[0:15] good morning and welcome to Wednesday's
[0:18] in the word and we're excited for this
[0:20] lesson number three this week and every
[0:24] now and then people ask you questions
[0:25] about the Bible and they ask you one
[0:29] question sometimes I get is why is there
[0:32] 66 books why not 65 books why not more
[0:38] books they especially if they've come
[0:40] and they've seen the Apocrypha and other
[0:43] Bibles they question why don't we have
[0:46] those books in our Bible and so today we
[0:49] want to talk about that a little bit why
[0:51] is 66 books it's called the Canon now
[0:54] not the Canon you'd find on a pirate
[0:56] ship
[0:56] but the Canon of Scripture see a in in
[1:00] oh in and so we're going to look at that
[1:03] today but before we do let me remind you
[1:06] about a few verses in Scripture the
[1:07] Bible says in 2nd Timothy 3:16 and 17
[1:12] that all Scripture is given by
[1:14] inspiration of God and is profitable for
[1:17] doctrine for reproof for correction for
[1:20] instruction in righteousness that the
[1:22] man of God may be perfect throughly
[1:23] furnished unto all good works
[1:26] in Psalm 1 1989 the Bible tells us this
[1:30] it says for ever O Lord thy word is
[1:34] settled in heaven forever O Lord thy
[1:37] word is settled in heaven and also in
[1:39] 2nd Peter chapter number 1 verse number
[1:42] 21 the Bible tells us is for this
[1:44] prophecy came not in old time by the
[1:47] will of man but holy men of God spake as
[1:50] they were moved by the Holy Ghost and so
[1:53] that those are the three passages of
[1:55] Scripture help kind of set the stage for
[1:59] what we're going to be talking about
[2:00] this morning so why is 66 books the word
[2:04] chanting the genuine books of the Holy
[2:07] Scriptures called the sacred Canon or
[2:11] the general rule of moral and religious
[2:13] duty given by inspiration that's one of
[2:15] the things that that word Canon means so
[2:19] there was some tests that were applied
[2:21] in order to see if a certain writing was
[2:25] to be taken as part of the
[2:28] so here's some test they use for the Old
[2:30] Testament these are specific tests to
[2:32] consider the canonicity may be
[2:34] recognized number one did the book
[2:37] indicate God was speaking through the
[2:40] writer and that it was considered
[2:42] authoritative now we're going to compare
[2:45] some references letter a God was
[2:48] speaking through the human author in
[2:51] Exodus chapter 20 verse number one we
[2:54] find that to be for certain in Joshua
[2:57] chapter one verse number one will turn
[3:00] there this morning Joshua chapter number
[3:03] one verse number one and will reference
[3:06] that as well this morning let's look at
[3:09] Joshua 1:1 now after the death of Moses
[3:13] the servant of the Lord it came to pass
[3:15] that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son
[3:18] of nun Moses ministers saying so again
[3:21] God speaking through the human author
[3:25] Isaiah chapter two verse one
[3:28] not only that was it was God speaking
[3:31] through the human author but let her be
[3:33] that the books were authoritative now
[3:36] there's gonna be some listing in the
[3:38] notes of selection so in the description
[3:41] below this video are some notes that
[3:43] I'll have all of the references that
[3:45] we're using today I don't have time in a
[3:49] 15-minute video to go to every one of
[3:51] these but we just wanted to give you
[3:53] some references one was Joshua chapter 1
[3:56] verses 7 and 8 the Bible says only be
[3:59] thou strong and very courageous that
[4:01] thou madest observe to do according to
[4:04] all the law which Moses my servant
[4:06] commanded thee turn not from it to the
[4:09] right hand or to the left
[4:11] though thou may prosper with it so ever
[4:13] thou goest and then verse number 8 this
[4:16] book of the law and I depart out of thy
[4:17] mouth without shall meditate therein day
[4:20] and night that thou mayst observe to do
