[0:03] A US jet shoots down an Iraqi plane in
[0:05] the no-fly zone over southern Iraq and
[0:08] the debate intensifies over the pardons
[0:11] for Casper Weinberger and five other
[0:13] Iran contra figures.
[0:17] This is the CBS Evening News.
[0:24] Good evening, I'm Connie Chun. An
[0:26] American fighter jet shot down an Iraqi
[0:28] plane over southern Iraq today and Iraq
[0:31] quickly threatened to respond but
[0:33] didn't. The incident occurred inside the
[0:36] nofly zone declared by the US, Britain,
[0:38] and France last summer. Pentagon
[0:40] correspondent David Martin has more on
[0:42] the story.
[0:43] >> Two Iraqi jets came about 20 m south of
[0:46] the 32nd parallel, the line which marks

[0:50] southern Iraq. Two American F-16s

[1:01] and one of the Iraqis went down. No
[1:03] parachute was seen. The other Iraqi
[1:06] plane fled north. It was over as quickly
[1:08] as it began and the president went ahead
[1:11] with a planned visit to Texas. I I've
[1:13] heard that there might be some test of
[1:15] our will here at the end of my
[1:17] presidency, but I think that those uh
[1:20] F-16s sent the message pretty clearly.
[1:23] The no-fly zone over southern Iraq was
[1:25] created by the United Nations in August
[1:27] to protect the Marsh Arabs from attacks
[1:29] by Iraq's air force. Until today, the
[1:32] Iraqi Air Force had not attempted any
[1:34] serious violations of the no-fly zone,
[1:36] although Iraqi forces have been
[1:38] harassing UN relief efforts in northern
[1:40] Iraq by placing bombs in tru
