[0:03] With American troops on patrol, more
[0:05] questions about the US mission in Haiti
[0:07] and Operation Gatekeeper, a new
[0:10] high-tech effort to block illegal
[0:12] immigration into California.
[0:15] This is the CBS Evening News.
[0:22] And good evening. I'm Deborah Norville
[0:23] reporting. More than a thousand US
[0:25] Marines pulled out of Haiti today as
[0:27] expected. American military continue
[0:30] patrolling for weapons, though it's
[0:32] believed they're seizing only a fraction
[0:33] of what's actually there. Meantime,
[0:36] questions continue about the US mission
[0:38] in Haiti. Bob Simon is in Porta Prince.

[1:02] our vehicles, etc., etc. Pressure is
[1:04] mounting on the US command from the ASDE
[1:07] camp and from the Clinton administration
[1:09] to make it stop. The logical next move
[1:12] for the Americans could be to disarm or
[1:14] take out the paramilitary members of
[1:16] FRAP, the right-wing organization
[1:19] responsible for the worst atrocities.
[1:22] This is the FRAP headquarters in Porto
[1:23] Prince. It's where last Friday's terror
[1:25] came from. But today, it looks more like
[1:28] a social club than anything else. And if
[1:30] US troops attack the place, as many here
[1:32] expect them to, it's unlikely that
[1:34] they'll find very much.
[1:37] US troops acting on a tip staged a
[1:39] fullcourt raid on a ware