[4:22] according to all that is written therein
[4:24] for then thou shalt make that way
[4:26] prosperous and then thou shalt have good
[4:29] success but there's a whole listing of
[4:31] verses in Joshua and first Kings second
[4:34] Kings Ezra Nehemiah Daniel Malachi note
[4:38] also that Joshua's 6:26 is come
[4:41] paired with first King 1634 and there's
[4:45] other verses that are laid out in your
[4:46] notes for you today that are some
[4:48] comparisons and let me encourage you to
[4:50] look these verses over look them up and
[4:53] understand what their meaning secondly
[4:56] not only was it to be authoritative and
[4:58] that God was speaking to the author
[5:00] second was the human author recognized
[5:03] as a spokesman of God that is was he a
[5:07] prophet or did he have a prophetic gift
[5:09] now some verses to compares Deuteronomy
[5:12] 18 18 Deuteronomy 31 24 through 26 first
[5:17] samuel 10:25 and Nehemiah 8 3 so you
[5:22] have did God speak through the writer
[5:24] was it considered authoritative was a
[5:27] human offer a recognized spokesman for
[5:30] God at number 3 was the book
[5:32] historically accurate did it reflect a
[5:35] record of actual facts so that was some
[5:40] test for the Old Testament now here's
[5:42] some New Testament evidence for the
[5:45] canonicity of the Old Testament so New
[5:49] Testament evidence of Old Testament
[5:53] truth number one Old Testament
[5:55] quotations in the New Testament did you
[5:58] know that there are some 250 quotes from
[6:02] the Old Testament in the New Testament
[6:04] do you want to know how many are found
[6:07] in the Apocrypha that are found in the
[6:11] New Testament 0 all the Old Testament
[6:16] books are quoted in the New Testament
[6:19] except for 3 Esther Ecclesiastes and
[6:24] Song of Solomon all the other 36 books
[6:29] in the Old Testament are quoted in the
[6:33] New Testament have you ever stopped to
[6:35] consider that 250 times that the other
[6:39] 36 books were mentioned secondly Old
[6:42] Testament quotations by Jesus himself in
[6:45] Matthew 5:17 to 18 the Lord declared
[6:49] that the law and the prophets a
[6:52] reference that includes all of the Old
[6:54] Testament and
[6:55] let's go there Matthew chapter 5 this
[6:58] morning and verses number 17 and 18
[7:02] Matthew chapter number five verses 17
[7:05] and 18 this is what was said think not
[7:08] that I am come to destroy the law or the
[7:10] prophets
[7:11] I am not come to destroy but to fulfil
[7:14] for verily I say unto you till heaven
[7:16] and earth shall pass away one jot or one
[7:19] tittle shall in no wise pass from the
[7:21] law till all be fulfilled Jesus Christ
[7:25] referencing the law and the prophets
[7:28] this includes all of the Old Testament
[7:31] that's what was summarized by the law
[7:33] verse 18 would be fulfilled this
[7:36] declared it was therefore God's
[7:38] authority t'v word Christ's statement in
[7:41] Matthew 23 verse 35 about the blood of
[7:45] abel to the blood of zechariah clearly
[7:48] define what jesus viewed as the old
[7:51] testament so let's go there Matthew 23
[7:54] verse number 35 Matthew 23 verse number
[7:59] 35 the Bible says that upon you may come
[8:06] all the righteous blood shed upon the
[8:09] Earth from the blood of the righteous
[8:11] abel to the blood of Zacharias the son
[8:14] of our Caius whom he slew between the
[8:16] temple and the altar so all of those
[8:21] referencing Jesus Christ referencing
[8:24] that time frame Genesis through Malachi
[8:27] all of that consisted of the Old
[8:30] Testament and what we know as the Old
[8:33] Testament of our Bible
[8:35] so the Canon was referenced not only in
[8:38] the New Testament some 250 times but
[8:42] also quotes by Jesus Christ himself
[8:45] now it's particularly significant in the
[8:48] view of the fact that there are other
[8:50] martyrs of God's messengers recorded in
[8:54] the Apocrypha but the Lord excludes them
[8:57] suggesting he did not consider the books
