[0:20] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather
[0:22] reporting. Good evening. This is the day
[0:24] they tore down the statue of the KGB. A
[0:27] new beginning for Mikuel Gorbachoff and
[0:29] the Soviet Union. Gorbachoff's back and
[0:31] cleaning some house and denouncing those
[0:33] who plotted to overthrow him.

[0:37] begins our coverage of Gorbachoff's
[0:39] retire.

[0:42] >> Ladies and gentlemen, the president of
[0:44] the Soviet Union, Mikuel Serge
[0:45] Gorbachov. Restored to power and
[0:48] returned from captivity, Mikail
[0:50] Gorbachov today admitted that the coup
[0:53] which toppled him for 72 hours was in
[0:56] part his own mistake. An act of betrayal
[0:59] by his own close aids.
[1:02] people whom I myself promoted, whom I
[1:05] believed, whom I trusted, and they
[1:09] turned out to be not only participants
[1:12] in that plot, but organizers of that
[1:16] conspiracy.
[1:17] >> Returning early this morning from the
[1:19] vacation home where he'd been held with
[1:21] his family and security guards,
[1:23] Gorbachov said his capttors had
[1:25] surrounded his house and cut all outside
[1:27] communication. Their aim, he said, was
[1:30] to break the president, but I would have
[1:32] considered suicide rather than give in
[1:35] to their conspiracy.
[1:37] Gorbachov remembered the exact time, the
[1:39] 18th of August,
[1:42] >> 10 minutes to 5:00 p.m.,
[1:45] >> when the phone suddenly went dead, and
[1:47] he was told the delegation demanded to
[1:49] see him. They carried an ultimatum that
[1:51] he resign.
[1:55] So I said to them, you and those who
[1:58] sent you are advent
