[0:02] >> From New York, this is NBC Nightly News
[0:05] with Jane Foley substituting for Jessica
[0:08] Savage and Dick Shamp with sports.
[0:11] >> Good evening. More than 100,000 Soviet
[0:14] troops may be in Afghanistan and that
[0:16] number may still be growing. The
[0:18] estimates come from diplomatic sources
[0:20] in Pakistan who say the Soviets are
[0:23] facing fierce resistance from Muslim
[0:25] rebels throughout the country. But the
[0:27] rebels are considered no match against

[1:14] rebels who have lived and fought in them
[1:16] all their lives. Afghanistan is
[1:18] landlocked and Kabell is mountains
[1:21] surrounded by the Hindu Kush range. Much

[1:27] walled rectangles. At the airport, we
[1:30] are greeted by the sight of two Russian
[1:32] transport planes warming up on the
[1:34] runway, signs in English, long live