[9:00] of the Apocrypha to belong in the Canon
[9:02] as with the books from Genesis to second
[9:06] Chronicles
[9:07] and so when you think about that this
[9:09] morning and here's some interesting
[9:10] thoughts you've got Jesus quoting verses
[9:14] you've got Jesus referencing the law and
[9:18] the prophets and talking about the death
[9:20] of Abel all the way through Zacharias
[9:23] but never one time mentioning four
[9:26] writings that are accrued to be in the
[9:30] Apocrypha and so we find Jesus as the
[9:33] test now if anybody's going to tell us
[9:35] what the word is it ought to be the one
[9:39] that we find in John chapter one verse
[9:42] number one saying in the beginning was
[9:44] the word and the Word was with God and
[9:47] the Word was God and in John 1:14 when
[9:50] it tells us that the word became flesh
[9:52] and dwelt among us and we beheld as
[9:55] Laurie has the only begotten of the
[9:56] Father full of grace and truth if
[9:59] anybody's going to speak on what the
[10:00] word is it is the word who is Christ
[10:04] Jesus now here's some tests for the New
[10:07] Testament the question naturally arises
[10:10] what process and by what means did the
[10:14] early church recognize which books were
[10:17] canticle and which books were not now
[10:21] the following summarizes not in great
[10:24] detail summarizes the test use to
[10:28] discern which books were to be part of
[10:30] the new testament number one
[10:33] authentication on the divine side we
[10:36] know that as the word inspiration
[10:39] I remember we talked about that in
[10:40] second Timothy all Scripture is given by
[10:42] inspiration did the book give eternal
[10:45] evidence or internal evidence use me of
[10:49] inspiration of God breathed was it a
[10:53] proper spiritual character did it edify
[10:56] the church was it doctrinally accurate
[11:01] the Apocrypha and the pseudo pitted
[11:04] enfagrow were rejected as a result of
[11:07] they did not meet this test so when you
[11:09] hold up the Apocrypha and the other
[11:11] writings and you compare them to what we
[11:14] find in the twenty-seven books of our
[11:16] New Testament you'll discover some
[11:19] doctrinal
[11:20] Agreements you'll discover some problems
[11:23] that detain and the historical facts
[11:26] you'll discover a lot of things that you
[11:28] and I would have a conclusive decision
[11:30] to say that's not from God so the book
[11:36] should bear evidence of high moral and
[11:39] spiritual values that would reflect the
[11:43] work of a holy spirit working on a man
[11:46] as we mentioned in second Peter that
[11:49] holy men of God spake as they were moved
[11:52] by the Holy Ghost there are a lot of
[11:56] people who write but they're not
[11:58] necessarily moved by the Holy Ghost -
[12:01] right they may write because they want
[12:03] to sell a book or they may write because
[12:05] they've got a story to tell but not
[12:08] because the Holy Spirit of God moved in
[12:10] the Bible is not like any other book it
[12:13] is a living breathing book that was
[12:15] inspired by cohn breathed on by the Holy
[12:18] Spirit and written for you and I for our
[12:22] admonition instructions and in
[12:25] righteousness second thing about the New
[12:28] Testament was the authentication on the
[12:30] human side there were three issues that
[12:33] were important number one was the author
[12:35] and apostle or did he have the
[12:38] endorsement of an apostle so you think
[12:40] about all the New Testament books from
[12:43] Matthew all the way to Revelation they
[12:46] wanted to know was it an apostle or was
[12:49] it someone that had an apostle would
[12:51] endorse mark now we know he wrote the
[12:54] Gospel of Mark but do you know that he
[12:57] did that under the endorsement of Peter
[13:00] Luke was a close associate of the
[13:03] Apostle Paul who wrote under the
[13:05] endorsement of the Apostle Paul's
[13:07] authority so there's Matthew and Mark
[13:11] Mark and Luke writing their books
