[0:01] Dan Richard Lelesinger. As news of the
[0:04] air crash spread this morning, everyone
[0:06] asked the same question. Was it more
[0:08] terrorism or an accident? Correspondent
[0:11] Bob or in Washington covers aviation for
[0:13] CBS News and has the latest on the
[0:16] various theories, which is all anyone
[0:18] really has at the moment. Bob Dan,
[0:20] investigators frankly are stunned by
[0:22] what they found at the crash scene.
[0:24] Parts of American Airlines Flight 587
[0:26] have been scattered over a much wider
[0:28] area than they first thought, raising
[0:30] now the possibility of a large in-flight
[0:32] explosion that may have resulted from an
[0:34] engine problem or something more
[0:36] sinister. Late today, salvage crews
[0:39] pulled a large, nearly intact section of
[0:41] the jet's tail from Jamaica Bay, several
[0:43] blocks away from the main crash crater.
[0:46] That is strong evidence that the Airbus
[0:47] A300 began breaking up before the jet
[0:50] hit the ground. Veteran crash experts
[0:52] say it would likely take a sizable
[0:54] explosion to sever the tail. There is
[0:57] some evidence that one of the plane's
[0:58] engines did explode in flight, but
[1:00] investigators are at a loss to explain
[1:02] how that could have damaged the rear of
[1:04] the airplane. One source told CBS News,
[1:07] "It's bizarre. It is the last thing I
[1:09] would have expected." The Airbus A300
[1:12] took off from New York's JFK airport at
[1:15] 9:14 bound for the Dominican Republic.
[1:18] Something went wrong immediately because
[1:20] less than a minute and a half later at
[1:22] 96001, radar contact was lost. There
[1:25] were no distress calls from the pilots.
[1:28] The plane only reached 2,800 ft and a
