning and restoration crews worked at

[62:43] this home all day trying to get all the

[62:44] ruined carpet and damaged walls out.

[62:46] People on the street say at least eight

[62:48] homes had sewage backed up into their

[62:50] basements. One neighbor says it started

[62:52] to shoot out every drain in their

[62:53] basement Saturday afternoon. Some homes

[62:56] had up to 5 in of the dirty, murky

[62:58] water. Homeowners say the city came out

[63:00] here to check on the sewer line Monday,

[63:01] and they say the city told them they did

[63:04] find a problem. We did call the Bureau

[63:05] of Environmental Services, which handles

[63:07] the sewer lines, but did not get a call

[63:09] back. In the meantime, homeowners are

[63:11] spending thousands of dollars to clean

[63:12] up the mess. Reporting in North Portland

[63:14] tonight, Andrew Padulla, the 11:00 news.

[63:17] We also have some new details tonight

[63:19] about a man accused of hurting a toddler

[63:21] after firing a gun as a dare. Angel

[63:23] Munoz was sentenced today. In March,

[63:25] Munoz pleaded guilty to reckless

[63:27] endangering and unlawful use of a

[63:29] weapon. An assault charge was dropped as

[63:31] part of a plea deal. Gresham police

[63:33] arrested Munoz back in October after

[63:35] they say he fired several shots. One

[63:37] bullet went into a nearby house and

[63:39] grazed a toddler's face. Munoz told

[63:42] investigators he fired the gun because a

[63:44] friend dared him.

[63:49] In our top three national headlines

[63:51] tonight, cops are searching for a gunman

[63:53] tonight after a deadly shooting on a

[63:55] college campus. Police say the man seen

[63:57] in a surveillance video shot and killed

[63:59] a Wesleyan University student at a

[64:01] bookstore near the Connecticut campus.

[64:04] Investigators say they know who the

[64:05] shooter is, 29-year-old Steven Morgan.

[64:08] While the search for Morgan intensifies,

[64:10] the university is asking students and

[64:12] staff to stay indoors.

[64:15] Walmart is paying out big bucks tonight

[64:17] after a deadly stampede outside a store

[64:19] last year. The store was has agreed to

[64:21] pay out nearly $2 million, including

[64:24] $400,000 in victim's compensation to

[64:27] avoid criminal charges. Walmart also

[64:29] agreed to improve safety at his New York

[64:31] stores. Hundreds of shoppers started a

[64:33] stampede to get into a store for an

[64:35] afterth Thanksgiving sale and trampled a

[64:38] man to death. 11 others were also hurt.

[64:41] The governator says it's time to talk

[64:43] about pot legalizing it. That is

[64:46] California Governor Arnold

[64:47] Schwarzenegger says he welcomes a public

[64:49] debate on proposals to legalize

[64:51] marijuana. Some lawmakers there suggest

[64:53] doing so could provide a lucrative new

[64:55] revenue source for the state. Still, the

[64:57] governor says the decision to legalize

[64:59] marijuana should not be made solely on

[65:01] the basis of raising cash. Marijuana has

[65:03] been outlawed in the US since 1937.

[65:09] And now to news caught on camera.

[65:11] Investigators want to know what caused

[65:12] two planes to crash, killing at least

[65:15] two people. The planes collided at a

[65:17] Palm Beach County airport in Florida

[65:19] Wednesday morning. Investigators have

[65:21] not released the victim's names. Also

[65:23] caught on camera, a man robbing an

[65:24] Arizona jewelry store, but he didn't get

[65:26] away because the owner fought back. Cops

[65:29] say the robber held the owner at

[65:31] gunpoint and tried to steal a $9,000

[65:33] ring, but the owner chased the suspect,

[65:36] put him in a headlock, and got that ring

[65:38] back. Now that suspect faces robbery

[65:41] charges.

[65:44] In our top three international headlines

[65:46] tonight, violence breaks out between

[65:47] protesters and police in Georgia. Police

[65:50] armed with batons clashed with

[65:52] protesters outside the police compound

[65:54] in Tlisi. The scuffles began when

[65:56] hundreds of protesters converged on

[65:58] police headquarters to demand the

[66:00] release of three people. Dozens were

[66:02] injured during the clashes, mostly with

[66:04] head injuries. Opponents of their

[66:06] current president are demanding his

[66:08] resignation.

