[0:02] Neither President Clinton nor the

[0:04] Congress is blinking as the budget

[0:06] battle heads toward a Monday night

[0:07] showdown. One week after the

[0:10] assassination, Israelis mourn Yetsac

[0:12] Rabbine while police arrest a soldier

[0:15] for complicity in the plot. And

[0:17] Americans honor their fighting men and

[0:19] women on Veterans Day 1995.

[0:24] This is the CBS Evening News.

[0:30] And this is Bob Schaefer reporting. Good

[0:32] evening. The possibility that parts of

[0:34] the government will have to shut down

[0:36] Monday seem more likely than ever

[0:38] tonight. Republican leaders and the

[0:40] White House spent another day blaming

[0:42] each other for not finding a compromise

[0:44] that will allow the government to borrow

[0:46] the money it needs to keep operating.

[0:48] There were a lot of charges,

[0:50] countercharges, and name calling, but in

[0:52] the end, nothing got done. Jim Stewart

[0:54] has today's developments. I think

[0:57] >> Alice Rivlin, director of the Office of

[0:59] Management and Budget, perhaps summed it

[1:01] up best today.

[1:02] >> It seems sort of stupid to be talking

[1:03] about closing down the federal

[1:05] government. Uh closing down services

[1:08] that people really need and expect from

[1:11] their government.

[1:12] >> But that's exactly what Congress and the

[1:14] White House appear ready to do after

[1:16] another day of sniping over the budget

[1:18] ended with both sides accusing the other

[1:19] of being hard-headed. If we can't even

[1:22] talk to the president of the United

[1:23] States and we're the leaders of the

[1:24] Congress, how are we going to resolve

[1:26] this?

[1:27] >> There just doesn't seem to be um a point

[1:29] now where we can have that type of

[1:31] discussion.

[1:32] >>
