[0:00] could have been US air strikes. But
[0:02] here's the point. We simply do not know
[0:04] what they were. Now, the first F15E
[0:08] fighter bombers took off from Saudi
[0:11] Arabia at 12:50 a.m. That would be Saudi
[0:14] Arabia time. That would be at 4:50
[0:18] p.m. this afternoon, Eastern Standard
[0:20] Time in the United States. The first
[0:21] F-15E fighter bombers. Now, those are
[0:24] manned fighter bombers, not to be
[0:26] confused with the cruise missiles. It's
[0:28] now uh confirmed by the US military that
[0:31] they took off around 4:50 this
[0:33] afternoon, Eastern time in the United
[0:34] States. Uh the base's chief maintenance
[0:38] officer in Saudi Arabia, Colonel Ray
[0:39] Davyy, said, and I quote, "This is
[0:42] history in the making." Now, the F-15E,
[0:46] so-called Eagle, is an attack fighter.
[0:49] It's the best uh US fighter. It's uh
[0:52] generally considered on a worldwide
[0:53] basis to be the best in the world. It
[0:55] attacks targets on the ground and in the
[0:57] air, which is to say it's capable of
[0:59] air-to-air combat and also striking
[1:01] targets on the ground. It has air-to-air
[1:03] missiles and also uh bombs. Now, let me
[1:06] pause and say that the White House has
[1:08] given us a twominute uh caution.
[1:10] Something uh of import is about to
[1:12] happen at the White House. We'll be
[1:13] covering it live for you here as part of
[1:15] our CBS News uh coverage. Uh it's clear
[1:19] war has begun uh in the Middle East. It
[1:22] is believed that US fighter bombers are
[1:24] at this moment attacking uh Iraq and
[1:27] have been for several hours now. And
[1:30] it's believed that US cruise type
[1:32] missiles also are hitting targets inside
[1:34] Iraq. Uh the Iraqi government
