[0:05] CBS Evening News

[0:08] with Dan Rather reporting from CBS News

[0:11] headquarters in New York. Good evening.

[0:14] It could be a major advance in the

[0:16] search for ways to fight, someday even

[0:18] prevent the ravages of Alzheimer's

[0:21] disease. Researchers reported today in

[0:23] the journal Science that they have

[0:25] discovered an enzyme that may trigger

[0:27] the brain destroying disease. This could

[0:30] open a whole new line of attack against

[0:32] Alzheimer's by blocking the enzyme and

[0:35] disabling the trigger. CBS's Elizabeth

[0:38] Kaledan has the facts and the prospects.

[0:42] >> For years, doctors have known that the

[0:44] brains of people with Alzheimer's

[0:46] disease gradually get clogged with

[0:48] something called amaloids. proteins that

[0:50] literally litter the brain, blocking

[0:53] neurons and erasing memories. No one

[0:56] ever knew what caused the amaloids to

[0:58] form. But today, researchers at the

[1:00] Amgen labs in California say they have

[1:03] finally figured it out.

[1:04] >> We have discovered an enzyme that plays

[1:07] a critical role in the formation of

[1:10] amaloid and this amaloid makes the

[1:13] amaloid plaques that cause Alzheimer's

[1:15] disease. Researchers believe the enzyme

[1:18] may be present in the brain long before

[1:20] any symptoms of Alzheimer's disease even

[1:22] show up. But in full-blown Alzheimer's,

[1:25] the enzyme cuts brain cell proteins and

[1:28] slices them into fragments or amaloids

[1:30] which form a toxic plaque, killing nerve

[1:33] cells in the brain. The result is that

[1:36] people like Xan White can't remember

[1:38] things, sometimes don't recognize family

[1:40] members, and gradually lose touch with

[1:42] reality. And the greatest fea
