[0:00] Ron. All right, take care. Thanks
[0:01] everybody. See you tomorrow. Now to CBS.
[0:07] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather
[0:10] reporting. Good evening. Those who argue
[0:12] that Panama could become the next
[0:14] Nicaragua. A massive problem for the
[0:16] United States in Central America got new
[0:18] ammunition. Tonight, the president of
[0:20] Panama is trying to fire General Manuel
[0:23] Noriega. Noriega has been in effect the
[0:25] country's military dictator. Noriega was
[0:28] a longtime favorite of the Reagan
[0:29] administration, reportedly with ties to
[0:31] Oliver North and others high up. But

[0:57] replacement. Delva said he asked Noriega
[0:59] to voluntarily resign several days ago.
[1:02] Noriega declined. The White House
[1:04] tonight said, "We believe an opportunity
[1:06] now exists for Panameanians to deal with
[1:09] the political impass which has gripped
[1:11] the country for the last 8 months." and
[1:13] to put the democratization process back
[1:15] on track. The Panameanian people count
[1:18] on our support in this effort. As much
[1:20] as the US wants Noriega out, there is
[1:22] caution here in Washington tonight
[1:24] because so far Noriega has not
[1:26] responded. State Department officials
[1:28] were informed last night t
