[0:04] Nature launches an attack on the US
[0:07] mainland.
[0:12] >> Hurricane Andrew bombs southern Florida
[0:15] with killer winds and rain.
[0:17] >> We've lost our homes.
[0:19] >> We've lost everything.
[0:21] >> The National Guard moves in to keep
[0:23] order. And now the powerful storm is
[0:26] ready to strike again.
[0:33] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather
[0:37] reporting tonight from an area just
[0:39] south of Miami. This area is the hardest
[0:43] hit so far by Hurricane Andrew. Now, the
[0:46] question is, where does the hurricane
[0:49] hit next? It hit first and hardest today
[0:53] on the east coast of Florida with winds
[0:55] that gusted up to 165 mph. Right now,
[1:00] the hurricane is in the Gulf of Mexico,
[1:02] expected to hit land again as soon as
[1:05] tomorrow night. The New Orleans area is
[1:08] one possible place for its next
[1:10] landfall. Death toll at least 12,
[1:14] including a minimum of eight dead in
[1:16] southern Florida. Too soon to total up
[1:18] the immense damage, but you can bet it
[1:20] will be in the many billions. A curfew
[1:23] is in effect in Miami and the National
[1:25] Guard's been called out. CBS News
[1:28] correspondent Bernard Goldberg was here
[1:30] in Miami with us when Andrew struck.
[1:37] It was one of the most powerful
[1:39] hurricanes of the century. Winds gusting
[1:41] to 165 m an hour. And if the image
[1:45] makers like to think of Miami as an
[1:47] American paradise, in a flash, Hurricane
[1:50] Andrew turned Miami into a paradise
[1:52] lost.
[1:59] A million people have no electricity, no
[2:01] phones, and many of them have no water.
[2:04] Streets have become obstacle courses.
[2:06] Airports were closed.
[2:09] And tonight, National Guard troops are
[2:11] on the streets
