[3:38] That's just a preview of what you'll see

[3:40] tonight on the edge. But we begin a half

[3:42] a world away, Fox 12 has partnered with

[3:44] salemnews.com to bring you stories from

[3:46] the front sent back to us through an

[3:48] internet connection. Tonight, far away

[3:50] from his home in Salem, reporter Tim

[3:51] King travels to Kabell, Afghanistan to

[3:54] show us how Oregonians are making a big

[3:56] difference in a war torn country.

[4:00] The military base at Kbell, Afghanistan,

[4:03] Camp Phoenix, will be a central area

[4:05] during my time here and for many members

[4:07] of the Oregon National Guard, a

[4:08] permanent duty station. Two of the

[4:10] soldiers I travel to the M East with are

[4:12] officers attached to the Jag Corps.

[4:14] Captain Shawn Oday and First Lieutenant

[4:16] Nick Pollson will serve an instrumental

[4:18] role in the legal operations of the 41st

[4:20] Combat Brigade. I'll be uh trial

[4:22] counsel. So, uh whenever somebody messes

[4:25] up, does something they probably

[4:27] shouldn't have done, uh I'll be the uh

[4:29] lawyer that helps the commander through

[4:31] the uh military justice process.

[4:34] >> OD says soldiers who violate the law are

[4:36] an extreme minority, but the army still

[4:38] must maintain guidelines and policies to

[4:41] ensure that the mission is successful

[4:42] and legal. Captain OD will also be

[4:44] responsible for giving legal advice to

[4:46] commanders in their course of

[4:47] operations. He says that aspect will be

[4:49] very similar to his role in Salem where

[4:51] he frequently gives legal advice to

[4:53] members of the city council.

[4:54] >> It's remarkable how much my city job as

[4:58] the deputy city attorney is uh similar

[5:00] to what I do here for the military.

[5:03] >> Portland attorney Nick Pollson also

[5:05] assists the military with the experience

[5:06] of his legal career. But he says his

[5:08] biggest hope is to help the Afghan

[5:10] people. understanding that Afghanistan's

[5:12] been at war for over 25 years and has

[5:14] been devastated and if we can help them

[5:17] uh then I just think it's a worth really

[5:19] worthwhile effort.

[5:19] >> And while OD and Pollson make sure the

[5:21] rules are followed, other individuals

[5:23] like Thomas Slaughter are there to

[5:25] ensure that the overall education

[5:26] process for soldiers is open and

[5:28] ongoing.

[5:29] >> I know there was that spat a while with

[5:32] Carrie's comment about the soldiers

[5:33] being uneducated, but I can tell you

[5:35] that we've got soldiers out here that

[5:37] are working on master's degrees. We got

[5:39] soldiers out here that working on their

[5:40] bachelors and associates degrees.

[5:42] >> Slaughter says that in his opinion,

[5:44] those who serve in the military are

[5:46] frequently more worldly and educated

[5:48] than their civilian counterparts. And

[5:50] while that is a big help for the future,

[5:52] it is especially helpful for them now at

[5:54] Camp Phoenix in Kabell, Afghanistan. Tim

[5:56] King, Fox 12 News.

[5:58] >> And if you'd like to see more stories

[6:00] from the front, check out salemnews.com

[6:02] or kptv.com.

[6:07] If you're going to bed with a full

[6:08] stomach tonight, you need to know

[6:10] exactly what's behind the feeling. And

[6:12] it's more than just what you ate.

[6:14] Tonight, what you need to know before

[6:15] you load up on leftovers tomorrow.

[6:18] >> So, you ready?

[6:19] >> The turkey isn't the only thing stuffed

[6:21] on Thanksgiving.

[6:22] >> Well, often times we feel so full after

[6:24] a Thanksgiving dinner because it has

[6:26] more to do with how much we've put on

[6:28] our plate than what we've actually put

[6:30] on our plate.

[6:31] >> Besides watching portion size, it's

[6:33] recommended you cut down on what you eat

[6:35] before the meal. Avoid the nuts, the

[6:37] cheese and crackers, and prepare

[6:39] yourself for the big feasting set.

[6:41] >> When the plates are empty, you're not

[6:42] just full, but often tired.

[6:44] >> Well, people have long blamed

[6:46] tryptophane, an amino acid concentrated

[6:49] in turkey, on that sleepy feeling that

[6:51] we often get after a large turkey

[6:53] dinner. And it may have more to do with

[6:55] the blood traveling from your brain to

[6:57] your stomach to help digest a rich,

[7:00] calorically dense meal instead. A long,

[7:03] slow walk after the meal will start

[7:05] burning some calories and may help fight

[7:07] the downside of a large holiday feast.

[7:10] And here's something to make you cringe.

[7:12] The average Thanksgiving meal is about

[7:14] 3,000 calories. What does it take to

[7:16] burn that off? Well, you'd need to ride

[7:17] a bike for about 6 hours at a moderate

[7:20] effort. Before you eat any Thanksgiving

[7:22] leftovers, you need to know that could

[7:25] that they could make you sick. Doctors

[7:27] say many people get food poisoning from

[7:28] turkey that was left out too long or

[7:31] wasn't chilled thoroughly. To stop

[7:32] bacterial growth, experts say you should

[7:34] remember these numbers. 224.

[7:37] Move food from the oven to the table to

[7:39] the refrigerator in 2 hours or less.

[7:41] Refrigerate food in 2in layers to speed

[7:44] up the chilling process and eat

[7:46] leftovers in 4 days or less. Turns out

[7:50] you actually can work yourself to death.

