[0:03] The Pentagon says US missiles almost
[0:05] completely destroyed the Iraqi
[0:06] intelligence headquarters in Baghdad.
[0:09] Angry Iraqis denounced the United States
[0:11] for the attack. While President
[0:13] Clinton's decision to use armed force
[0:15] win support from the Congress and the
[0:17] Allies.
[0:20] This is the CBS Evening News.
[0:27] Hello everybody, Russ Mitchell
[0:29] reporting. Good evening. More tough talk
[0:30] from the White House one day after the
[0:32] latest US attack on Baghdad. President
[0:34] Clinton called the attack a success, but
[0:36] expressed sorrow that some of the
[0:38] missiles went off course, killing at
[0:40] least eight civilians. The target, the
[0:42] Iraqi intelligence headquarters complex
[0:44] in the heart of Baghdad, was largely
[0:46] destroyed. We begin our coverage this
[0:47] evening with National Security
[0:49] Correspondent David Martin at the
[0:50] Pentagon.
[0:52] >> If you had been in Baghdad at 2:00 this
[0:54] morning, this is what you would have
[0:55] seen and heard.
[0:59] Cruise missiles launched from the Red
[1:01] Sea and Persian Gulf slammed into the
[1:03] headquarters of the Iraqi intelligence
[1:04] service. If you were unlucky enough to
[1:07] live in a neighborhood next to the
[1:08] headquarters, this is what you would
[1:10] have found when the sun came up. Some of
[1:12] the crews missiles had gone astray.
[1:14] There were at least three missiles that
[1:16] did not go into the headquarters area
[1:18] and did cause some collateral damage. We
[1:21] regret that, but that uh that is one of
[1:23] the risks of using military force. 20
[1:26] missiles landed inside the intelligence
[1:28] compound, although not all hit the
[1:30] headquarters building they were aimed
[1:31] at. Sti
