[0:00] Hurricane Floyd. An earthquake in Taiwan
[0:03] as powerful as the one that devastated
[0:04] Turkey in the middle of the night. The
[0:07] United States is getting involved in a
[0:09] South American civil war again because
[0:11] of the market for heroin and cocaine
[0:14] here. We'll take a closer look and we'll
[0:16] go to the only place in the country that
[0:18] we know of where they are racing in
[0:21] reverse.
[0:27] From ABC News World Headquarters in New
[0:30] York, [music]
[0:32] this is World News Tonight with Peter
[0:34] Jennings.
[0:34] >> Good evening and welcome to a special
[0:36] Northwest edition of World News Tonight
[0:37] here on Channel 2. On the other side of
[0:39] the country, the story is still too much
[0:41] water, too many rivers, too many hogs,
[0:45] so many people without power. Such a
[0:47] surprise in many ways. The story this
[0:49] Monday of North Carolina, the state that
[0:52] really paid for Hurricane Floyd. 1500
[0:55] people are still stranded because among
[0:57] other things 295 roads are closed. This
[1:00] in the eastern part of the state alone.
[1:03] Thousands of people are still in
[1:04] shelters. More than 30 have died as a
[1:07] result of the storm. 47,000 still have
[1:09] no power. 33,000 no phone. Take a look
[1:13] at a map which just shows the rivers,
[1:15] the noose, the tar, the swamp creek, the
[1:17] Kashai, the lumber, Cape Fear. Hundreds
[1:19] of millions of gallons pouring down from
[1:22] the Appalachian, drowning towns as they
[1:25] go. The president was there today. TV
[1:27] doesn't do it justice, he said. Our
[1:29] first reporter is from ABC's Rebecca
[1:31] Chase.
[1:33] >> Day five
[1:35] and water is still everywhere. 23
[1:38] counties, hundreds of miles of roads
[1:42] still impass