[7:52] A new study says people who suffer from

[7:54] job burnout are more prone to develop

[7:56] type 2 diabetes. Israeli scientists

[7:58] looked at nearly 700 middle-aged men in

[8:00] the workplace. They found that high

[8:02] levels of stress can disrupt a person's

[8:04] ability to process glucose. Experts say

[8:06] some of the symptoms of chronic job

[8:08] burnout include emotional exhaustion,

[8:10] physical fatigue, and mental weariness.

[8:16] Hollywood is hoping to create some buzz

[8:17] with this year's holiday flicks. If

[8:19] you're looking for something serious,

[8:21] movie critics suggest checking out Matt

[8:22] Damon's drama The Good Sheeperd or

[8:24] Bobby, which follows Robert Kennedy's

[8:26] assassination. On the lighter side, Deck

[8:28] the Halls is now in theaters. And don't

[8:30] forget about Borat, which is still

[8:32] playing. For the action lovers, you may

[8:34] want to try Casino Royale or Blood

[8:37] Diamond. We take you now to the edge

[8:39] with a look at tonight's viral video.

[8:41] That's the most shared video clip on the

[8:43] web, passed on through email or instant

[8:45] messenger. Tonight, a holiday

[8:47] appropriate clip. Adam Sandler's

[8:49] Thanksgiving Song.

[8:51] >> Turkey turkey turkey turkey. I eat the

[8:54] turkey and I take a nap.

[8:58] Thanksgiving

[9:01] is a special night.

[12:15] >> Hypnos, the new hypnotizing fragrance.

[12:21] >> Only one day,

[12:24] a sunny day. I saw you someday. Maybe

[12:28] today.

[12:37] Lancome,

[12:39] your gift with any 2750 Lancome

[12:42] purchase. Only at Macy's. Way to shop.

[12:49] Welcome back. Till this year, Turkey Day

[12:51] has been downright miserable for

[12:53] Portland's Joey Harrington. But then he

[12:55] left Detroit. Life is good again. It got

[12:57] a lot better for the former Duck when he

[12:59] went back to Detroit today and dissected

[13:01] his former teammates for three

[13:02] touchdowns. That one to Randy Mcichael

[13:05] and then two more to Marty Booker. The

[13:07] last one made it 24-10 here. They win

[13:10] their fourth straight 27 to 10. And Joey

[13:13] walks away feeling like a million bucks.

[13:16] >> When I came back in onto that field, I

[13:18] definitely remember what had happened

[13:18] over the last four years. And

[13:21] >> I'll tell you what, it felt good to walk

[13:23] off a winner. It's not payback. It's

[13:25] just

[13:26] >> it just feels nice

[13:28] >> because that, you know, no matter what,

[13:30] no matter what happens, um,

[13:34] >> you know, I played the very first game

[13:35] at Ford Field here. I played against

[13:37] Brett Favre and for four years, I poured

[13:39] my heart out in there.

[13:41] >> Well, another quarterback had a

[13:42] memorable day. Tony Romo ties a Dallas

[13:45] team record when he throws five

[13:47] touchdown passes against Tampa Bay.

[13:49] Mighty efficient also. He threw 29

[13:51] passes, completed 22 of them for over

[13:53] 300 yards. I don't even need to tell you

[13:55] Dallas won this one 38-10. And a rare

[13:58] third game today in Kansas City where

[14:00] the Broncos failed to get it done

[14:01] against the Chiefs. Jake Plamer going to

[14:03] be picked off by Tai Law. Well, Trent

[14:06] Green didn't have a great game either

[14:07] for Kansas City, but he didn't need to.

[14:09] That man, NFL rushing leader Larry

[14:11] Johnson, rolled up 157 yards on the

[14:13] ground, helping his Chiefs beat Denver

[14:15] 19-10. Hey, there will be a record crowd

[14:17] at Reer Stadium when the Ducks and

[14:19] Beavers knock heads in tomorrow's Civil

[14:20] War game. By Monday, tickets had sold

[14:22] out for the first time in the venue's

[14:24] current capacity of 43,300.

[14:27] The Beavers are slight favorites, about

[14:29] three points on their home turf, where

[14:31] they've won the last four games. A win

[14:33] tomorrow would give OSU a strong case to

[14:35] play in the Sun Bowl, but a Ducks win

[14:37] could possibly generate a four-way tie

[14:39] for third place in the Pack 10.

[14:41] If we were to come out on top this this

[14:43] Friday, it would erase all the negatives

[14:45] that happened and it would be a positive

[14:46] light on the season. So, it would be a

[14:47] big deal for not just this team, but for

[14:49] the for the whole, you know, university

[14:51] is itself.

[14:52] >> We have things that we want to

[14:54] accomplish. We want to go to a bowl

[14:55] game, all that stuff. But, uh, it's very

[14:57] important that we, uh, state clearly

[15:00] that one of our goals is that we beat

[15:02] the Ducks.

[15:03] >> Beat the Ducks, beat the Beavers.

[15:04] Kickoff 12:30.

[15:06] >> All right. And of course, big crowds

[15:07] expected if you're driving down to the

[15:08] game. Take it easy. We'll see you

[15:09] tomorrow night. Have a great uh have a

[15:10] great night everybody. Good night.

[15:23] >> The insiders Thanksgiving with the

[15:25] stars. Lost star photos and the

[15:27] 30-year-old virgin. Next Insider

[15:29] >> tonight at 11:30 on Fox 12 Oregon. What

[15:32] happens when the man next door gets to

[15:35] be the man upstairs?

[15:37] Bruce Almighty. Friday at 8 on Fox 12

[15:40] Oregon.