[13:13] because of the apostle authority that
[13:16] was there in the endorsement secondly
[13:20] universal acceptance was another key
[13:22] factor on the whole was the book
[13:25] accepted by the church at large the
[13:28] recognition given a particular book by
[13:30] the church was important by this
[13:33] standard
[13:34] number of books were rejected there were
[13:37] some books that enjoyed an acceptance by
[13:40] a few but were later dropped for lack of
[13:43] universal acceptance then there were a
[13:46] few books that some questioned because
[13:48] of doubts about the author not the
[13:51] content but we're later accepted because
[13:54] the majority accepted them and so the
[13:58] universal acceptance is so when you pick
[14:01] up your Bible and you find there 66
[14:03] books it's not on accident it's not
[14:06] there you needed a number 66 it wasn't
[14:10] they wanted 65 or 70 they didn't need a
[14:13] nice round number it was that all
[14:16] scripture now remember we need to go
[14:18] back to that reference in Psalms chapter
[14:20] 119 that said forever O Lord thy word is
[14:25] settled in heaven before it was taken
[14:29] and ink put to paper or we should say
[14:32] animal skins during that time before the
[14:36] ink touched the paper it was already
[14:38] settled in heaven what would be written
[14:41] and pinned now God had a plan and God
[14:45] used mankind to bring about his plan and
[14:50] God spoke to us through his word it is
[14:55] his word he spoke the Holy Spirit of God
[14:59] moved upon men and they wrote the words
[15:02] that God directed them to write now it
[15:06] is amazing as you study the Bible you
[15:08] find some stylistic writings it's
[15:12] amazing to me the words God uses to
[15:15] speak to us through his word but he uses
[15:18] styles of the writer to express it in
[15:21] such a way now when it comes to stylings
[15:24] let me give you an illustration I can
[15:27] say something in a certain way and my
[15:29] wife could say the same thing in a
[15:32] different way and but we get the same
[15:35] message across see the stylist of the
[15:38] speaker or the stylist of the writer
[15:41] does not affect the message or affects
[15:44] the delivery but not the message
[15:47] the message is the same the delivery is
[15:50] a little bit different now
[15:52] you've heard me preach before and
[15:53] sometimes I'm a little bit loud and
[15:56] sometimes I'm a little bit soft but
[15:58] overall I tried my best to
[16:01] enthusiastically deliver the Word of God
[16:03] but if a preacher is only soft and he's
[16:06] not loud it doesn't make him a poor
[16:09] preacher
[16:09] it doesn't make him a poor communicator
[16:12] because the message of the word of God
[16:15] is what is important the stylistic
[16:18] stylings of the speaker can either add
[16:21] or sometimes it can distract but at or
[16:24] distracted to the delivering of the
[16:26] message I believe it is important for
[16:29] you and I to understand the 66 books
[16:31] that are contained for us in the Canon
[16:34] of Scripture inside the cover of your
[16:36] Bible was planned by God before Inc ever
[16:42] touched the paper God had a plan for it
[16:45] and so today you can know with
[16:49] confidence why do I have 66 books in my
[16:52] Bible because that's the way God wanted
[16:55] it done that's the way God directed men
[16:58] to write that's the way that God
[17:01] preserved it now I'm looking forward to
[17:03] next week as we take a journey and we go
[17:07] from the original languages to the 1611
[17:10] version of the Bible I want to take you
[17:13] on a historical journey and I'm looking
[17:15] forward to it next week but today
[17:17] remember this your Bible was written by
[17:22] God planned by God preserved by God for
[17:28] you this has been a great time in the
[17:30] Wednesday's in the word and we look
[17:32] forward to seeing you next time have a
[17:34] great day and hopefully we'll see you
[17:36] tonight at church god bless
