[0:06] This is ABC's World News Tonight. Here

[0:09] for Frank Reynolds in Washington, Peter

[0:12] Jennings.

[0:13] >> Good evening. It's an appropriate day

[0:14] for someone normally based in Britain to

[0:16] begin an assignment at home. The

[0:18] Independence Day celebration across the

[0:20] country has been something of a road map

[0:22] for the nation. How far it has come in

[0:24] 207 years. There is certainly news in

[0:26] the rest of the world. We'll have, among

[0:28] other things, a report on cancelled

[0:30] meetings because the Soviet leader is

[0:31] sick again. First, and I agree, it's a

[0:34] cliche. Today, it was the stars and

[1:05] [Music]

[1:11] down home.

[1:14] And out in New Hall, California, they

[1:16] had, among other things, their own

[1:17] Statue of Liberty. In Mammoth,

[1:20] California, some people went skiing.

[1:22] When the snow melts, it'll be misery for

[1:24] others.

[1:26] In five Midwestern states, the weather

[1:28] was anything but kind. At least 12

[1:30] tornadoes have led to two deaths, at

[1:32] least 40 people injured. The fourth is

[1:34] usually more predictable. In Boston,

[1:37] salutes from the USS Constitution.

[1:41] And what would the fourth be without

[1:42] baseball? This is Chicago. The Cubs and

[1:45] the Exposone.