[66:10] A message in a bottle from the Holocaust

[66:13] in April. Construction workers

[66:15] discovered the note in what's now a

[66:17] school. Prisoners wrote that message and

[66:19] placed it in a bottle and put it in a

[66:21] concrete wall. The document was written

[66:23] back in 1944 and it lists the names of

[66:26] seven prisoners, their camp numbers, and

[66:28] their hometowns. One of the survivors

[66:30] said they never thought they would

[66:32] survive and wrote the note to leave

[66:33] behind a trace of their lives. The note

[66:36] is now in a museum.

[66:38] A creepy crawly problem in Australia.

[66:41] Look at this. Giant venomous spiders

[66:43] have invaded a town in Queensland. The

[66:46] eastern tarantulas, known as bird

[66:48] eaters, have been wandering into the

[66:49] town after recent floods. disturb their

[66:52] habitat. They don't really eat birds,

[66:54] but they do hiss. And the spiders can

[66:56] kill a dog and seriously hurt a human

[66:58] with just one bite.

[67:01] >> Now, Portland's first complete forecast

[67:04] at 11 from your first live local [music]

[67:07] weather team.

[67:08] >> Well, it was an active weather day

[67:09] across the Northwest as yet another

[67:11] unusually strong storm for May rolled on

[67:14] through. But there are signs that over

[67:15] the next 24 hours, the rain will be

[67:16] decreasing. And we're still looking for

[67:18] a nice weekend here coming up. That

[67:20] hasn't changed. Outside live we go here

[67:22] as of this 11:00 hour. Our view from the

[67:24] Skyline camera shows that it is cloudy

[67:27] outside still and there is some rain

[67:29] around some of that rain heavy. We've

[67:31] seen the showers actually pick up a

[67:32] little bit over the last couple hours.

[67:34] We can see those on the live radar right

[67:35] now. And this is the scenario over

[67:37] northwest Oregon, southwest Washington.

[67:39] Notice some of the yellows and oranges,

[67:41] even a little bit of red mixed in. We'll

[67:43] zoom in here a little bit closer.

[67:44] Interstate 5 right along here. Salem,

[67:46] you've got a heavy shower nearby. and

[67:48] out towards Canvi, a downpour in some

[67:50] spots. So from Canby on east out towards

[67:53] Canvi, uh Caris, I should say, and

[67:55] almost up to the Oregon City area, some

[67:57] heavy rain at the moment. And we'll

[67:59] scoot a little farther to the north

[68:00] here, sections of southeast Portland out

[68:02] towards Gresham, Rockwood, Troutdale, up

[68:04] into Cameas and Wugal. Some very heavy

[68:06] rain at the moment as well. No lightning

[68:09] strikes showing up, but it's a

[68:10] possibility at least. All right, let's

[68:11] move on to the other radar picture here.

[68:13] This goes back to the very early hours

[68:15] of the morning. You can see a huge area

[68:17] of green indicating the morning steady

[68:18] rain. And then this afternoon,

[68:20] thunderstorms really popped up over

[68:22] sections of northeastern Oregon. Those

[68:23] are finished tonight as all the showers

[68:25] are lingering west of the Cascades.

[68:27] Right now, it's 53 at Portland. Pair 50s

[68:29] for Kelso and Salem. Also 50° at Atoria,

[68:33] Newport. East of the Cascades, we're in

[68:35] the 40s for the most part. So overnight

[68:36] tonight, we'll look for the showers to

[68:38] continue mainly west of the Cascades.

[68:40] Lows will be in the 40s tomorrow

[68:41] morning. east side, maybe just a stray

[68:43] shower near the mountains with lows in

[68:45] the 30s. Okay, here's what's going on on

[68:46] the satellite picture. Watch all these

[68:48] plus signs here. Those are cloud to

[68:50] ground lightning strokes. A few of them

[68:51] in Clackmus County, west of the Cascades

[68:53] as well. And we've still got more

[68:55] showers to get through tonight. Now,

[68:56] here's the good news. As we head through

[68:58] tomorrow,

[68:59] >> better way to go.
