[0:01] Good evening. This is the CBS Evening
[0:03] News. Dan Rather reporting. There's been
[0:05] a terrible airplane tragedy in New
[0:07] Orleans. A Pan-American Airlines 727
[0:10] jetliner crashed shortly after taking
[0:12] off from New Orleans International
[0:14] Airport late today, setting several
[0:16] houses on fire. The plane had about 145
[0:20] people on board. It is said 136
[0:23] passengers plus crew. State police say
[0:26] 22 people are known dead. An airport
[0:29] spokesman said Pan-American Flight 759
[0:33] crashed 12 to 15 blocks east of the New
[0:36] Orleans airport. A fire department
[0:38] spokeswoman said the debris covers a 4
[0:40] to six block area. She said, quote, "We
[0:42] can see it from the windows. We can hear
[0:44] explosions." The Panama flight
[0:47] originated in Miami with a stop at New
[0:49] Orleans on route to Las Vegas and San
[0:51] Diego. Reuters News Service quoted
[0:54] reports from the scene saying the plane
[0:56] apparently was hit by lightning. Larry
[0:59] Pierce of WWL radio has more.

[1:16] blinding I mean a blinding rainstorm uh
[1:20] here in Kenner after the sight of the
[1:21] crash you can hardly see where you're
[1:23] going there it's hard to see also
[1:25] because of the thick black smoke that is
[1:27] pouring from the crash site and uh you
[1:30] really can't see anything nothing but
[1:31] devastation we have no reports of uh uh
[1:34] injuries at this time uh any definite
[1:37] reports But we do have uh information
[1:40] that there may be uh quite a few
[1:43] casualties as it was a Pan-American 727.
[1:48] That Pan-American 727 crashing shortly
[1:50] after takeoff in New Orleans. No
