[0:00] Matthews tonight. I'm in Kansas City,
[0:02] Missouri. And we'll preview the battle
[0:03] here between President Bush and John
[0:05] Kerry in a moment. But first, the top
[0:07] Marine commander in Iraq says US forces
[0:09] would take the town of Fallujah within
[0:10] days if a surgeons don't turn in their
[0:12] weapons immediately. NBC's Richard Angel
[0:15] is in Baghdad. Richard, are we winning
[0:18] over there or are we getting bogged
[0:19] down? What's the story in Iraq?
[0:23] >> I think it's a difficult question to
[0:24] answer, Chris. it. We were certainly
[0:26] winning militarily in Fallujah. For
[0:29] example, there have been this truce or a
[0:31] ceasefire that hasn't looked very much
[0:33] like a ceasefire at all. There have been
[0:35] some pretty serious gun battles in the
[0:37] city, but the Marines have essentially
[0:39] tied their own hands there. They said
[0:41] they will not conduct major offensive
[0:43] operations like they did several weeks
[0:45] ago. Uh because they were they're trying
[0:47] to let this ceasefire play itself out.
[0:50] They've asked for people to uh the
[0:52] insurgents in the city to turn in their
[0:54] heavy weapons. Today they received a few
[0:56] of those weapons, about a truckload, but
[0:58] they said it was uh the Marines said it
[1:00] was just junk. These weren't the the
[1:02] real weapons that the uh the militants
[1:03] were fighting with. And the Marine
[1:05] commander said unless the uh the
[1:07] militants make good on the terms of the
[1:09] truce, there's going to be another
[1:10] allout assault in the city. Uh on on the
[1:13] other front to answer the other part of
[1:14] your question, there is a uh serious
[1:17] problems with the hearts and minds
