[0:02] New signs that the recession may be
[0:04] bottoming out and the disasters that
[0:07] might have been. Shuttles flying with
[0:09] defective parts.
[0:12] This is the CBS Evening News, Dan Rather
[0:15] [music] reporting. Good evening. The
[0:16] United States Supreme Court handed down
[0:18] a decision today that has the
[0:20] anti-abortion forces cheering. CBS News
[0:23] law correspondent Rita Braver has more
[0:25] about this decision and its impact.
[0:29] There was dismay at places like the Hub
[0:31] clinic in the South Bronx that serve
[0:33] mostly poor women. Dismay that the US
[0:36] Supreme Court upheld the Reagan-Bush
[0:38] policy barring federally funded family
[0:41] planning clinics like this one from
[0:43] giving any information about abortion.
[0:46] Poor people will have no choices. All
[0:48] choices are being removed from them
[0:51] uh because they won't be able to have

[0:57] regardless of her status. And that's all
[0:59] right. I don't see why they should take
[1:01] that away from them.
[1:02] But anti-abortion groups were elated.
[1:05] Well, congratulations.
[1:07] Yes, it's very good. It's very good.
[1:09] Family planning funds should not be used
[1:11] for abortion-related services and this
[1:14] builds the necessary wall of wall of
[1:16] separation between what really should be
[1:18] family planning and what really happens
[1:21] to be abortion. The Supreme Court
[1:23] rejected arguments that the policy
[1:25] violates the free speech rights of
[1:27] doctors to talk honestly with their
[1:29] patients or interferes with a woman's
[1:31] basic right to choose abortion. Writing
[1:34] for the five-member majority, Chief
[1:36] Justice William Rehnquist
