[0:31] This is the CBS Evening News with Dan

[0:34] Rather reporting from CBS News

[0:37] headquarters in New York.

[0:39] >> Good evening. A potentially very

[0:41] dangerous hurricane is heading for the

[0:43] US Gulf Coast and the first major

[0:45] hurricane strike on the US mainland in

[0:47] two years. Major in this case could mean

[0:50] a category three or four hurricane on a

[0:54] scale of five. entering the Gulf of

[0:56] Mexico tonight after a nasty swipe at

[0:58] Cuba. Hurricane Lily is already a

[1:01] category two, which is to say winds over

[1:03] 100 miles an hour. And it's going to get

[1:06] stronger before landfall, probably on

[1:08] Thursday somewhere along the Texas

[1:10] Louisiana coast is the most popular

[1:12] guess. A destructive tidal surge, what

[1:15] used to be called a tidal wave on the

[1:17] coast, is possible before the hurricane,

[1:20] pushes inland toward Arkansas. This

[1:22] storm may bring heavy rain all the way

[1:24] up to the northeast. It did that and

[1:26] more in Cuba. CBS's Bobby Harley is

[1:29] there.

[1:32] >> Hurricane Lily ra the entire southern

[1:34] coast of Cuba with wind gusts of more

[1:36] than 100 miles an hour and rain that

[1:39] filled the streets so quickly it

[1:40] stranded people, making rescues by

[1:42] helicopter the only way out.

[1:49] Nearly 200,000 people crowded into

[1:51] shelter
