[0:03] The Pentagon prepares for another round
[0:05] of military base closings and a star
[0:08] witness for OJ Simpson will testify out
[0:11] of turn on Monday.
[0:13] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:21] and this is Bob Schaefer reporting. Good
[0:22] evening. Well, it won't be official
[0:24] until next week, but the list of
[0:26] military bases that the Clinton
[0:28] administration is planning to close is
[0:30] beginning to leak out. When a base
[0:31] closes, it's always bad news for the
[0:33] local economy. So, for many communities
[0:36] this weekend, the good news is the list
[0:38] of bases being closed is shorter than
[0:40] expected, but there will be some fairly
[0:42] significant closings. And Jim Stewart
[0:45] has our report.
[0:47] For the Long Beach, California Naval
[0:48] Shipyard, this latest round of military
[0:50] base closures boils down to simple
[0:52] mathematics. The Navy has more places to
[0:55] repair ships than it has ships. So, Long
[0:58] Beach will close. And if the Pentagon
[1:00] has its way, so will facilities in 14
[1:02] other states, including an Army depot in
[1:05] Texana, Fitz Simmons Hospital in
[1:07] Colorado, and the Meridian, Mississippi
[1:09] Naval Air Station, home to 3,200
[1:11] employees. Although the cuts are less
[1:13] severe than expected, some home state
[1:16] politicians are already fuming. And
[1:17] >> if you analyze the economic impact of
[1:20] base closure thus far, it's $7 billion
[1:23] in California. So, it's an enormous uh
[1:26] problem for us.
[1:28] >> Secretary of Defense William Perry is
[1:30] fine-tuning the list this weekend and is
[1:31] expected to release it Tuesday.
[1:34] Massachusetts stands to lose two bases
[1:36] and its senators are scratching for ways
[1:38] to save them
