[0:41] homes thousands in Emergency Shelters

[0:48] Diana has slammed ashore and tonight is

[0:50] blowing itself out as it moves Inland

[0:52] early this evening forecasters

[0:54] officially downgraded Diana to a

[0:56] tropical storm but North Carolina

[0:58] governor Jim hunt said his State already

[1:00] suffered some very great damage and said

[1:02] he will ask President Reagan to declare

[1:04] it a major disaster area James McManus

[1:07] reports on the storm that changed its

[1:10] mind Diana had been wandering to the

[1:13] east but in last night's Darkness the

[1:15] big hurricane reverse course and charged

[1:18] West toward the mainland wind gusts over

[1:21] 100 mph slammed into Wilmington and the

[1:24] coastal Barrier Islands to the south on

[1:26] Carolina Beach a huge water tower

[1:29] crashed to the ground

[1:30] Diana had struck the same area a

[1:32] glancing blow Tuesday and many residents

[1:35] were shocked at her sudden return well

[1:37] we thought the storm was about open
